I will be successful in English 151. While I’m in class, I will make sure that I listen to what my instructors are saying and how they say to do something. It is also very important to take notes on what is being taught in the class, and whatever your teacher may right on the broad. In order to receive a passing grade and really pass the class I will have to complete all of my homework. When I’m at home, I will study a smaller section at a time so I can reflect more often on what I have just read. By doing that my brain will have more time to rebuild and expand. Then I will try to keep to my appointed studying times and days. That will help me to stay on track with my homework and other assignments in the class. Having a certain study
Literacy, as I see it, has a very broad definition that solely depends on the interpreter. I believe literacy is the ability to read and evaluate the content in their own way of thinking, along with the ability to write and display understanding on a story, topic, or your own thoughts. Reading by itself is useless without being able to think past words on a page and develope one’s own conclusion to form the connections to what the author is trying to say. Writing, and how it is displayed, is a useful tool for the audience in which it is being written for. Effective, descriptive writing makes a more enjoyable read and ultimately a better piece of literature.
What obstacles do you face, if any, while studying at home? After school I use my workspace to finish projects or help my parents with reading legal documents. I have chosen some space in my bedroom and the living room as my dedicated workspace. This allows me to concentrate on my school projects and school. I have to help my parents at home and having a study in my room allows me to finish my work.
Mastering your note taking skills, doing all assignments, and most importantly coming to the lectures will lead to the student passing the class. While we may all not pass with flying colors doing these simple steps can assist in having a successful as well as enjoyable class experience. How incredible is it to learn something new? To be introduced to a way of thinking about the topic from a different perspective. While it may be a cliché thing to say, “There is more than one way to skin a cat” and this in my opinion is how any student should approach a class no matter how much they may feel they already
Young children imitate what they see adults do in society. On such thing is reading. Children will take up any form of literature and pretend that they are reading. To enhance and cater for this behaviour parents and teachers can:
This is problem since there are many distractions in my life: games, family, work, friends, boyfriend, parties, and etc. To combat this problem though I'll use the same studying method that I had developed when I was going to WSU (Weber State University). Stay focused in class, take strenuous notes on everything (Can't be too careful!), make flashcards at home and in class. Practice the flashcards with family, friends, and fellow students whenever I can. Thirdly, I have an app on my phone which is called Quizlet and with this app I can make digital flashcards that can be read back to me, I will go through the entire set of flashcards at least once a day. Most likely before I go to bed (Since I have trouble sleeping) I will also study them in the car, at work, while playing video games (during wait times, loading screens, respawn times). The great things about Quizlet is that it's on my phone and my phone is always on me, so I will essentially have my flashcards with me at all times and can practice whenever I
I’m writing an analysis of “Battle Royal” by Ralph Ellison. It is told from the first person point of view. This is a story about a young African American named Ralph Ellison, who is trying to be accepted by white society. He is offered the opportunity to read his speech he had written for his graduation at a gathering of the town’s leading white citizens (p.286). Ralph Ellison is told that he should partake in the Battle Royal before giving his speech as part of the entertainment. The Battle Royal is a fight in which several young African American boys are blindfolded, given boxing gloves, and forced to fight each other until one person is left standing in a boxing arena. There are no time
There are many techniques to help your studies. One tip for studying is to get a good amount of sleep that night, because your memory will be clearer. I would like a daily routine of doing hw after I get home before May. Here is a step by step to achieve school success. First, when you come home eat well and stay hydrated, hunger will distract you from your homework. Next, do homework for a good 1 to 2 hours, without checking your phone. The only thing you can do on your phone is to look up definitions or listen to music; classical music is good to stay concentrated. Finally, take a break and
In the book Exploring Language & Literacy chapter Preschool talks about diverse school, a diverse school is where there is different backgrounds and cultures for an example mexican, black, asian etc. In the book it says “The teachers were interested in learning how to better meet the needs of all the learners.” I think what the teachers do is admiring, to go out of there way to learn about the students cultures and backgrounds to better understand them. It so impressive, by doing this they have a better connection with the children. In their social skills they improve in indicating their needs and understanding else's emotions.
Writing not only reflects on one’s credibility in literacy, but also how America’s school system has failed students at writing in English courses. As a student, I would describe my writing as “honest, but complex”. For as long as I can remember, writing was always a tool that allowed a person to eloquently express his or her opinions, and analyze writing prompts given by teachers at school. Today, most students in English class solely attempt at getting a good grade rather than thoroughly understanding grammar and writing. Moreover, a solution for this would be allowing more English teachers at school to come together to improve the emphasis on proper language learning as well as the value of writing.
Literacy, according to Merriam Dictionary, means the ability to read and write. Everyone has the ABILITY to read and write, but that does not mean we are all good at writing. When I started elementary school in Edmond, Oklahoma, the first thing I learned was reading. My teacher would read to me and I would go to the library and pick out some books. When i got to the third grade, i was learning how to write in cursive and how to improve my pimnimship. This is also when I started to write in complete sentences and get into the “big kid” type of work. For me, I had gotten bigger and bigger assignments throughout middle school and my freshman year of highschool. My first real writing project was not until my sophomore year.
SUPPORTING THE DEVELOPMENT OF ENGLISH LITERACY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS Key Issues and Promising Practices
The idea of literacy and the ability to read and write has been a topic of interest since humans first developed language and system for communicating in a written fashion. In the last 140 years, there has been a tremendous amount of research done on the topic; many theories and ways of thinking about reading have been developed and criticized during that time (Martin, Protacio, Huang, Kuo, & Hartman, 2012).
English language learners (ELLs) are people who have to acquire a second additional language and culture. In another words, ELLs are people who do not speak English as their first language. According to the National Center for Educational Statistics (2014), the percentage of public school students in the United States who were English language learners was higher in school year 2012–13 (9.2 percent, or an estimated 4.4 million students) than in 2002–03 (8.7 percent, or an estimated 4.1 million students) As the result, ELLs are growing population in the United States of America.
English language learners are students who are unable to communicate fluently or learn effectively in English. They require specialized or modified instruction in both the English language and in their academic courses. As a future teacher I have the responsibility to provide adequate instruction that help build on students’ education, cognitive abilities and English proficiency. I will recognize and understand that ELL students come with their own language and culture. This is a benefit to their academic success.
Another key factor to succeeding as an online student is getting rid of all distraction ("Online Learning "). I learned that it is very important to put the phone, log off social media and incorporate studying during free time. It is very easy to spend hours on entertainment and wasting time that could have been spent on doing class work. I spent a lot of time procrastinating than studying. I kept telling myself that I was too busy or I will finish later, which would put me farther behind. I also had to isolate myself from everything else during study time. Being a parent or staying in a home full of others, it would be best to study during sleep time. I like to study while the house is sleeping, in the early mornings or late nights because I am able to get more work done with fewer distractions.
