This portfolio has show my progress in many different ways. The biggest way is my rhetorical knowledge has been increased because of the sources we have had to read especially in this last unit when we had to use the UW database. The scholarly articles and journals pushed my reading and analyzing to the limit, but it really helped me for the future. Because of my ability to analyze the sources well, it has helped me increase my writing, because I have been able to really find good credible quotes to use within my work.
With my ability to read and analyze sources well, the portfolio shows my readiness for English 102 in many ways. It shows that I have that ability to take sources and find the appropriate evidence for my argument. It also shows
I completed portfolio #6 by determining and using effective approaches as well as rhetorical strategies when reading and writing. For example, I use rhetorical strategies when I had to read the e-text book. When I read, the class contract I had to determine what I had to do to pass the class. Lastly I had to use effective approaches when writing notes and when I used them to complete an essay.
Of the various assignments completed in this portfolio, four of them were the most meaningful to me. The “First
As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.
In the past two months i fell like i have accomplished a great deal. As i focus on it more i realize i have become a better reader. I did this by concentrating on my readings and take my time to read them. With the help of my professor and classmates i began to analyze what i read.
In English 111 I have struggled with many assignments over the course of the semester, picking myself up over time from countless mistakes on papers, to procrastinating on basic class work assignments. Before Fall semester, I had no idea what college would be like, or how hard it could be. Things were not the same as high school; it was different to a point where college seemed a lot harder than it was supposed to be. In English 111, I got the chance to meet new students and different professors that have helped guide me to success throughout the semester.
The main theme of the analysis essay that I wrote surrounding the Brave New World focused on the idea that when a society relies too much on stability, the society could derail it's people’s individuality and freedom. I really enjoyed the book Brave New World and found writing the analytical essay very interesting and challenging. I felt it was important to include this essay in my portfolio because I thought, even after several revisions, it could still use another round of editing which would have made it a better and more complete piece. Ultimately, after all of the edits, I am pleased with the final version and I wanted to display this piece in my portfolio. This essay is much different from the others in my portfolio considering it is not a creative writing piece, but rather an analytical essay.
By working on this portfolio I have learned new resources that are useful to me now and in the future. For example, many reliable websites for scholarships, job offerings, and
I learned many new things from English 1102 class. It was not much fun but I learned some interesting things. For my research, I needed a topic that interests me. I first started to search topics from the chemistry field. I could not find any interesting topics then I came across an article that talks about how robots will take our jobs and every one would be jobless. After reading that article, I was really convinced that robots were bad for human society and people should be focusing on improving other fields such as medicine than wasting time and money in inventing a robot, which is one type of luxury and that, will take our jobs. So I chose this topic for my research. For further discussions, I started searching for some more article about robots not good for human society and I found that there was not much about the negative impact of robots in human society other than taking human jobs. So I was stuck but then I found an article that supports the robots. It was a good article and it explains how robots are useful in human society. The Article says that robots will create new jobs and benefit employers, government and disable people. I also found in one article saying that if robots will do our jobs humans can focus on bigger problems like finding cures for diseases, finding solution to prevent natural disasters and many more. Therefore, I decided to support the robot’s positive impact rather than supporting
Portfolios have been used to showcase the work of artists, fashion designers, models, photographers and architects, spanning several decades (M.Williams., K.Jordan., 2007) These career portfolios have been adopted in to the nursing profession where they serve as an augmentation but not a replacement of their curriculum vitae (Lettus, 2001). They have not only transcended beyond the traditional listing of basic information such as relevant past work experiences and positions held, educational institutions attended and achievements but provide additional information that resumes would have presented (M.J. Jone., 2007). A professional portfolio is a thoughtfully prepared and organised compilation of different types of professional information and evidence that illustrate an individual’s record of continuing professional development activities, skills, experiences, knowledge, competencies, professional achievements and goals as well as their level of expertise that one has attained as a result of their experiences.’ (Andre & Heartfield, 2011)The basic components of a professional portfolio include personal details, resume and documents such as certificates graduate transcripts, licensure, (Davis, 2015) professional organisation memberships, professional awards, annual performance appraisals, dates of promotions, recommendations from current or previous supervisors or employers, peers and others (Timmins & Duffy, 2011).
Although the intent of the portfolio is to focus on my strengths as a professional in the field; I think it also allows the opportunity to showcase other things about myself such as my passion for students, other areas of interest, my personality, things I have been involved in, etc. The ability to tie in a philosophy statement that showcases my beliefs and values and
From the reading of chapter 3 there were many different topics that were discussed. The main topics were socialization, norms, and roles. But the topics that I found most interesting to me were language acquisition, societal differences in roles and culture, and culture shock.
Probably the most useful pieces of information that I garnered from these four portfolios has to be section two, where we planned out goals for the next four years. All the things I listed on there were things I had previously considered doing, but I never looked into the requirements of what I needed to accomplish those goals. Clearly knowing now at the start of university for me will allow me to proceed forward more knowledgeable in the goals that I wanted, and know more clearly now the smaller stepping stones that will take me to where I want to be. In addition to this, I learned a variety of things from these portfolio projects ranging from peers’ experiences in college, my strengths as a person, and pinpointing exactly what I seek in a
Throughout this semester in English 101, I have made a significant improvement on multiple things, including how to be an exceptional writer and thinker. English has always been one of my most favored subjects to study because to me it instructs students how to be intelligent, how to become a more creative and critical thinker, and be able to develop ethical values and imagination. You can express yourself more efficiently in English than you can in any other subject. This class has truly made me a more confident writer and helped me express myself in different ways through the different types of papers I wrote. By writing different types of papers I have improved multiple areas of my writing. I have grown as a student in diverse areas such
As the semester comes to a close, it is always interesting to look back and reflect on the events and opportunities my English class has given me throughout my first semester as a whole. At the beginning of this semester it was evident that I was feeling uncomfortable due to the adjustment that I was going through as a student moving to college. It was very difficult expressing myself through my writing since I was nervous about good impressions and my good grade. While this class was one of the most difficult courses that I have taken this far, it has become quite evident to me that I have grown a substantial amount as a writer and as a person; Especially, when it came to explaining my ideas, writing academic essays, and making arguments.
This first semester at the University of Akron has flown by. I learned many new writing concepts that helped me become a better writer. English composition was a required class that I had to take in order to get my degree. Although this class was required I still wanted to take this class to become more knowledgeable about writing. Coming into English Composition I was worried about all of the papers and the workload that I would have to complete. I knew that I was going to have to write a lot more than I previously had in highschool, but I was unsure of just how much. The works that I decided to include in my portfolio comprise of my Literacy Narrative, Image Analysis Paper, and essay titled Mayas Hardships based on Maya’s experiences in I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. I selected these works because I felt that they are the ones that require the most improvement to them. The papers i've chosen show how far I’ve came In English Composition.
