High school was a major transition when it came to my literary skills. I took the most challenging english courses throughout each year of my high school career. During my sophomore year a new program was introduced, AP Capstone Academy. The introduction of this program allowed our high school to finally be recognized as a magnet school in our county. There were two classes that must be taken to continue enrollment in this program, they were AP Seminar and AP Research. Though I found it a drag to add on a writing class on top of my english class I was not looking forward to it my sophomore year, but little did I know how much it would help prepare me for academic writing in the future. During my junior year I took AP Seminar. This class involved a lot of reading and learning how to breakdown …show more content…
On our third day of class we met in the computer lab, brainstorming a topic and formulating a research question that we could write a research paper on. Daniel was searching topics online until he looked back at us and said, “We should do our project on CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) in the NFL.” I was personally not really interested in this topic, Brandon then replied “We should do our project on the drinking age and the positive and negative effects of changing the age from 21 to 18.” Both Matthew and Daniel’s eyes glowed up in interest, this made me infer that there interest in this topic stemmed from another reason. We completed the project and did well on it, it was a rigorous process to search databases for reliable sources and write in a research paper format that we were all not familiar with. The whole class thought that the difficult part in this class was over and done with until our teacher got up after collecting all our group projects, and announced “Great job guys, we are halfway through the year, now for the difficult
As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.
All throughout a person's schooling, students are required to take certain classes, whether the individual wants to take them or not. However, it is required for a reason it is seen as a helping hand went preparing them for the next step. College is no different than kindergarten through senior year there are classes that the student is required to take in order to move on and be better prepped for what is to come. English Composition 1 is one of the classes almost every college student is required to take. Now English has never been my strong suite personally, but rather science and math. I do however agree with most of the reasoning behind making it a required class. The class will not only help become more professional when it comes to
This semester is coming to an end soon. As I reflect on my work in you English 073 class, I can see very clear how much I have learned and improved as a reader as well as a write since the start of the semester. Being in your class has showed me a very valuable lesson which is how to recognize my strengths and weaknesses and learned from them. During the course of this semester, I was able to engage in several assignments and peer edited few of them. The feedbacks that you gave me helped me a lot because it made me conscious of my mistakes and what I needed to to fix them. In the reading section, my portfolio includes the following, The other Wes Moore assignments intro through chapter 4. In the writing section, the portfolio includes the following, definition, narrative, descriptive
Firstly, your class has taught me many things about English. For example, you taught us the correct way to annotate a text and how to be more clear while trying to say/ write something. Also, you have educated me how to write an article reflection. Additionally, I have learned many different facts about Shakespeare when we did the research on him. In fact, I have also been taught many new words that I would have never heard from the WODs. Also, you taught me not to use be-verbs to make sentences more interesting. Furthermore, you told me the difference of paraphrasing and explaining something. Making connections to the text or article is another lesson you have instilled me this year. I also know how to cite text and provide a concise summary of a text.
Starting the quarter off with a subject that I haven’t studied since high school seemed daunting. English was always a subject that I took a lackadaisical approach to and never took anything within any class that seriously. I thought I could do the same with this class and I was wrong. Professor Lerych created an engaging course that offers as much to learn as the effort put in. I learned throughout the class to take advantage of the opportunities presented and not to make the mistake of being lazy throughout the quarter.
Throughout the 2016-2017 school year I learned many useful writing concepts in Honors English. These items consist of poems, argumentative essays, dystopian short stories and last but not least informational essays. While completing these assignments I learned a few specific items that stood out to me which is why I am choosing to talk about them. These items are “Read a range of poetry, looking for personal connections”, “Set goals for reading stamina and fluency,” and “Engage in discussion with other readers.” I feel that these three points are three of many points that are going to stick with me in my long future. Not to mention they are very important in moving to the next level of the english language, which is why I choose to talk about these learning objectives.
As I have needed involvement in perusing and composing English has turned into my most dreaded subject. It happens to be my exclusive frail spot in my ideal scholarly record. Other than web-based social networking, I can't review understanding anything since "Shakespeare" it was appointed to me by my tenth grade English educator. Not that I read a great deal before that, I don't recall perusing any books in my previous years of school either. With regards to English my cerebrum feels like corroded apparatus canvassed in bug catching networks in an old machine attempting to fire up without precedent for hundreds of years.
The year is 2005. The room is calm and silent, but my heart is a symphony. I am glued to a chair and not by choice. A black and white puddle surrounds me. The symphony gets louder as the minutes go by. The smell of ink fills the air as I am submerged in papers. I begin to drown in a sea of words I cannot comprehend. It would be years before I would learn to swim.
BAKA! Screamed the blonde Tsundere girl as she punched the poor boy protagonist who had accidentally chosen to take a shower at the wrong time. As I watched this comedy duo on my companion’s phone, I felt strangely compelled to keep on watching and couldn’t help but feel an urge to ask what in the world I was watching. Then that question was answered with “Nisekoi” and after hearing those words from my companion I started questioning their ability to speak English or any language in a matter of fact. I started telling them they go see a speech therapist for their problems “That with the right help even a microcephalic addlepate as yourself can find a cure.” Pretty sure they never realized I was implying that they were an imbecile, it’s sad really. Regardless of this they informed me that what I was watching was not any normal animations nor was it from this country actually. They told me that I was watching and I quote “ANIMU” until they correct themselves and said “Anime”. I never had a real “Anime” though I had a idea because of how people associated this word with shows like DBZ or that one show with the monster cards. “I put my Pikachu in defence mode I put a poke card facing down and I end my turn.” This was proof that I had no real background knowledge behind this concept but putting jokes aside I really didn’t know anything about the entire world of anime. After the episode finished, I was left with many questions left after learning about this side anime so I kept
You have been selected to hear all about what I have learned about in English class this semester! I have chosen you because I know of your interest in becoming an author one day, and I think maybe this way you can get an idea of what college writing is like. This year in English 105, I explored several forms of writing. From a personal essay, to a review, a research paper, a rhetorical analysis, a group research project, and a remediation. Through writing these pieces, I have developed my skills in rhetorical knowledge, processes, critical thinking, reading, and composing, and knowledge of conventions. Included with this letter are two pieces of work from the semester that I have chosen to revise. The first is my rhetorical analysis titled Fires in California, and the second is my review of a tea shop titled One Steep at a Time.

In my previous English courses, I had no knowledge of writing an essay, or even a proper sentence. Writing did not seem like anything important in my life, or that it would affect me anyway in the future. I had despised my own writing and loathed having to write essays for any of my classes. When I had enrolled in Composition I, I had no idea what I was going to do to pass. However, in class, we had done collaborative work, which had helped me progress myself. Collaborative work had consisted of multiple students helping each other, sharing ideas, and peer-reviews. This was a change of pace for me since I had not done that before. In previous classes, I had done individual work, which was solely myself correcting and working on my work. Between collaborative work and individual work, I enjoyed working with partners and sharing each other's experiences to benefit ourselves. Over this class I have developed my writing skills, learned from my previous mistakes, and understood the writing process.
I’ve finally finished English 102 with more confidence than I came in with. Any time the word English crosses my mind I think of long essay and multiple writing prompts. Not your standard limited five page essays or writing prompts but unlimited, creative writing with rhetoric and using every appeal necessary. This year I went into English 102 with a goal to become a better writer and be able to use this class with my everyday life and classes. From week one thru three, I didn’t think this was the right class for me because I really couldn’t stay focused in class. I felt like I barely understood the lesson and all I had to do was take test online and do a learning activity for easy points. I never was a good test taker so reading the lesson was pointless to me. As the class went on I later found out that the eBook and learning activity were based on the topics we were supposed to learn. Towards the fifth week, I utilized every assignment that the professor was giving me. I realized that doing those activities helped me get better at writing non limited essay. I was extremely nervous to write my first essay which had to be a research report. I chose to do my essay on nursing and the different fields of it. I have never done a research report before so I was nervous and thought I would get a bad grade on it.
As I was searching for the classes that I would have to take for my first semester of college, I was really hoping that English was not one of them. For as long as I can remember English was the one subject that I dreaded. It would immediately put me into a bad mood. So when I found out that I would have to take W131 as a prerequisite for nursing school, I am sure you can imagine my reaction. I was bummed to say the least. It is not that I am terrible at English, I actually do not think that I am that bad. It is simply the fact that it is not as concrete as other subjects that I excel in, such as math or science. There is no right or wrong answer or a set of instructions that I can memorize as to how to write a perfect paper, and that is why I think that it has been so hard for me. So as I was putting this class into my shopping cart for enrollment, I remember hoping that my abilities would be enough and that the four months would go by really fast. Now, as the course is coming to an end and I am reflecting on how the class went for me, I can honestly say that the class was not bad at all, and I have actually improved in many ways.
Growing up, English was always a struggle for me, I didn’t like to read or write and, I always found myself, especially trying to avoid reading at all costs. Up until first grade Spanish was all I knew, so when I began school I had to learn the language everyone already knew, English. English scared me and became difficult as I feared that I was falling behind in a subject I should have already know. Soon I found out I was right, during the dreaded parent conferences where my parents were told I was below reading and writing levels. My parents tried to encourage me write and read more but I had no interest as at the time I felt that I was always gonna be behind in English no matter how hard I tried. Later when I got high school things changed, I took an advanced English class just challenge myself after that class, I continued with advanced placement courses as I knew it was time to change my mentality. After high school when I tested into English 49, I became disappointed with my results of finding out that I needed to take English 49, as I believed my writing skills were slightly more developed. Today I am glad that I got the opportunity to take English 49 as with this course this semester I have improved in structuring and organizing a five plus paragraph essay, in grammar and punctuation and, in the analysis of an author's writing.
