Emergency Preparedness The world has encountered multiple disasters throughout the past decade. The devastation from tsunamis, mudslides, hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, wildfires, super storms, and terroristic attacks impacts the lives of millions, and the affects will be felt for generations. A "disaster is an event that causes a level of destruction, death, or injury that affects the abilities of the community to respond to the incident using available resources" (Nies & McEwen, 2011, p. 562). The state of Texas has experienced severe drought conditions for several years. Severe drought conditions place Texas at high risk for wildfires and flooding. The Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) assisted individuals to obtain medications, and the Department of Public Safety facilitated identification needs. As the need for shelters dwindled, CHN were able to assist in relocating citizens until permanent arrangements became available (B. Clampffer, personal communication, March 24, 2014). Multiple fire departments provided assistance to contain the BCCF. Clampffer estimated that 800 fire fighters, per shift, assisted in containing the wildfire (B. Clampffer, personal communication, March 24, 2014). With citizens out of harm's way, triage shifted from the public to first responders. "The Atascocita Fire Department made State of Texas history when AVFD responded with MPV 6-2 to the first AMBUS (Ambulance-Bus) deployment in Texas history" (Melendez, 2011, n.p.). The MPV 6-2 AMBUS is a mobile medical unit equipped to provide twenty six patients with advanced level care. AMBUS medical staff triaged and provided care to of firefighters, "law enforcement, and utility staff with rehab, hydration, and emergency medical aid" (Melendez, 2011, n.p.). September 6, as county resources quickly exhausted, Judge McDonald requested that Governor Rick Perry ask the Federal Emergency Management Agency for individual assistance.
