In contemporary society, English, which is studied as the second language, has become an international language. China is a typical example showing the popularity of English around the world. More specifically, Chinese students have even been studying English in their primary school. Because of different cultures, histories, and religious, the Chinese and English languages have a multitude of dissimilarities. Chinese students have enormous trouble in learning English. An ESL instructor, to be successful in teaching Chinese students, should understand these profound differences in terms of pronunciation, writing, and grammar.

In addition, there are front and back nasals in Chinese, like “en” and “eng”, but English doesn’t have these two syllables. All of these significant pronunciations make Chinese students confused; also, it makes multiple misunderstanding. Thus the ESL instructor can pay more attention to the students’ pronunciations in terms of syllables, tones, and nasals.
Having learned the pronunciation and the meaning of that new word, students want to remember it and know how to spell it. Chinese students also have trouble in writing area due to the fact that the writing system of these two languages is different. Chinese is written in a square shape, so Chinese words are also called square words. For instance, the sentence “My name is Zhuqing Shi.” will be written “我的名字是施竹箐。” in Chinese. English words have no certain shape. Also, the arrangement of Chinese writing can be written from the top to the bottom or from right to left, but English can only be written left to right. Moreover, there is no capital word in Chinese, so it leads Chinese students make mistakes in writing proper nouns in English. More practices should be given to students, and instructors should mention all letters should be capital in a proper noun.
Last but not the least, the grammar in two languages is similar in general. Both of them have subject, verb, and object in one sentence;
