Equal Pay Discrimination Against Women

Almost one hundred years after the Equal Rights Act was passed, giving equal law to women in 1920, women are still earning an average of 23 cents less than their male counterparts. This translates to full time working women having to work an extra 44 days out of a year to earn the same as men. According to the Pew Research Center, interruptions such as maternity leave can affect long term salaries. 40% of mothers said they took a prolonged period of time off from work whereas 24% of fathers responded the same. Pew Research also found that 18% of women felt discriminated against at work due to their gender compared to 10% of men. The UN Women was founded in 2011 and works to achieve full gender equality internationally. This organization has created numerous documents and agreements that universally unify the efforts of countries to eliminate gender discrimination. For example, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) has over 185 countries and acts as a basic “women’s bill of rights.” UN Women fights against a variety of issues, such as human rights, HIV/AIDS, economic empowerment, conflicts, and political participation. The event was on the same day as the 61st Commission on the Status of Women, which is the largest governmental assembly that focuses on gender equality and feminism. The UN Women Global Equal Pay Coalition offers another reason why women earn much less; Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka stated that the gender pay gap “reflects the unjustifiably diminished position of many women in society” and that women tend to centralize in few jobs that are usually underpaid, like teaching, where 85% of all primary school through high school educators are female. Men dominate more professional and managerial jobs, which represents a distinct correlation between the gender differences in pay. UN Women invited celebrities such as Patricia Arquette, an Oscar winning actress, and Abby Wambach, an Olympic gold medalist and retired soccer star, to speak at the forum. By inviting such influential women to advocate at the Platform, Mlambo-Ngcuka hopes to increase support and have people reach out to policy makers to see a change. Another program the UN Women recently launched is the #StopTheRobbery campaign, which is a metaphor for society robbing women of their lost 23 cents. Hundreds of thousands of tweets, Instagrams and Facebook posts utilizing the hashtag have already been shared, which reaches millions of people
