Operators involved: Alex Decker- ENC’s Metallurgist, graduated from Penn State The crew is comprised of a three-man team (optimally) to complete everything in the Heat Treatment area. There is a crane operator, a furnace operator, and a straightening operator. These operators work together to receive the crankshaft from the Loewy forge. Brandon Stanley- Work in heat treatment. He has the training to run the crane, straightener, and furnaces. He has worked for ENC for seven years. Justin Sweitzer- Welder, but was helping heat treatment out for the day. Heat treatment was short an operator and needed help. Justin helps other areas when welding work is slow. John Bogacki- Core operator, has worked at this location for 38 years (1980). Worked for the old forge, and has been in the heat treatment area for a while. John taught himself how to run the mill so he could run the core procedure. Type of operation: Area of the facility that oversees the heat treatment, quenching, straightening, and coring processes. The importance of this area to relax the microstructure of the forged crankshaft, and create the grain boundaries for the strength …show more content…

Bolt-on counterweights and EVO crankshafts go straight to heat treatment. Bolt-on crankshafts receive their heat treatment process, and EVOs go through a normalization process. After some rough machining and layout, EVOs get counterweights welded on, and then go through the heat treatment process. Heat treatment is a very important area in the manufacturing process. Without properly heat treating, the customer specifications on strength and durability might not be met. The heat treatment could affect downstream processes. After the crankshaft will bend if a proper normalization process was not conducted. The straightness of the crankshaft is also very important. If the crankshaft is bent too much, there might not be enough stock for the machining
