This helped in eliminating bias through reduced sampling error. The sample of 20 practitioners as well as 20 consultants appears to be too small and unrepresentative. There are too many consultants and practitioners in the field today to be represented by a group of only 20 individuals. Again, the sample represented the population in the New England Metropolitan area. This created bias in the representation as it only represents a single area. On the other hand, the sample waa a nice blend of representatives from different groups including men and women, white, Latino, Asians, and blacks. Though not in equal numbers, the good representation helped eliminate bias a both the possible oppressors as well a those oppressed were represented hence each group could contribute its views. The study also considered experts in the interviews.. this a great advantage to the study as experts have a good understanding in combined or specific knowledge. They understand the process, strategies as well as group behaviors. The interviewer recorded the interviews on tape. This was an advantage to the study as it gave an accurate summary of the interview. Comments and information gathered were stored for reference. Through repeated listening, it must have been easy for the interviewing committee to get interview clarity and analyze speech, body language, and voice
Dr. Charleyse Pratt serves as the assistant vice president of multicultural affairs and engagement of Cleveland state university. In this role her primary responsibilities include coordinating Learning Communities Programs and Partnerships at Cleveland State as well as directing initiatives for the Cleveland Transfer Connection. The transfer connection partnership is with Cuyahoga county Community College’s where students are able to begin associate or undergraduate studies to earn a degree and then transfer to Cleveland State to complete the four-year baccalaureate degree. The Cleveland Transfer Connection (CTC) at Tri-C and Cleveland State University is a Learning Communities program unique to Cleveland because it provides services from two institutions and offers two degrees (an Associate’s and a Bachelor’s) in one community of students. Dr Pratt’s driving philosophy is to create opportunities while disarming challenges for students who have a desire to gain an education but now need the preparation to be successful in a classroom. Her approach is student-centered support, leadership training and resource management to better navigate the academic journey toward graduation.
The role of a Residential Advisor at Allen Hall is crucial in shaping the lives of the students they mentor, as well as creating an uplifting, accepting atmosphere to nurture acceptance and diversity so every resident prospers. It is even more vital to cater to the needs of the students. At Allen, this means extra emphasis in inclusion and diversity education because the hall is regarded as very diverse and forward thinking. To create a positive atmosphere is needed for the students from different backgrounds. Not only this, but Allen Hall is my own residence hall, and also a hall I have found that I fit best with. When I first came, I was unsure of how I would feel because it hadn’t been my first choice in living options. It turned out to
Cecilia’s interests in college have been primarily geared towards understanding her ethnicity. Cecilia emigrated from Mexico and has taken advantage of the many cultural resources Wellborn has to offer. She joined a multicultural sorority and is actively involved in the university’s Office of Multicultural Affairs. Additionally, she is undeclared but is primarily taking courses in sociology and anthropology while struggling to complete the science pre-requisites for medical school. The social and cultural capital formed from her participation in these activities will help shape her identity but she did not mention how or if these resources have helped her in pursuing her career interests.
Multicultural competence is the ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures. There are four major components present when discussing multicultural competence: (1) the individual (me) must be aware of one’s own cultural views, (2) know ones attitude towards cultural differences, (3) Knowledge of different cultural practices and worldviews, and (4) having cross-cultural skills (Adapted from class 2 and 3 definitions handout, as adapted from Pope, R.L. & Reynolds, A. From the reading on page 254 in chapter 9 of Becoming a Multicultural Educator, by William A. Howe and Penelope L. Lisi, there are myths stated about the failure of bilingual students and bilingual education. In table 9.2 on page 254 it is stated that, “it is a myth that all immigrant groups were successful [with learning the English language]. There were many low-skilled entry-level jobs that did not require advanced language skills.” My question is what is the considered success for immigrants learning the English language? Would it be considered successful if an immigrant learned enough English to obtain a job and earn a living within the United States or does an immigrant need to meet a specific level of mastery in the eyes of educators

After reading the many articles on the notion of diagnosis and counseling with multicultural/ethnic patients, it has come to my attention that this focus is solely based on stereotypical attitudes. Sure, it can be said that it is important for a therapist to have a background of the patient’s heritage and culture, but doesn’t this necessarily mean that the outlook of the therapist will be put in a box by doing so? I think multicultural competency is a ridiculous way to improve patient-therapist relationships because of several reasons. First off, generalities and race-centralisms only hinder, not improve, the inner workings of a therapy session. Second, there is no real way to test
This training on cultural diversity encouraged me to examine and re-evaluate my personal belief system, the principles and opinions and attitudes I hold dear, and the significant issues of life we encounter in the workplace and in the general community. Such issues as discrimination, prejudice, stereotyping of persons, hostile work environment and sexual harassment, in addition were discussed. Issues of workplace harassment, hostile work environment, oppression and privilege, particularly with respect to gender, race, class, and sexual orientation were examined and discussed with respective consequences. This training encouraged the alignment of theory, policy and practice of cultural diversity in the workplace.
In my opinion, the purpose of multicultural council is to bring opportunities for ESL students while promoting various traditions and cultures. My first wish if I will be able to get involved in the multicultural council is to learn about different cultures from ESL students. Not surprisingly, Earl Haig is a pretty multicultural high school full of people coming from different places. By being as an executive of multicultural council, I hope I will have chances to communicate with ESL students who have unlike cultures and styles of living. Also, I hope to enhance my skills, such as teamwork and leadership skills. I believe by participating as an executive in the multicultural council, I will have a chance to gain leadership experiences
On page 238 in chapter 8 of Becoming a Multicultural Educator, by William A. Howe and Penelope L. Lisi, it states that, "culturally relevant education (CRE) was coined by Gloria Ladson-Billings (2009) to describe "a pedagogy that empowers students intellectually, socially, emotionally, and politically by using cultural referents to impart knowledge, skills, and attitudes"". The five principles that are discussed on page 239 are used to guide teachers in the direction of having a culturally relevant classroom for their students to learn about how to participate in a democratic society. As for me, the definition of multicultural thinking is the understanding that people have different ways of thinking, as well as having a different belief system resulting to different ideologies and values. It also means as a counselor, I must be non-judgmental and aware of those others of diverse cultural and thinking, while my job is to help them firstly by being a listener and secondly by helping them cope with their issues. In retrospect to the awareness that clients are un-uniformed in their thinking will enable me to reform my rationale into an open-minded counselor.
Although the practice of counseling has evolved considerably since its inception, the concept of multicultural competence remains novel. Engrossed in the lives of every clinician are underlined biases and prejudices that act as filters in which every interaction with a clients is affected. Current research on the topic of multicultural counseling has shown that although multicultural awareness is on the rise there is still a remarkable gap in research regarding the use of counseling service and outcomes for racial and ethnic minorities (Kerney,Draper, & Baron, 2005). Insights such as these have encouraged researchers to investigate multicultural
