“The English language is nobody's special property. It is the property of the imagination: it is the property of the language itself.” This once said by famous poet, Derek Walcott. I have been in school for quite some time and exposed to various themes of education. Throughout my years as a student , English has taken the place of my favorite subject. Many people believe English shouldn’t be taught in school because it is the first language for most of us. However, I am truly captivated by its development over the course of so many years. There are just so many types of poetry , writing pieces and literature. It would be hard not to give it all a chance.
Adam Gopnik holds a Bachelor of Arts at McGill University and continued graduate work at the New York University Institute of Fine Arts. Gopnik is a writer for the New Yorker and in his article, “Why Teach English?” (2013), he warns of the steady declining enrolment in University English majors since the 1970’s. Gopnik points out that there is a growing consensus that the study of English is vanishing from American educational institutions in the similar way Latin did. He is not persuaded by the two popular beliefs in defence of why English majors exist: English majors make individuals better and English majors make societies better. Gopnik draws a conclusion that studying English is rewarding and not a waste of time, due to intrinsic pleasure
Across the United States the amount of people who speak English as a second language or do not speak it at all keeps growing. This means some people could have neighbors that they cannot even ask for a cup or sugar from. There are even sections of the U.S. where immigrants have their own communities and they mostly do not speak English with each other. It is crazy how in a country whose foundation is English has portions of the population where it’s not spoken at all. A foreigner goes to a foreign country and expects to meet people that know the native language. It should be the same for the United States. Although not having English as the official language make coming into the U.S. easier for immigrants, English should be the official language of the United States.
Gerald Graff suggests that passion for English has both innocent and corrupt components (26). Some people have always had a natural gravitation towards English. They have an inherent fondness for reading; a love that they discover during their early childhood. For other people, they experience a large indifference and apathy towards books for much of their lives. For many, books are unappealing until they find a novel to which they personally connect. The discussion and debate, the analyzation of the author’s message and motive are what beckons to these types of people. My individual appreciation of English is a combination of the two sides, innocent and corrupt. This narrative explores how my personal experiences with English have solidified
English has always been one of my favorite subjects because it allows me to use imagination and creativity while always learning something new. I constantly read and even participated in a small book club. I also began writing short stories in a journal and sharing them with others. I love being able to write whatever I may think of and turning it into something more. The passion I have for English has stuck with me for years and I have been trying to share it with others.
Misty Adoniou, associate professor in Language and Literacy, tutor’s schoolteachers on how to appropriately educate children when it comes to literacy and using distinctive languages. Adoniou’s reading “Improving kids’ literacy - a little knowledge can go a long way” is about informing teachers on how to accurately demonstrate the parts of learning and developing all the right reading and writing skills to be intellectual and socially capable, as language is used to communicate.
Thousands of children with the potential to become college educated authors themselves are currently being enrolled in school. Yet according to “The Conversation’s” Molly McManus, an educational divide forms will develop, starting as early as preschool, with English language learners falling behind their native counterpoints. According to Do Something, an organization that in part promotes literacy, 88% of high school dropouts weren’t proficient in language arts by the third grade. Students that are familiar with the English language seem to have an advantage over their
Over the past years people from all over the world have come to America bringing their own languages and cultures. The United States is thinking into passing a law that makes English as the official language. The United States should not make the English as the main language as it will affect people coming over that just want to work and look for opportunities. With this law, all the people migrating to the United States will have to pay for tutoring to understand and comprehend the English language. A reason why the United States should not focus on making the English language official is because over 20 percent of people living in the United States don't know the English language or don't know how to talk it very well.
”Too many of todays kids have straight teeth and crooked morals...”(Anonymous). Today, there is so many kids that end up in some sort of trouble, or in a terrible situation, because of their misbehavior. The kids are mainly misbehaving in their household, or in school. In my opinion, enough is enough, we must take control of this big problem.
“The United States is a nation built by immigrants. Often called the Great Melting Pot, the U.S. is renowned for its ability to soak up people from countries all around the world and still remain distinctly American”. Immigrants should not need to know english to live in this country. There are over millions of immigrants that immigrated to america every year and about 85% of them do not know english. The reason why I know this is because sometimes the immigrants don't even know that they are coming to america they usually just want to get as far away as they can from the country that they came from. This is important because it is obvious that you will not know english if you came from a different country and especially if you are immigrating illegally, then you probably did not go to school.
I think english should not be the official language in the united states. I think this because a lot of people come from different places from around the world and they can’t learn the language quick enough. Immigrants come to the united states for a better life and to better themselves. It would be a lot harder for immigrants to come to america if they don’t know the basics of english. The government says it cost more money hiring translators to translate everything. Immigrants should be able to have a chance and just because they don't know how to speak english they should have a chance to better themselves.

Ever since I was a child, I never really enjoyed the subject of English. Aside from me considering the subject to be boring my vocabulary always seemed to be lacking compared to my peers, and the time I spent on reading passages and answering questions about those passages was much longer than my classmates’. However, my literacy skills started to slowly develop, and I ended up appreciating English in my junior and senior years of high school.
In this world, all languages and dialects will be taken and woven together to produce a picture that's beauty is on a scale never before seen. It is my firm belief that to achieve this world of beauty, people in every corner of the Earth should push for the study of foreign language to be set in the mandatory curriculum for all students.
My interest in learning English is due to the fact that I have always liked to challenge myself. Even though many of my friends and family warned me from majoring in English, as it would be difficult for me, I have accepted the challenge. I have always felt that learning English would increase myself confidence and have people around me impressed. This interest has also grown through my passion in learning about languages, cultures, and traditions. Where I come from, Saudi Arabia, a big number of people came from different countries and spoke different languages. I have realized that English could be a means to interact with a lot of people speaking different languages. I have also realized that English is the lingua franca of today’s world with no close rivals. Learning English actually
Language is a key part of any family, community, culture and the human race. Without language the world today would be much different. From cavemen, to the Egyptian use of hieroglyphics, to Old English, to more than 6,500 languages spoken around the world today, the advances that humans have made in language is remarkable and inspiring. The ability to speak, read, write and understand more than one language is also remarkable and expands the liberties in life, especially for young people. High school students should be required to take at least two years of a foreign language class in order to graduate, as many recent studies support the benefits of doing so. Students who have learned a foreign language in high school have proven to have a
