Project Topic/Description Environmental Management systems and principles have been incorporated by organizations and corporations since the introduction of these concepts. These provide the necessary guidance for companies to reduce their impacts on the environment. Environmental Management is not only being applied by the United States (US) regions, but along all countries within the world. Within few decades, other approaches such as social responsibility and sustainable development have arisen. According to ISO 26000:2010 Guidance on Social Responsibility:
Social responsibility is the responsibility of an organization for the impacts of its decisions and activities on society and the environment, through transparent and ethical behavior that:
• Contributes to sustainable development, including health and the welfare of society;
• Takes into account the expectations of stakeholders;
• Is in compliance with applicable law and consistent with international norms of behavior; and
• Is integrated throughout the organization and practiced in its relationships.

Difficult to define, ethical responsibility is the ability to recognize, interpret and act upon multiple principles and values according to the standards within a given field and/or context (Investopedia LLC., 2015). Social responsibility is the concept that businesses develop a positive relationship to the society and environment, which they operate; and not focus, solely on maximizing profits (Stan Mack, 2015).

In the 1980’s, then President Reagan challenged the business community to take on more responsibility to address social problems (Carrol, 2015). Socially responsible actions can benefit local communities as well as the greater societal good.

Being socially responsibility, an individual in upper management must realize how the actions might be able to influence the rest of the environment. Edwin Epstein’s definition of corporate social responsibility supports the idea that corporate responsibility is ethically based in its decisions with the agents associated with the company. Epstein stated, “Corporate social responsibility relates primarily to achieving outcomes from organizational decisions concerning specific issues or problems which have beneficial rather than adverse effects upon pertinent corporate stakeholders” (Carroll, 1996). Social responsibility contains both the responsibility to discover employee misconduct while also maintaining good relationships with those outside of the business. In the business world, social responsibility refers to accountability. There is the accountability of the company to itself, and to the communities where they have a presence. Especially when a business is as large and far reaching as Marriott, they have a responsibility to give back and help to improve society. There are three pillars that make up overall sustainability: social, economic, and environmental sustainability. Social sustainability focuses on all human needs being met and a society functioning properly indefinitely. Economic sustainability is achieving a certain level of economic success indefinitely.
