There are several people that cannot make up their mind. Things do not go as planned and spontaneous things just occur. During pregnancy, the mothers plan their birth plan and the procedure that they would like. Things just happen, and they need to change their plans. There are several debates on the best birth plan. With continuous debates on epidural and natural childbirth, it is difficult to see if one or the other has more benefits. Further investigation will reveal the facts and science along with experiences with epidural and natural childbirth. If there are less factors that cause harm using epidural than natural birth, then they will prefer epidural over natural birth. Morphine is a prescription drug that is used to treat moderate to severe pain. An epidural used to reduce pain during a pregnancy by inserting a needle in the back of the derma mater, derma mater means skin. The epidural is placed in the back of the mid back, in the spine is the spinal epidural. Inserting the epidural in the mid back, it causes the lower limb to go numb. When the lower limbs go numb, the women can’t feel …show more content…
It was concluded by the researchers that natural childbirth preparation that included breathing and relaxation training didn’t decrease the need for epidural during labor. It didn’t even improve the birth experience or affect parental stress in early parenthood when compared (Bergström, Kieler, and Waldenström). Although both have their benefits and side effects, both are not greater than the other. They do not hold up to their title. There was a research conducted by Bergström, Kieler, and Waldenström, they had parents do questionnaires to see if they had experienced different type of pain and stress. The results were the same. The main difference were the risk associated with the type of birth
Giving birth should be a beautiful experience even though delivery can be terrifying and discomfort. Even though women have the decision to choose between having a natural childbirth or get an epidural majority of women give birth at a hospital get an epidural. Make sure when you base your decision on what’s best for your infant and not base off anyone influencing you. What constitutes a “Natural childbirth”? A natural childbirth is when a woman gives birth without any medication. You can choose between having a mid-wife and having an at home birth or you can give birth at the hospital without any medication either way is consider giving natural childbirth. According to Kristeen, an epidural is drugs called local anesthetics, such as bupivacaine, chloroprocaine, or liocaine it numbs the abdomen or pelvic region during labor. An epidural is given when the women is about 4 or 5 centimeters dilated (Cherney, par.2-6). In order to get an epidural you have to get a shot in your spine (lower back). In 1909, the first caudal anaesthesia was given for labor pains by a German obstetrical, Walter Stoeckel, and he study 141 cases of healthy laboring women with epidurals. In 1931, the first catheter was used in an epidural. By the 1940s, epidural were being used sporadically for labor but did not gain true momentum until the 1970s. This was in large part due to the fact that other
The American discourse around childbirth pain management includes mostly narcotic pain killers, epidurals and other sources of pain medication while the Middle Eastern discourse around labor pain management includes meditation, herbal substances and breathing exercises. This is important because America’s attitude towards hospitals and doctors is so trusting that we don’t stop and think about what we are putting into our bodies and we blindly accept what they are giving us because it is considered, for the majority, culturally acceptable. Many Middle Eastern women on the other hand, are not allowed to see male doctors, therefore they give birth solely with the help of midwives who have little access to medication and can only help through
Are you a mother-to-be? Are you having trouble trying to figure out whether to have a homebirth or a hospital birth? I sure hope that this paper will
Spinal anesthesia and epidural anesthesia are methods of numbing a part of your body during a medical procedure. They involve an injection of a numbing medicine (anesthetic) in your back, near your spinal cord.
Childbirth is the action of giving birth to a child, it is a process which includes stages such as, the dilation of the cervix, emergence of the baby, then the placenta being expelled. In fact, the mother gets to choose rather or not she has a natural child birth. The mother’s options include, a non-medicated, or a medicated childbirth, in which the mother is prescribed epidural. However, in some instances the mother does not get to choose if she is prescribed with epidural. For example, if the baby is coming sooner than the doctor expected that leads to an emergency birth or if the mother is under eighteen, then the mother may have to give birth unmediated. Epidural is a powerful drug, so any mother under the age of eighteen would need a form
The perception of pain during labor and delivery varies between individuals. Some are able to bear the pain and go ahead with normal vaginal delivery, while who can’t go for a caesarian section, while some opt for the painless epidural delivery.
Natural childbirth holds an iconic status within midwifery context as an opposition to the medicalization of childbirth. (10:394) It is widely emphasized that women are capable and their bodies intended for pregnancy and birth. (6:236) Although it is held as being emblematic, there is not one universally accepted definition of natural childbirth. (6:241, 10:394, 11:1084, 12: 267) In colloquial discussion, natural birth has, over time, become narrowly associated with a birth free from pharmacological or other interventions. (6:241, 10:394) This concept
120 patients were randomized by a computer-generated random allocations sequence into 2 groups of 60. Group I received Interlaminar Epidural Injections with local anesthetic only, and Group II received Interlaminar Epidural Injections with local anesthetic combined with nonparticulate Betamethasone. The study patients as well as the medical staff administering the injections were unaware of the patients’ assigned groups. The injections were also clear so no difference could be observed. An additional blinding was performed by mixing non-study patients coming in for routine injections with study
One reason medicated births are better is because medicated births lessen the pain for the experience for
Experiencing childbirth for the first time can be a daunting task. Asking the important questions, however, is essential in making monumental decisions for newborn babies. Perhaps one of the most controversial topics of pregnancy is pain management. Some women want a natural birth while others request medication to ease the experience. Whether you do or don’t want medication it’s crucial to know your opinions. For many mothers, the solution to contractions is an epidural. Essentially an epidural is an injection of anesthetic made in the lower back.
Changes in medicine have not improved child birth. People might say that “physicians [are] most qualified to attend births.”(Leggitt) or that “formula [can] supplement the meager amount of milk”(Behrmann) a woman could produce. However the effects of pain medication, and the lives that could be saved tell a different story.
Childbirth is a beautiful thing. After the hours of labor, there is nothing more special than having the newly mother able to hold her child the minute after it’s born. It makes the pain that you had just experienced go away because all that matters in the world is that newborn child in your arms. During labor, every woman has her own experience but one common experience is the pain. According to Kitzinger (1978) “Labor pain can have negative or positive meaning, depending on whether the child is wanted, the interaction of the laboring woman with those attending her, her sense of ease or dis-ease in the environment provided for birth, her relationship with the father of her child and her attitude to her body throughout the reproductive
Childbirth can be described as one of the most rewarding and also painful experiences in a woman’s life. Most women choose some type of method to ease pain, however, there has been a lot of controversy over with pain management method is the most effective. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control), In 2013, there were 3,932,181 births recorded in the United States, 32.7% of those births were surgical procedures. In 2012, 1.36% of recorded births occurred out-of-hospital, meaning these births took place mostly in homes or birthing centers. Without the option of medicine that a hospital provides, how were these women able to manage their pain during labor and delivery. There are many different methods for easing pain during childbirth, some methods involve the use of medicine and surgery, and others include natural techniques, such as hypnosis, Lamaze, and many others. It is a personal preference of the parents over which method is right for the needs of the mother and child. This can be an overwhelming decision for new parents to make because they have to take into consideration the safety of the mother and child, pain management for the mother and desire for medical involvement.
The very first question that I had when I began this paper was why are so many women opting to receive a cesarean section when a vaginal birth has many more favorable outcomes, so after doing some research I came across an article entitled “Cesarean section or vaginal birth- What difference does it make,” this article talks about the differences between a cesarean section and a vaginal birth and within the article a definite line is drawn between a safer choice of delivering naturally and the more burdensome surgery of having a cesarean section. I was astonished to read that “ Despite all this, the vast majority of women would still prefer to have a normal, straightforward
Is natural birth better then medicated birth? Many women ask themselves this very question when they are expecting. They are two completely different options that lead to the same outcome, but which choice is the best? The difference between a medicated and a natural birth is that a medicate birth consists of an anesthesia (epidural) given to the mother to help with the labor pains. An epidural is a regional anesthesia that blocks nerve impulses from the lower spinal segments. It is also combined with a type of narcotic such as morphine, epinephrine or fentanyl (“Birth and beyond”). A natural birth consists of no medication whatsoever and it’s not evasive. I found two articles that explain why a natural birth is superior than a medicated birth and why it is the most popular form of birth amongst mothers. The first article is called “Why I am choosing Natural Childbirth” by Brittany Dixon. Brittany is a mother who explains why she is choosing the natural birth and the benefits that come with it. The second article is written by Shaylen Nelson and it is named “My birth story & why I will never elect for an epidural ever again.” Shaylen is a woman who took the epidural and shares how it has affected her life forever. In the following essay, we will analyze the benefits that come with a natural birth and the risks an epidural might come with.
