Kelci Lynn Lucier has worked in higher education for ten years, and has experienced students struggle to try and find the balance between extracurricular activities, personal activities, and education priorities. Luckily, Lucier has four tips to help best use the time provided in a day. Lucier’s first step focuses on managing ones academic time and how it needs to be the top priority above all other curricular activities, stating: “It's important to remind yourself why you're in college in the first place: to graduate” (Lucier). Lucier’s second step is be able to manage personal time, she talks about how unrealistic it is to always be working, studying, or learning, she wants students to try and find time to do something fun with friends or a club. Lucier’s third step is to wkeep the students health in mind, it does no good to stay up until two in the morning studying over a history mid-term, only to be half asleep for the test anyway; sleep is important and without can only increase the stress. Lucier’s fourth and final step is to not be afraid to seek help with your time management, she states: “The most important thing to have for time
Somewhere over the years, the English major became somewhat of a joke, mocked as not a real major. Smith explains that it is not a joke but rather a “necessity”. (Smith 48) We learn of her father trying to discourage her from her dream of becoming an English major. What if that had actually happened? What if she had gone to law school instead, as he suggested. (Smith 50) We would have lost the teachings of a brilliant person. Like Smith’s father, society has also highly misunderstood the importance of the major. And, if we repeatedly put finances elsewhere, we will suffer irreparable damage.
Unlike learning Spanish or German in school, English classes are not teaching how to speak English, as much as it is perfecting the use of the language. English classes are commonly known as places to read novels, poems, essays, and novellas; it is also a setting to learn the mechanics of the English language and how to expand your vocabulary. English classes I have taken in the past have expanded my knowledge on the English language.
As a new freshman at the University of Evansville, time management stands as a recurring challenge of mine. Between taking 15 credit hour classes, which consist of three honors courses, working and studying, my time to live is pretty much gone. Since being in DISC 110 Student Success Strategies, which I found crazy at first to even be in, I have learned strategies to successfully manage my time management challenges to ensure I stay on track each semester and for the rest of my academic career.
Time management is very important to learn throughout the Freshman Composition class. There are many deadlines to meet, and with all of my classes focusing on a deadline driven career it can be very difficult to keep everything straight, and some weeks it feels like the work is too much, but even though there were many obstacles this semester, they made me all the stronger. Meeting deadlines can always be a challenge and it is very important to keep everything on track lest the assignments be derailed, I found that writing important things I needed
Time-management is one of my core academic and employability skills I possess. My time at Mercy College has been limited, my time as a declared English major has been just as limited, however, the effort I have put in to pursuing a degree in the subject has not been. I began continuing education at my local community college in 2010, and though at that time I had not outright been an English major, I am fairly certain I took nearly every English course offered. It is interesting I pursued it the way I did, though I always performed well in high school English classes, my experience at college was not the easy A English classes had always been for me .
Even after obtaining a degree, one should still expect to learn new things and to make the most out of experiences. I chose this article because it talks about a person’s experience after getting her degree. She talks about what one should not expect any major to be as easy as anyone says. She then goes into detail about her hardships of finding employment and what else she needed to do to acquire it. Then, she explains about her experience on the job and the connections she made to work her way up. Afterwards, she explains how it takes time, patience and effort in order to find success in your career.
Time management is essential in earning our education as adult learners. I know that with life we have many obstacles that can arise at any given moment. “Time management can be a common problem for any student. But throw work, children and social activities in the mix, and the web of daily responsibilities becomes even more intricately woven.” (Rasmussen College, 6 Time Management Tips for College Students, 2014) I plan on setting aside at least a couple of hours each day in order to read my assignment and make a plan as how to finish my work on time. I understand that at times I may not be able to do this, but this is my goal. As discussed in the the “Successful study strategies for non-traditional adult learners” (Columbia College) it
I don’t know what I need to be successful in English. Things I have enjoyed in previous English classes is when the teacher doesn’t assign a bunch of books that you must read. Another thing I enjoyed in previous English classes is when you can listen to music as you work on essay’s or something. Something I haven’t liked is when you have really big projects and have no class time to work on them.
It is said that “Time and Tide waits for none”. As an upcoming college freshman I need to understand the value of time to succeed in life. I have to understand that everything needs to be prioritized no matter the case. That being able to manage my time correctly will teach me discipline which is exactly what I need to get through college with the goals I have set for myself. Individuals who stick to a time plan are more likely the people who realize their goals and objectives within the shortest possible time span. This will help me get my work done before the deadline instead of working on it the night before.
Time management is how to handle objectives within the time limit given. Just like a balanced diet, if there is an over excess of one thing it will lead to complications later. Actions such as watching too much television will put off schoolwork; while, overworking can lead to problems were family and friends are regarded. There needs to be a routine that checks off everything on your to-do list, including social and free time. On one hand, certain people have less difficulty managing their time. While on the other, there are people who must go through great lengths to achieve their goals. Daily Egyptian talks to Barb Elam, a stress management coordinator, about the issues college students face with time management. She states that reasons such as time management and procrastination are leading students to seek help for greater academic success. The solution to solve this varies from person to person. However, a start is as simple as keeping a daily schedule. The schedule should include everything such as; homework, meals, tv programs, work, class, exercise, volunteer work everything you would need to get done that day. Writing this down helps the brain
Taking an English class during college is important for a fundamental education, because regardless of the major I chose, I must able to communicate well in written and spoken words. After all, in the future, when I try to obtain a job, the corporations will most likely base their decision on my ability to express ideas and opinions in a sophisticated and correct manner. Therefore, increasing my knowledge and skills in English will increase my opportunities to success. Yet, currently, many students try to avoid taking English class due to the great amount of practice and dedication that requires. This, in the long run, decreases their abilities to analyze, express and critique ideas.
The most important expectation I have of a college-level English course is developing excellent communication skills. Having excellent communication skills means I will be able to comprehend more things adequately. Everything you do in the life results in a from communication. Reading, writing, speaking and listening are forms of communication that we use everyday. These skills are very important when communicating in careers where peoples lives could be on the line, money is involved, or even when good customer service is
How I manage time is a reflection of what I value. Managing my time corresponds to how successful I will be in college and throughout life.
