Honestly, I did not completely understand the meaning of “composition” before taking this English course, nor did I ever give the word much thought. I was a little worried when I was told I needed an English course as a pre requisite to transition to my RN. I had not written an essay since high school, which was a good 15 years ago, and truly felt my ability to compose an essay was not where it needed to be in order to make it through this English course. I feel that the encouragement from my awesome support system has helped me make it past this course that I absolutely dreaded and was fearful of not passing. Taking time to study and being able to revise my essays made me realize that I had a lot to work on in order to complete a successful …show more content…
The reader could not really follow my essay because I did not add that transition sentence when going from one thought to the next. The word choice errors seemed minor at first, but made a big difference in my essay when it was revised. Creating the website in Unit 4 was a new challenge for me. I am not very computer savvy, so it was a great learning experience that I really enjoyed. Being able to create a background to go along with my learning in this English course was pretty fun. Incorporating my essays in the pages on my website was a little difficult for me, but when I figured it out, I was thinking “why did I not do that in the beginning?” When I was working on my website, I noticed a difference from my composing process essay to my critical argument essay’s corrections. I found that my critical argument essay did not need as much revising as my composing process essay. Which makes sense when it comes to learning. It’s funny how learning works. It was nice to compare all of my essays and see how my grammar progressed to college level, rather than kindergarten level. This course has made me realize that I did not give much thought into anything I have …show more content…
I saw that some of my weaknesses in writing were, the use of incorrect grammar, disorganization of my thoughts, and punctuation placement. I still have 4 semesters left before reaching my goal. This English course has been step 1 for me to compose college level writings for my future courses, and I could not have imagined trying to get through any other courses without taking this one first. I know that I have gained composing skills and knowledge that will impact my future professional skills. My goal is to have transitioned from LVN to RN within the next year, and this course has greatly increased my skills of writing notes and the use of correct grammar when writing. As an RN I will be in a management position, therefore I needed this English course to help me be the most professional I can be in my career. I may not be 100% perfect at composing an essay yet, but there is nothing
In the past two months i fell like i have accomplished a great deal. As i focus on it more i realize i have become a better reader. I did this by concentrating on my readings and take my time to read them. With the help of my professor and classmates i began to analyze what i read.
During this semester, the realization of my past was that I have often skimmed through parts of the writing process to get the job done. Not being an avid reader often hindered my writing abilities. This class most definitely made me realize that the entire writing process is important and having peer reviews also helped significantly and certainly made a difference in the result of my work. Taking the time to read, brainstorm my thoughts, write an outline, rough draft after rough draft, reading constructive criticism of others helped in the revisions of my papers’ reaching the best possible outcome. When selecting English 102, I knew I would be challenged, but to what extent I was unsure. If like past English courses that were taken learning to write essays would be the goal. Once realizing that my work would be shared with others, providing informed information
English 111 has been a great course so far. I have been learning new material that will help me to improve my comprehensive English skills, such as speaking, reading and writing. In this course, we have covered many topics that usually are not presented or introduced to students in younger agers. Sexual harassment is one of the sensitive topics that we have discussed in details. I personally did not fully know what is the true definition of sexual harassment and what form of actions or phrases that we could say that would considered to be forms of sexual harassments or harassments in general. During lectures, we have looked cases of sexual harassments and how we can educate ourselves and be aware of this issue that our communities facing. Student were assigned to draw their thoughts and what they have
With every paper I write I learn something new. Shortly after starting my first semester of college I realized I would be writing a lot of papers. From term papers in every class, to an English paper due every few weeks. In English 101 I wrote a persuasive paper. With the coming to terms assignment I really dug into someone else’s persuasive paper and dissected it piece by piece. I recalled the rules to writing a persuasive paper and compared it with the op-ed article. I really enjoyed that I was able to do that because I felt that I learned something and I was able to apply my knowledge in a later class. Going through the writing process for this paper I learned a lot. To dissect an article and pick out the project, aims, methods, and materials
The first day I walked into Freshman Composition I had the idea that everything assigned was going to be extremely frustrating and difficult, as this is a college class. Equally important, my expectations for the class was to earn at least a B, further my writing abilities, and learn more about college. As the semester started, I noticed that my writing was not at the college level and I needed to learn how to improve it. Along with improving my writing, I was also able to learn about college life. With this essay turned in and handed back, I began to realize my writing needed practice and critiquing. Furthermore, I gave myself goals to achieve in Freshman Composition, I have learned useful tools to improve my writing, and I have learned more
As I began this journey of obtaining a college degree at the age or thirty-two, I was given advice by a professor that will stick with me forever. As I was creating an essay in English 101, Dr. Andrea St. John wrote that we must own our work. She stated, “This paper, as well as every assignment that is turned in, is a direct representation of who you are as a person.” Clicking on the link in the assignment instructions I was unsure of what I was tuning into, but this was the mindset I had when I began my assessment. Looking at three positive elements of the content, along with three elements that could be improved it will be discovered how well I feel that the speaker did on his presentation. Finally, it will be discussed positive and negative
In the short semester this course happens to be, having assistance in deciphering what it means to be a wonderful writer is the goal. Along with this, I will have a clearer understanding on how to break down the information going into an essay; more importantly, this shall help essays flow together smoothly. Overall, it is thrilling to be able to take this course. Although, majoring in English remains to be something I am uninterested in. Thoughts of stepping into the dental field have come into play, but I happen to currently be undecided on what my plans are for after graduation. Attending a community college is more than likely the best bet. Interesting enough, during the school day generally I keep to myself, but I am an outgoing person.
English 101 is much different than any English class I have ever taken. The theme of the class is to help you with your overall English skills. It is different for our class because while our class work is done online, we have the help of an in-class teacher who oversees our work and gives us tips and advice on how to do some of the work when we have questions.
From what I can remember from my high school career, the essays that were assigned in my English class were based on the narratives, poetries and passages that were read in class. We would be assigned books and passages that our teacher would give us and write about what the author was trying to explain throughout his story. We would also have to compared and contrast different poems. The different kinds of writing assignments that I had to do in my high school English class were based on narrative essays, descriptive essays and persuasive essays. I would have to convince people what I thought about a book or poem through my writing. I also had to compare and contrast passages with novels. The most recent English writing assignment that I had to do in high school was my college essay. I
In modern day america we measure growth by one word, success. During my years as an english student, I never liked grammar. Nothing made me feel successful about my papers or my journal entries. This class is designed to encourage and develop skills as a reader, writer, and a thinker. Some students view this class as a college credit. When I first joined this class that is exactly what I thought. Never would I guess that an english course would help me in the ways that it has.
Writing in college is often a huge transition for incoming freshman that do not have a very good writing background. I came from a high school where education was not taken very seriously, and the teachers did not take pride in their teaching. My grammar and punctuation skills were weak, and the whole thought of writing a four to six page essay was a very stressful thought. At the beginning of the semester I had already learned more in writing then what I had learned in my whole four years of high school. I have passed essays two and three and have started to see my writing skills progress as the semester goes on. The progress I have made throughout the semester is why I feel I should pass this course. I have learned proper grammar, developing paragraphs, and my incorporation of sources has improved to back up my writing.
Initially, it can be hard to make friends in college. It is especially hard when people around us keep changing every semester. However, this semester was slightly different for me. Uniquely enough, I came to know some interesting people as a part of my English 101 class. As a part of the course curriculum, every student was assigned a group of random classmates to work as a peer editor throughout the semester. Eventually, me, Donnie, Stephen, and Elle Anna Rose landed in the same group. Our first interaction was short, and it was too limited to share all the information about one another. However, I realize that all of us have very different dreams, beliefs, and personalities that set us apart from one another. Apart from these differences,
My writing has become increasingly more concise and I have learned how to sustain a logical argument in an organized manner. I have learned to identify different writing styles and make connections that weave things together. Moreover, I am hoping someday that the lessons I learned here in Writing 101 could help me to be successful in getting my Bachelor’s degree. At last, hopefully I can use everything I learned in this course to help me communicate more efficiently and effectively with other people. Before the class start, my objective was: I wanted to be more confident in constructing the grammar of my sentence and paragraph. At this completion of the course, I feel sure that I had the tools needed to further develop my writing skills on my own. I now have the knowledge in order to develop new ways to increment my vocabulary and to understand how to learn
In my previous English Composition course, the teacher, known as Professor Ostrenko, had a peculiar way of teaching and practicing writing. For her, no matter how extraordinary an essay was or exemplary the concept nothing could get over a ninety-nine percent because , as she would say, there is always room for improvement. Over the semester, she pushed me to shift my tone from assignment to assignment so a supposedly energetic and light assignment would not appear dark and Gothic as some of my other papers. She allowed me to see some of my weak points in writing and try to work around them so I could have a better literary career. In this English composition course, I believe it can also help do the same and train me to shift my tone effectively
The first semester of college almost always begins with English 101. Some writers discover there love for writing, and decide to move forward with it, while others take other paths in their college career. I will say that my appreciation for writing has improved greatly, although writing has never really been my strong suit. Over the course of the semester, the most common mistakes that I made, were grammar mistakes. A common recurrence that I would have in all of my essays were strong, compelling arguments that followed the prompt well, but when it came to communicating these arguments, my grammar would lack. For the past 17 weeks my main focus to improve as a writer has been things like comma splices, typos, spelling, wordiness, and a little
