Bruce Willis once proclaimed that, “Art imitates life and, sometimes, life imitates art. It is a weird combination of elements.” And weather it be movies, TV shows, or even music, we are all exposed and influenced by the media. However, while the media may be influential to society, it is still a business and a complicated one at that. Everything in entertainment starts as a business and how the public responds/receives it is what makes it social. This business can have both positive and negative effects on society. It all depends on how far the entertainment business pushes the envelope. The entertainment business only cares about what sells. If scary movies are really popular that’s what they’ll produce. Just like if rap or country …show more content…
Originally, the song was released as part of the business side of entertainment; it is the audience that turned it into a social event (same thought applies to any type of entertainment). Pharrell’s song recently came up in the news after a group of teenagers were arrested in Tehran for posting a video of them dancing to the song “Happy.” Within two hours of the video being posted, 13 people connected the video were arrested for running afoul of Islamic codes of behavior that call for modesty in attire and behavior. Six of the people that were arrested claimed that they had no idea that the video was going to be posted online and were released. Another six were forced to repent on live television and were kept in prison. Authorities in Iran said that this should serve as a warning to other young citizens. Officers reported that the teen group’s video was provocative and that it did not uphold to Tehran’s standards. Hassan Rouhani, the president of Tehran spoke about the incident and said “Iran should embrace the Internet rather than view it as a threat.” The president went on to explain that, “We must recognize out citizens’ right to connect to the World Wide Web. Why are we so shaken up? Why have we cowered in a corner, grabbing onto a shield and a wooden sword, lest we take a bullet in this culture war?” This story became a worldwide phenomenon that has traveled around the globe on social media, causing many people to be outraged saying that, “Tehran, a country where
I happen to be sympathetic to that argument, but it's not the one I want to make here. I think there is another way to assess the social virtue of pop culture, one that looks at media as a kind of cognitive workout, not as a series of life lessons. There may indeed be more ''negative messages'' in the mediasphere today. But that's not the only way to evaluate whether our television shows or video games are having a positive impact. Just as important -- if not more important -- is the kind of thinking you have to do to make sense of a cultural experience. That is where the Sleeper Curve becomes visible.
In fact, Media tells you what is important in life and influences the choices we make daily. Instead of coming up with our own creative ways to dress, live, act, talk etc, "We try to keep up with (or ahead of) the Joneses. " People feel compelled to buy or consume, and are only briefly satisfied by the things they have right now. As soon as people see someone else with something new or a new invention is created they jump right on the following train to go get whatever it may be so that they are up to date. Media determines your perception of life and Perspective goes a long way in building confidence to pursue challenges, make steps towards big dreams, and enjoy the little gifts in
Today popular culture has a substantial effect on our lives. It can affect what we wear, what music we listen to, or even how we behave. Many people decide what clothes to buy depending on what is in style or what celebrities are wearing. The same happens when people choose what movies to see or what music to download. While pop culture may seem harmless, it exposes people of all ages to sex, drugs, and violence. Children and teenagers all over the world are watching these shows or listening to these types of music. They take what they hear or see and develop bad habits or make poor decisions. Popular culture including movies, music, and franchises mostly has a negative effect on countries who import it.
The potential of entertainment to affect society is great and some would argue that it has the capacity to ruin society such as Neal Gabler a critic of entertainment who in his book Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality that entertainment has the capacity to ruin society. If we look at both more recent iterations of entertainment or even if we look at some forms of classic literature we can clearly see the harmful ways that entertainment can affect people.
In today’s society, media is present in our lives 24/7 allowing it to have a major influence on our culture in both positive and negative ways.
There is so much that continues to happen in the media that affect all of us especially our kids. The information that the media pours out has social responsibility. Music, clothing, behaviors all have been and can be influenced by the media. You have teenagers that base their clothing on what a lot of these celebrity’s wear. I personally try to stay out of the habit of following trends but it does get hard.
The media we view helps us to understand and help shape our ideas of society. For example, after you watch a show it helps you pick out your deepest values. What you consider to be good or bad, positive or negative, moral or evil. Along with helping you pick out your morals media spectacles help you understand who has the power and who is powerless. Often, the media will dramatize the symbolism of power.
In our world today, media and advertisements can be found anywhere. By age 18, a teenager will have seen 350,000 commercials (heartofleadership.org) People are so easily influenced by iconic people or brands. Brands like Nike, constantly have celebrities advertising their product and have millions of followers. The iconic celebrities have convinced the market that they need that product to be “cool” like them. Jim Morrison once said “Whoever controls the media, controls the mind”. This quote can be seen as quite true. In our culture today, we are born predispositioned to media influence. As a child we looked up to media unknowingly, “65% say that shows like The Simpsons and Married… With Children encourage kids to disrespect parents.” (heartofleadership.org). People can have a huge effect on how people think through the media, and it becomes a powerful thing. A person like Micheal Jordan who was an endorser of Nike is given over $20,000,000 a year because of the influence he can have. Micheal Jordan isn’t the only one to have influences a large amount of people. In 1751, a Pastor names Jonathan Edwards was determined to shake the people of his time back into religious devotion. His sermon is now
In my opinion, the media has been playing tremondous role in our daily life. Exclusively, media producers have more fluence on us than everyone might think. A person would likely to trust and accept one thing on TV or Internet more than from a book because they can easily rewatch it many times in one day, one month, or even in one year. Without any strict moderation on the information flow, many programs can be too harmful to watch, even to
Society embraces the systems and symbols created to communicate in the search of belonging. The systems and symbols are used to convey information and assigns meaning and values to our lives. Often culture is defined as the symbols society uses to express themselves as individuals or groups. Culture is the practice that allows individuals to either agree or disagree with the values and ideas that are portrayed and communication helps to circulate these values.
Even though it may seem that media influences tragedies , media positively affects people in the the U.S. emotionally, keeps the US connected, and inform the U.S. about other cultures and gives the U.S. more diversity.
We cannot deny how big of an impact social media has on our lives now, not only on people but businesses too. It has opened a whole new door to the business world and given them a big opportunity to interact and attract a larger amount of customers. It’s given us a new and faster way of communication by exchanging pictures, stories, news, blogs, online discussions, etc. In exchange businesses have benefited by a long shot just by the click of a button. With the help of the Internet a company no longer is dependent on a particular customer base to survive because now it can reach out to a worldwide audience within seconds. It’s imaginable the countless business attributes of all social media to this day and still is growing. Social media
Despite the fact that we’re already in the 21st century, society continues to show signs of progress and development strongly leaning towards the direction of advancement, constantly evolving. This pattern is no different from the world of advertising, as it has also evolved through the years and quite recently an unexpected technological innovation took the world by storm. It made such a tremendous impact that eventually led to the transformation of traditional marketing, and it’s no other than social media that we all learned to love.
The media is a huge part in everyone's lives and they have a great influence on the actions we partake in on a daily basis. Though adults don't usualy fall into the pressure of the media, young children and teenagers ae highly sussestable to what the media is telling them to do and what's 'cool'. A major action glorified by the media is smoking and it pressures minors to take up the horrible habit as an attempt to be happy or some how be like their favorite celebrity. Media and holly wood especially have both contributed to an era of people smoking and are a direct cause for the increase of youth smoking today.
Media influence is the force by which ideas are injected into people’s lives shaping the very culture of society. This influence is masqueraded through hidden media message, resulting in a change in its audience which can be positive or negative, abrupt or gradual, short term or long term. Although mass media’s influential effect can reach a wide ranged audience as an agent of socialization the responsibility to contain what it releases has not been of importance. “The media’s socially significant obligations are formally ignored.” (A.S. Zapesotskii, 2011, p 9). Media messages can be exerted through many different outlets such as TV shows, music, movies, commercials, news, magazines, games which are all gravitated to entertain audiences ultimately offering personal gratification that can sometimes blur the lines between reality and
