A hero can be defined in several ways. Someone can be considered a hero by the qualities he or she displays. The epic poem Beowulf, written by an unknown author, describes the most heroic man and role model of the Anglo-Saxon times. This hero Beowulf has all the qualities and traits that a true hero expresses. Beowulf, as depicted in the epic Beowulf, is the prototype of the epic hero, a larger-than-life figure who embodies the virtues and ideals of his culture.

Grendel’s mother is a swamp-hag who lives in a desolate lake. She comes to Heorot seeking revenge for her son’s death. She murders Aeschere, who is one of the king’s best friends and most-trusted advisers. After murdering him, she sinks back down into the lake to return to her house. Beowulf decides to pursue her into the lake to fight her in the underwater house. Beowulf kills her with a sword that was made for a giant. After killing her, he discovers Grendel's body in her underwater house. He cuts off Grendel's head and brings it back to the king as another prize to hang in the mead-hall as a

The Hero’s Journey is made up of a series of landmarks in which any hero follows on their journey. In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus, the main protagonist, follows through each step of this journey. His journey begins with his call to adventure. The start of his epic journey from Troy back home to Ithaca begins with his voyage to the Trojan War. Following when the war adjourned, Odysseus was called to lead his men home from the war which is the call to the journey that is explained in the epic. She’s looking to get revenge on Beowulf because he killed her son. In doing so, she takes Aeschere, King Hrothgar's chief advisor as revenge but she also takes her sons' claw back to her home, leaving tracks behind her. Once everyone figures out that Aeschere is missing, Beowulf volunteers to kill the monster and he tells King Hrothgar that just in case he doesn’t make it back, to send all of his gifts to his uncle, King Hygelac. Beowulf and his men find Grendel's mother by following her tracks back to her home, which is underwater and in doing so, they find Aeschere's bloody head sitting on top of a cliff near the home. Beowulf goes underwater to fight and eventually kills the monster with a magical sword that he found. While he's down there, he looks around and finds Grendel's body and cuts his head off in order to show that he really did slay both monsters. Returning back to King Hrothgar, Beowulf is rewarded with several gifts for him to take back to his home since his quest for King Hrothgar was

The Epic Hero An epic hero is the central figure of an epic. Theres many characteristics that make a hero or an epic hero stand out. They're strong responsible leaders that preform brave deeds with their superior intelligence and courage. In the Trojan war there was two warrior that stood out of all there people one from each opposing side.

King Hrothgar is the ruler of the Danes and is affected by a monster Grendel. Grendel attacks King Hrothgar's Heorot hall every night killing warriors and eating them, Hrothgar is old and cannot protect his people as he did when he was young. Beowulf travels to Heorot Hall to help because Hrothgar helped his father. Beowulf fights and defeats Grendel who goes into the wilderness and dies. Grendel’s mother wants to avenge her son. While all the warriors are sleeping she attacks Heorot Hall but ends up fleeing to a cave underneath a lake. Beowulf tracks her and finds the cave beneath the lake fights her takes a sword that is nearby from her treasure and kills her. That was Beowulf’s second challenge.

Unknown to the warriors, however, Grendel's mother is plotting revenge (see "Grendel's Mother's Attack"). She arrives at the hall when all the warriors are sleeping and carries off Aeschere, Hrothgar's chief advisor along with her son's claw. (Click here to see the infamous claw!) Beowulf offers to dive to the bottom of the lake, find the monster and destroy her. He and his men follow the monster's tracks to the cliff overlooking the lake where Grendel's mother lives. They see Aeschere's bloody head sitting on the cliff. While preparing for battle, Beowulf asks Hrothgar to protect his warriors, and to send his treasures to his uncle, King Hygelac, if he doesn't return safely.
