Despite how many advocates of the English language believe, the language needs no protection; it will not go extinct, nor die off. The once grand imperialism of Britain, and then America, has caused English, as a whole, to grow and continue to be used all over the world, acting as the filler for language gaps between countries. This means that the language needs no bodyguard and the officialization would only further segregate citizens and noncitizens. Turkey and Canada are two countries are among a list of many others who are officially multilingual. The multilingual status was the result of efforts to make a singular official language. Like Turkey and Canada: if there is no problem to fix, there will be no benefit and no gain. But instead
If people maintain their native language, then they can represent their culture and linguistic needs in government. This way of thinking about multilingualism breeds acceptance and appreciation of other cultures and languages. Finally, I agree with and enjoyed Benjamin Rush’s commentary on multilingualism. He, “expressed his concern that, “narrow-minded people,” fearful of retention of the German language among Pennsylvania’s citizens, would not recognize the benefits a German college might provide the nation. The spread of learning among citizens, no matter what their native tongues, was crucial to the cause of the government” (23) by promoting democracy through freedom of speech and freedom of language. Additionally, multilingualism works to make stronger foreign relations, advances in science, math and all other research and allows America to communicate its success to other countries, The presence of multiple languages makes America the accepting, culturally diverse mixing pot that it is
Governments are all corrupt, and they thrive on fraudulence and deception of others. Politicians are constantly looking for ways to benefit themselves and their personal agendas rather than considering the overall well being of people. The 20th century was full of these close-minded, headstrong leaders that played a significant role in politics. Evident in the numerous governments that affect her childhood, Marjane Satrapi displays how corruption plays a large role in the terrorism of the lives of Iranians in her graphic novel, Persepolis. The American and British desire for oil, the Shah’s attraction to money and urbanization, and the theocratic beliefs of the Islamic Republic show the many different flaws of governments.
Having different languages in a country, they say, would isolate those foreign-speakers from the rest of the country. Plus, since a knowledge of English—albeit a limited knowledge—is required for American citizenship, they argue that these immigrants might as well learn English proficiently. Economically, having one official language would be cost effective. Translators for both spoken and written language can be expensive, especially for good translators since an poor translation can lead to miscommunication and all kinds of unfavorable problems. English-speaking immigrants would also promote America’s economy because they would be able to secure better jobs. Lastly, the promoters of Official English argue that life would basically be unchanged since English is already the most-spoken language in the US. It would only affect the government and its documents, but it would not lead to a decline in usage of foreign languages nor would it require people to speak English only. Yet, others still argue that Official English is
However, after a natural process ofassimilation that took one or two generations, English was the dominant language within mostthe immigrant’s families. Similar process happened in Canada in the 18th century, and progressed after the US declaration of independence, which led many loyalist supporters of England to leave for Canada. That established English even more. Since the early 17th century, ships from Europe travelled all over the world for economic and political reasons. That process, with the power ofthe British people at the time, and the growing geographical influence of British colonies, has expanded the domination of English all the corners of the world. By the 19th century, places such as The Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand,
The fact that many people want to make English as the official language they have not seen the benefits of having a wider variety of languages in the country. Although there are many benefits having many different languages in the country, what type of benefits will the country obtained by having English as the official language? Will it actually united the people more? Or will it make it fall apart? In order to find the answers to this questions it will probably be best to talk with a someone that is involved with linguistics and find a similar situation in other countries to use as
Usually, when a country does not have an official language it’s because of historical or cultural issues. After doing some research I was shocked to learn America does not have an official language, although, there are some states that have English as their official language. To be exact, there are thirty one states with an official language (The National Leading English Language Advocate). For instance, as stated in the article "States where English is the official language”, the Washington Post, Missouri has a law that states "The general assembly recognizes that English is the most common language used in Missouri and recognizes that fluency in English is necessary for full integration into our common American culture." Other states such as Tennessee, have even further guidelines that
In a bi-national state, Jews and Palestinians would exist together as independent groups in a government course of action. Every individual would run its particular undertakings self-governing and be ensured the lawful right to utilize its dialect, religion, and customs. Both would partake in government in a solitary parliament, which would be worried about matters of supra-common significance, protection, assets, the economy et cetera. Such a state could be demonstrated on the cantonal structure of Switzerland or the bi-national course of action of Belgium. In the Palestine/Israel case, the cantonal structure would be founded on the present demographic example of the nation where thickly Arab-populated ranges like the Galilee would get to
no person has the right, enlightenment, or claim to have the government or any officials communicate, perform, or provide services or materials in a language other than English
At first glance, CoreCivic strictly adheres to an ideology of acceptance and second chances, and the discourse of their Code of Conduct strongly reflects that. However, on deeper analysis, certain anomalies present themselves, and CoreCivic’s apparent ideals begin to shift. Luckily, many of these irregularities can be easily pointed out by applying Orwell’s criteria for bad writing from “Politics and the English Language”, such as misuse or overuse of idioms and vague use of language. While CoreCivic’s statements paint a remarkably friendly picture, context paints another.
According to urban legends, German was almost the official language of the United States (Sick, Bastian). In the myth, a group of Germans living in the United States got a petition for German to be the official language of the United States to Congress in 1794. By one vote, it didn’t pass. As you can see, having an official language in the USA was a topic of debate ever since the founding fathers were alive (“National American?”). Having a national language would mean all official government business is conducted in English (“Official English”). I believe that the USA shouldn’t have an official language since it goes against freedom of speech, it would be racist, and it wouldn’t help unite the country.
Across the United States the amount of people who speak english as a second language or do not speak it at all keeps growing. This means some people could have neighbors that they cannot even ask for a cup or sugar from. There are even sections of the U.S. where immigrants have their own communities and they mostly do not speak english with each other. It is crazy how in a country whose foundation is english has portions of the population where it’s not spoken at all. A foreigner goes to a foreign country and expects to meet people that know the native language. It should be the same for the United States. Although not having english as the official language make coming into the U.S. easier for immigrants, english should be the official language of the United States.
English as the official language of the United States could benefit the U.S. Government and America as a whole. America has long since been a multicultural nation and has been an English speaking nation since it was founded. The constitutional and federal documents are all in English, which furthers the American people, believing English should be our official language. The majority of states already have English as their official language, for English has always provided a much needed cohesion to our diverse citizens since it was founded.
The number of Languages spoken throughout the world is estimated to be 6,000. Although a few languages are for wider communication around the world, these are very often spoken as second, third, fourth, or later-acquired languages. Fewer than 25% of the world 's approximately 200 countries recognize two or more official languages, with a mere handful recognizing more than two. Despite there being lots of bilinguals and multilinguals, there is also a bunch of monolingual people in the world. The adult population is allowing their children not to learn a foreign language, drastically underfunding language courses in middle to high school level classes. Because they think it 's not necessary in this century, thinking they don 't require communication with other people from other countries. But the truth is that it can actually benefit in more ways than people think. The United States school system has started to not require foreign language class for graduation requirements, this places the U.S at a disadvantage in the world scene.
Who can argue against the fact that a successful government must be unified in, if nothing else, its communications? However, the debate over the official language spread deep. Remembering the previous paragraph, foreigners will be here no matter what. They are the majority in some communities. This means that there is a whole population of consumers speaking and understanding only a language other than English.
“In the world were over seven thousand languages have exisisted, one language had become dominate. This dominant language is English.” “In the majority of countries throughout the world speak English as their second or first language, no longer just America or England.” English has taken many forms, American English, the Queen’s English, Australian, Canadian English, and several others. Even American English has taken several types of English, Jersey English, East Coast English, West Coast English, Southern English, slang English, and Ebonics. All of these languages have major variants between them, but are all of them are still understood aboard. Without English the world couldn’t operate,
