Being able to tell a story and keep the audience interested is a part of music culture. An artist writes a song and then decides what songs from the album will have a music video to represent the meaning of the song. In the music industry, there are many messages that are sent to the intended audience through visuals and lyrics. Music videos are a way for the artist to represent their lyrics in a visual form. A successful music video can vary, but majority of music videos tell a story. This paper will focus on the 2016 music video “Formation” by Beyoncé. Looking at the song and music video from a narrative perspective will be the focus of this paper. This paper will analyze the narrative form, function, form and linkage of the narrative. Beyoncé’s Lemonade is her sixth album, which is also the top selling album in 2016. This album has earned 2.5 million in global sales, making Beyoncé is one of the highest paid female artists. The album was only available through streaming on the exclusive music website Tidal.com. Formation is the first song and music video that was released on the Lemonade album. “Narrative embraces structure and meaning. Whereas structure refers to the form in which the author chooses to create, that is poetry, prose, or drawings; meaning has to do with the author’s interpretation of what has happened” (Pellico and Peggy, p.59).
The first step of the narrative analysis is the narrative form. In the narrative form, it consists of three parts: the
For this paper I decided to analyze the content of lyrics and music videos by hip hop artists. The reason why I decided to use these media outlets is because they contain the powerful images and words preformed in music videos and songs. Music videos help create the visual portrayal of hip hop artist that is used to promote the songs they release. Lyrics within songs are ways artists communicate, for example,
Art encompasses many different forms, from paintings, writing, drawing, dance, and even music. It is a way of expression for the artist in its various forms. Music, in particular, allows the artist and listener to engage in the work and better understand what the musician wanted to tell. Music provides listeners with an escape from their world and into a world filled with tunes and emotion. There are many different genres and types of music and each can tell a story. Looking at these artists’ music videos, they also represent feelings of the artists. Things in the videos are used specifically to create an affective feeling and response. Music is able to represent different events and discus contested issues in a forum that the artist
There are many artists that may contribute to the history that has lead to the development of the present day. Each different artist shows their gratitude and appreciation for the history that has lived on for many years by the style of music. For example, Beyonce’s album Lemonade illustrates the different struggles that black women had to face throughout their lifetime. However, when Beyonce’s husband Jay Z cheated on her, the album got much more personal than anybody else would think. Although, there are many different reasons for the creation of her album and what she is trying to say, many people still disagree with Beyonce’s album and argues that she is using the black feminist empowerment to make money of her album.
From the tragedy of “Julius Caesar” to the coming of age of “To Kill a Mockingbird.” these stories have a profound effect on us as humans. In music much the same is also true. Singular songs, such as The Kingston Trios’ song “M.T.A.” tell light hearted tales of a man trapped on the subway. In other ways, whole conceptual albums can be created to tell complex stories, such as Green Day’s 2004 hit album “American Idiot” which touched on topics like love, religion, American society, and war. These stories can be deep and personal as well as funny and light hearted. Everything like introspection and depression, in 1994’s “The Downward Spiral.” to politics and corruption like 2007’s “Year Zero.” show off how dynamic music’s ability to tell stories really
This essay will argue that Nicki Minaj’s hit song, ‘Anaconda’, is a prime example emphasising the objectification of woman specifically within the music industry. What makes ‘Anaconda’ significant in comparison to all the other music artist’s where men objectify multiple woman in their music videos (Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’), Nicki Minaj objectifies herself. With tools such as the Effects model and the Uses and Gratifications model as an aid to the justification and support for the cause and effect of my reaction of both the audio and visual messages being sent from the infamous ‘song’, to its audience, such as myself. Cases where people (bloggers) have criticized this particular work aids to the justification of my opinion made.
Narratives have a conventional superstructure that is inherently familiar across culture and ethnicity. The sequence of events in narrative production is generally arranged linearly and in chronological order. Seminal research of Stein and Glenn (1979) divide the narrative superstructure, also called story grammar, into five constituent components: (1) the setting, which introduces story characters as well as the time and place of the story action; (2) the initiating event, which describes the action that sets up the problem of the story; (3) the internal response, which details the speakers reactions to the event; (4) the overt attempt, where the speaker discusses the actions needed to solve the problem; (5) and the consequence, which details
Throughout this seminar we have explored the cultural work of music in society as seen through the very capable eyes of women. These commentaries assume a certain knowledge base by these scholars in an attempt to explain what the music means and how specific music generated and achieve their signifying effect. The knower has the responsibility of providing the knowledge and it through their experiences that the knower provides us with a deeper understanding of their music and the relevance of the signifying effect. One such embodiment of this narrative is Lauryn Hill and the groundbreaking work from the “Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” In this Grammy winning album, we get a glimpse of the artist’s power and control as Hill through her personal
The next experiment is emotion discrimination and differentiation task adapted from Borod et al. It is more comprehensive than the first experiment, as it reflects both children’s visual discrimination of facial expressions and conceptual understanding of the emotions ability. The hypothesis of this experiment was both abuse and neglect groups were less able to distinguish negative emotional displays than control group. Although the abuse group might be able to separate anger with other negative emotional displays. The participants consist of 15 neglected, 13 abused, and 11 nonmaltruated children from 3 years 5 months to 5 years 8 months. The recruitment method is precisely the same as the first experiment. The objects were 42 black and white
“Formation” opens with the voice of Messy Mya and images of New Orleans, Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina, while Beyoncé sits atop a police car in a flooded neighborhood. The video is filled with images of
In 2013, Robin Thicke, a relatively unknown but well-seasoned R&B singer, found major success in his upbeat song “Blurred Lines,” which featured the big-named artists Pharrell Williams and T.I. (McKinley). The hit song broke records by spending 16 weeks on top of Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Song chart, its popularity earning it the title of Billboard’s Song of the Summer (Ramirez). The uncensored video on Vevo features three female models wearing nothing but shoes and nude-colored underwear dancing and strutting around Thicke, Williams, and T.I., who are fully dressed and frequently seen looking at the women’s bodies. Although “Blurred Lines” garnered extreme popularity, it didn’t go unnoticed that the lyrics and video, especially when paired together, tended to be off-putting for women, even though there was supposedly no intention of sexist allusions. When viewed through the lens of Stuart Hall’s “Encoding/decoding” model, the stark contrast between the creators’ intended meaning of the “Blurred Lines” video and the way in which the audience perceived it illustrates???
Stories provide insight into one’s life, however, music is a colossal part of human being’s daily life. It can bring up our character, tell us a story, or even boost physical and mental health. Implementing stories into a song can touch humans of all different cultures and benefit society as a whole. For example, listening to a rap song can allow to experience someone’s story through sound and can be influenced to reach out and change the world. Billy Joel stated that “Music in itself is healing, It's an explosive expression of humanity, it's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music.”. Writing down stories may be preferred by some people. However, telling stories in song is a way to experience
Nothing is more enjoyable than listening to your favorite song. All over the world, people listen to music on a daily basis. Music plays a major part in a tremendous number of people’s lives. While they are enjoying the music, they do not think about how the song came about. Music is not just the sound you hear or the voices in the background. People do not think about what is behind the scenes of where music comes from. Before the song is completed, someone has to make it happen. In music, there are different careers which are the song writer, the manager, the marketing executive, and the produced. Each of these careers play a huge role in how music is brought to the public.
“I think the most beautiful art is usually misunderstood,” Beyoncé stated in an interview with Elle magazine after her controversial performance at the Super Bowl this past February. Beyoncé released her sixth individual album, Lemonade, on April 23, 2016, which has songs showing her support for the Black Lives Matter movement and in favor of criminal justice and policing reform through lyrics and visual symbolism in her music videos and performances. Beyoncé delivers a Grammy-nominated album with songs such as “Formation” and “Freedom” that point out the slanted relationships between black men and women and police officers through the War on Drugs, racial profiling, mass incarceration, and policing policies. With her Super Bowl, VMA, and BET award show performances, Beyoncé and her backup dancers dresses, choreography, and other visual elements that give nods towards the Black Power Movement. The links between music and political change make a statement that the time is now for people to speak out against racial injustice and to get “in formation.”
When Beyoncé wrote Formation, she had a clear message as well as a motive in mind, given the message behind the song, Beyoncé wanted the world to know that she was blatantly unapologetic and prepared for what anyone had to bring at her. Shortly after releasing her new song, it soon after became extremely popular and is now considered an anthem everywhere. Formation is a representation of self-acceptance and can be described as the celebration of Black Pride. Lyric by lyric, Beyoncé touched on many different topics but in the process, makes it clear that she is proud to be who she is and could care less what anyone has to say about her. By using lyrics such as “I like my Negro nose with Jackson 5 nostrils” or “I like my baby hair with baby hair
A Typology for Analyzing Pop Song Lyrics Using Narrative Theory and Semiotics.” In this academic article Randle and Evans concluded that an open undefined narrative can be seen when, “no cues exist as to the time or sequencing of events or a specific setting.”(Randle and Evans 137) However, what these songs lack in events and settings, these songs seem to be brimming with hermeneutic code where questions arise at every line: What happened in the past? Why does she keep asking for forgiveness? Why doesn’t she just move on? Questions arising from the lyrics like these, are why Adele’s songs are labeled as an opened undefined narrative. A narrative where the audience has to make assumptions about what has happened in the past to cause these complicated relations to result. Although we may eventually learn what Adele’s songs may be about, we may also learn how her relationships work.
