Employee Pay During The Great Depression

Contrary to popular belief, the Great Depression went beyond the shore of the United States and had a major impact on multiple countries. All countries involved in trade with the United States were greatly affected- one of these being Germany. When our stock market crashed, the production of various products were put to an abrupt hault. Without the necessary money and supplies to manufacture products, there was no way to do so. Then, this resulted in the loss of jobs by many factory workers bringing the unemployment rate in the US to a mind-boggling 24.75% in 1933.

“At one point in the Depression, the cupboard was literally bearing of money.” What effect did the Great Depression have on the people who lived through it? The jobs they had, how they had to use their money, and the help they had to get.

Unemployment was one of the biggest impacts on the depression. Millions of people lost jobs. Forty percent of factory workers, and sixty-seven percent of construction workers were unemployed in Ohio alone (Stock Market Crash of 1929). In the country, unemployment went up twenty-five percent, wages went down forty-two percent, economic growth went down fifty percent, and world trade went down sixty-five percent. In the cities, factories and businesses got rid of a large number of employees or closed down altogether. Cities were not the only ones who felt the impact of the depression. Farmers faced low prices for their products, and many people still could not afford the farmer’s products, resulting in farm foreclosures across the United States.

The Great Depression created a devastating shortage of jobs in the United States. According to Document A, there were nearly 11 million people without any jobs at all and those who did have jobs suffered a decrease in pay. Not only was pay down but because of the lack of jobs, production was down as well with steel production being at 15 percent capacity and the New York Times business-activity index “showed a new low of 55, meaning 55 percent normal.” The people of the U.S. migrated everywhere to look for work just how the Mexican immigrants had done just before the Depression

The Great Depression had the following effects on the people who lived through it. The first reason is that kids had to work to provide for their families, the second reason is that people lost their homes and the last reason is that people had to work side jobs to get extra money. The first reason is that kids had to work to provide for their families. In the document the New Deal it says that single men and kids ‘’17 to 23 were sent to the nation’s forests to work’’.

During the depression the pay income was not successful; not enough money to supply the family. For example painting a whole house back then would only pay you five dollars, now it would cost thousands of dollars. Also,Farmers weren’t able to farm crops which would slow them done for selling goods for money or needs. President Roosevelt had many men working in ditches and getting paid thirty dollars a month. Many of the men were sent home because the government couldn’t pay that many people with no banks working.

The Great Depression affected everyone and everything in America. It affected families, friends, businesses, jobs, cities, states, the entire country! But everyone, no matter whether they were a man, a woman, or an african american, was affected in different ways, some ways worst than others. Everyone who lived through the Great Depression had a different experience for themselves. The women had a tougher time surviving than the men. The white men got jobs faster than the african americans. The african americans were the first fired and the last hired.

The Great Depression brings unemployment to not only women, but also men. The working people’s wages during the Great Depression had decreased because employers could barely afford to pay their employees now. The working class were working for pennies and the job conditions were horrible. President Roosevelt showed sympathy for the working class during the Great Depression, which lead the working class to write letters to the New Dealers.

    The Great Depression significantly affected Americans lives, and even everyday activities. The unemployment rate reached an all time high for this time period. Instead of waking up to go to work, Americans were forced to search for jobs all day long because workplaces could not afford to to keep people employed.

The Great Depression transformed American society and the way people thought about themselves and their relationship to the country. During this horrendous time period, many people lost many important pieces in their lives like money and jobs. Millions of families lost their savings as many banks collapsed in the early 1930s. They were unable to make rent payments or mortgage and many were removed from their apartments. The Great Depression challenged American families in vital ways, placing great economic demands upon families and their members.

The unemployment rate during the Great Depression in 1933 was 25%. Over 12 million people were unemployed with 12,000 people losing their jobs every single day. This is one hardship that brought out the worst in people.

Many people were poor in the great depression. Your parents would have lost their jobs and money because many businesses went out due to the stock market crash. You would have lost all your money because due to the stock market crash, various banks went out of funds then closed. The Americans lost so much money.They lost 30 million dollars when the stock market fell.

During the 1930's America was going through a severe economic depression and people were fighting unemployment, starvation, and poverty. In hopes to combat this depression, Roosevelt developed a plan called the "New Deal" which helped form an unemployment relief program.  In order to pay for this program, they had to start taxing workers payrolls and decreasing worker's pay to minimum wage. This upset many hard-working Americans who believed that this was an unfair program and felt as though they were being punished. Many working Americans wanted the government to end this program and send the "relief" people back to work so they could make an honest living. Others wanted there pay to be raised and their hours

The Great Depression was a very influential era in American history, affecting many future generations. One of the most prevalent impacts it had on society was the extreme poverty that swept across the nation, affecting both people in cities and in the country. The main cause for this poverty was the mass loss of jobs among the middle class. Millions lost their jobs and consequently their homes. Families lived out of tents and cars in shanty towns or Hoovervilles. In these camps, many people didn’t have their basic human needs met, children and adults alike starved. They lived in clothes that were caked in dirt and tattered, too small for growing children and too cold for the frail elderly. Government relief programs attempted to help but offered little support to the now impoverished families of the millions that lost everything.

The great depression was one of the worst economy issues we have ever had in history. It was a hard time for everyone. The great depression started in 1929 till 1939. Tons of banks closed down and about 9 million savings accounts were lost. Tons of companies and factories went under. About 15 million people were unemployed.
