The Influence of the ENGL 1301 Learning Outcomes on My Writings
Before now, I use to write essays without taking into consideration the elements and rudiments that make an essay holistic and complete. I have always picked up a pen and paper and write without considering who will read my write-up and the structural development of my essay. Essay for me has always been nothing but pouring out my ideas on paper and ink. Until now, vagueness and ambiguity have been the major characteristic in my academic writings because I never thought the need for fluidity and coherency of my sentences. As such, I discovered that in some of my past write-ups, ideas are presented in choppy, ambiguous and frivolous manner which is one of the major reasons for my

For an idea to be credible in an academic writing, it must have a proper support and attribution which is academically credible. In a research paper or argumentative essay, especially, evidence which consists of facts, statistics, personal stories and statement from authorities in a particular discipline gives an appropriate support to an idea. I was corrected by my Professor on my argumentative essay by writing a rough draft. I learnt that the use of first person and second person pronouns is wrong especially for research and argumentative essay. I realized that while my idea or personal submission mattered in the essay, the only way for the essay to be credible is my presenting it in the third person pronoun and also gaining support from appropriate materials and attribution. I also learnt the need and importance of citing my work from where a drew my supports and attributions. I neglected these in my first and second essays which became a detrimental factor in my grade in ENGL 1301. Proper citation and awarding of credits to borrowed ideas is very important in writing, I will never overlook these in my future …show more content…
The writing process, not only taught us the three writing processes, but also writing in a style appropriate to audience and purpose. Having the audience and purpose of writing or reading is the first strategy to writing or reading. The more you know who your audience are, their background, cultural or belief system, the more you will have an idea on how to make your writing appealing to them and accomplish your purpose. Like I pointed out in the first paragraph, until now, I never considered who my audience for my writing will be and this I believe has defeated my purpose over time. Knowing my audience before each writing has gone a long way to influence my tone, diction and structure of my writings……(explain). Discovering the importance of the audience has been very insightful to the purpose of my writing through the learning
This chapter of the textbook by E. Shelley Reid’s Ten Ways To Think About Writing: Metaphoric Musings for College Writing addresses writing students. Reid uses expository and descriptive types of writing in her text. She describes and explains about the ten different important things when it comes to writing. One example in her chapter is where she explains how to write by the rules, describes the steps on how to be a successful writer and why some people struggle with writing essays or paragraphs sometimes. The writer quoted, “Write about what you know about so that you can show not just tell in order to adapt to your audience’s needs and accomplish your goals. Unless you do a good job showing what you mean, your audience will not understand your message.” (4) She also stated in one of her steps that sometimes the audience or readers of an essay or writing cannot exactly understand what the writer is trying to tell them. She tells her audience to
Advancing in my critical thinking skills is as important as my writing skills. I have to take the appropriate steps in continuing to engage the readers throughout the writing process. Writing is crucial as a student and everyday life because it is a form of communication. I will utilize the necessary resources to assist me in applying the lessons being instructed for completion of each assignment in accordance with the University guidelines. Allowing myself to create an outline for the topic before the rough draft is setting

In Lamott’s “Shitty First Drafts”, the author speaks to a broad range of individuals. Lamott’s intended audience is struggling writers because she tries to explain the pressure everyone feels when they are tasked with a writing assignment. In Baker’s passage, the author is speaking to all teachers when it comes to science or writing. He is trying to have other teachers comprehend the importance or writing in science and also gives steps to help make better writers in the process. His audience is leaning more towards science teachers but all teachers that require writing in their environment can learn something from Baker. Meanwhile, Johnson targeted audience is department chairs for psychology and students looking to improve their writing within this discipline. She is trying to explain to psychology majors and professors the importance of finding a writing technique that statistically works for that degree. Lastly, Makenzie’s audience is intended for teachers to understand why writing is important in biology.
33. Johnson’s Great Society, for all practical purposes, was put to end in 1968 because of what? His decision to not run for presidency and not accept DNC nomination
What I have learned in my HIST 1301 I take everywhere with me. My prior knowledge and what I have learned in this course has definitely made me look at things in a new perspective. Having little prior knowledge of History is because I was never really interested in learning anything about the past, but after taking this course it has really expanded my interest in it, because if it weren't for the past and the history about it, how would we know why things or how things have ended up the way they have? How would we know the history behind transportation, how and why America basically doubled through the Louisiana purchase and why things happened the way they did? Taking this course has really made me interested in all things history, I now
I learned many lessons in my English 1301 class, but there are three specific ones I liked the most, writing a research paper, using transition words in an essay, and to attend to class. Most of these lessons are a daily basis and I used them or do them in different subjects without noticing it. The daily work in this class helped me improve these three lessons. It also helped me overtake some of the works I had in other subjects.
Module 1 establishes the framework of networking standards and protocols for the rest of the class. The module introduces data communications and defines their components and the types of data exchanged. You will learn how different types of data are represented and how data is flowed through the network.
The bible is used in kings letter because it is Holy and holds the truth which gives King a chance to correct it with his life and make people believe in his words and actually see what he is saying. The bible is included in kings writing with the structure of allusion. Kings uses allusion and combines the Bible with his letter. The bible is Holy and holds only the truth, which makes people believe in it. He knows you can’t doubt a Bible about the true facts in it so he uses it so people can her him out and believe.
Cynthia, I agree with what you say about knowing who your audience is important. I think when you're writng a paper and you know your audience it will helpp you write your essay alot faster. Knowing your audeince in writing helps because you can understand what type of style you should be using, because if you are writing in a childrens magazaine you are not going to use large words that they wouldnt understand. And if you are writing in a newspaper for adults you are going to try and impress your readers with large and vivid vocabulary to keep them interested in what you're trying to explain.
In my English 1010 class, I have learned to do a number of things through writing essays. I have written a Literacy Narrative, a Discourse Community Analysis, and a Writing Research essay. Firstly, I have learned to identify how an author’s purpose, audience, genre, and context determine effective writing. The purpose of the literacy narrative was to help me understand myself better as a writer (Jones 1). My teacher was the intended audience of the narrative. The genre of the narrative was non-fiction by cause of it being about my experience as a writer. The context of writing made my writing more interesting and more effective. Knowing those elements helps you to compose writing that is more effective due to you needing to know what you need to write about and who is receiving your writing. I displayed these skills by going into detail about my experiences with reading and writing through my life. As shown in the following sentence from my literacy narrative I shared how fun and exciting it was when my second-grade class received the opportunity to write a book, A Book of Future Astronauts, “Everyone in the class was truly excited to be writing our own book,” (Writing is Good).
My academic writing has greatly improved. I now make an active effort to use a thesaurus to vary my language. I also incorporate more transitional phrases to create a better flow in my essays. I organize my paragraphs to make sure the information and supporting evidences flows well. Even though I understood my claims and thesis needed to be supported by credible sources I analyze who and where the source was published. Specifically, the class discussion in the response to videos we watched two videos about high fructose corn syrup. I stated,” The first video, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) – ‘Party’ TV original commercial, is an advertisement made by The Corn Refiners Association”. I acknowledged that the first video was made by an association that could have biased opinions about high fructose corn syrup. By acknowledging where the source came from I demonstrate that if this video was used for evidence for safe fructose consumption it would not be a credible source because of its ties to the corn association.

My experience into English 111 not only left me anxious, it became a self-revelation. My learning capabilities were challenged because writing did not come natural and the possibility of becoming a prominent writer were going to take a lot of time, effort and hard work. In spite of not knowing what to expect, I entered into this new semester pumped up carrying an “I can do this” attitude and feeling confident.
