Emotional Intelligence
“Any person capable of angering you becomes your master.” (Epictetus). Epictetus was quite right as throughout history and everyday life, emotional intelligence (EQ) has been used for exploitation or in good heart. Which is because emotional intelligence is the ability to manage emotions of yourself or others and it is that principle that “Emotions can get in the way or get you on the way.” (Mazhura). Therefore I believe being emotionally aware can make you a better citizen and having the skill to empathize.
Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the ability to manage emotions of yourself or others. It is very useful in any situations and having a lot of it is very good but there is a dark side. That is because EQ is like a double-edged sword. For instance, a person is crying and someone comes over and helps. The person that came is able to recognize and determine what to do. Which is when a person understands and knows how to share the feelings of another when exposed to a certain situation. For instance, in the novel, To Kill A Mockingbird, Atticus Finch is known for being a kind and even-handed man. As a result, Finch chooses to defend Tom Robinson, black man accused of rape, during a court session. He chose to defend him even though it would cause his family grief because if he didn’t he “couldn’t hold my [Atticus’s] head up in town.” (TKM 75). For this reason, and more, Atticus is regarded as the most empathetic person in the novel and serves as a great example for empathy. Likewise, I try to empathize as much as I can like Finch.
