In a billion dollar industry such as Hollywood, you would think women are paid equally to their male counterparts but that is not so. Actresses to studio executives are paid less than their male colleagues.Women in Hollywood should have equal pay. Why should we care about people that are making millions more than us? We should care because it sets an example for young girls. Young girls idolize women in Hollywood and their work. Caring would teach them that they are just as equal to a male colleague, and they do not have to take orders from them A recent email hack revealed actresses that are being paid less than their male counterparts. Jennifer Lawrence was one of the actresses. Her male colleagues Christian Bale, Jeremy Renner and Bradley
Women employees make less than men in the same job position. “It is an absolute scandal that American women continue to earn just $0.77 for every dollar men earn.” (Sen. Mikulski) There should not be a gender pay gap. Workers should be given salaries based on their work ethics, degrees, and academic credentials.
As long as an American woman is putting in the same amount of hours with the same qualifications and experience in the same occupation as an American male, and yet taking home a wage that is any lower, she is not being treated fairly as an equal. Contrary to many arguments, it’s undeniable that a wage gap exists, and while there are various ideas as to the most probable cause, there is no reason why this gap should continue to go uncorrected or unchanged. Our government should take concrete steps to close the gender wage gap because it violates women’s rights and equality.
In the 21st century, a female will earn less than a male. “Will I have to explain to my daughter that her brother is gonna make more money doing the exact same job because he’s a man? If they both played sports since they were three years old, they both worked just as hard, but because he’s a boy, they’re gonna give him more money?” Serena Williams said in Glamour’s July issue (May). Gender roles play a big part in the 21st century, either with the pay gap or how someone is
If I were given the opportunity to change a policy, I would want to change the wage gap between men and women. Statistically, women make 79 percent of what a man makes, regardless of their education credentials. This percentage, however, varies amongst women of different ethnicities. African American women and Latinas earn 63 to 52 percent of what a white male would. Interestingly enough, in the workforce, the number of highly educated women are higher than men. This discrimination makes it harder for women to earn a high salary and make a living, especially if they are a single parent. This unequal pay differs throughout the country in different states. States like California have a lower wage gap at around 10 to 15 percent, and other states
Many women today work just as hard as their male coworkers and have the same amount of experience and education, maybe even more, but make less money than their coworkers. In the United States and all around the world women are dealing with this problem. There is even a national day that focuses on this exact problem and it doesn’t pertain to one certain industry either. In fact, it is all throughout society. While some education and experience provide more value for women all around the world females are being held back from their potential just because they aren’t men. Society shows this every day. One example of this is how the lead actress in Shameless, Emmy Rossum, is speaking out and demanding equal pay after finding out she has been paid less since the television series started. Rossum plays a key role only to find that some of her male coworkers are making more (Jensen, 2017). The problem is that women are working just as hard as men or even harder, but they are still being deprived.
The opportunities that NHS provides and would provide me if I was to be accepted are vast. NHS would provide me an extra element I would be able to add to my transcript to help me get into a university that I would like to join. I believe that if I were to join NHS it would greatly help me get into that college and that program. NHS would not only help me get into college but it would also recognize the effort I put into my school work and my sports. I have always taken the hardest and the most rigorous courses and excelled at them as well.
Amy Adams even questioned the producers about the pay gap. She also exclaimed that she got payed 2% less then men in American Hustle. For many years she has been trying to fix the pay gap and resolve it and she is still trying to this day. It's still improving though but very slowly.
“Equal play. Equal pay.” –U.S. Women’s National Team (Reiher). The gender pay gap is surprisingly still a large problem today. Not only in soccer, but in every sport women exert the most effort, yet they do not receive the credit. The U.S. Woman’s National Team should receive an equal amount of pay as the men’s team because they have won more titles, they are better soccer players, and they bring in more income.
We as women go against lots of discrimination based on our genders and that needs to be stopped. Pay inequality isn't at all new news, it has been a problem for a while and women have had to work harder just to earn the same amount as their male coworkers. Before and after the equal pay act was passed in 1963, there has been a large gap in the economy between men and women. In our jobs, all across America we face a pay gap especially in our sport teams. Pay gaps in sports are big problems especially for female athletes.
In 2014, the Sony Hack revealed a paid list of the celebrities in the movie industry and discovered the equal pay difference between men and women. Hollywood was shocked at this revelation. The lists indicated that male actors were paid higher than the female actresses in the same movie, regardless of their role in the movie. After Sony’s email was hacked, Jennifer Lawrence spoke out about sexism in Hollywood through her essay entitled: “ Why do I make less than my male co-stars?”( Lam, 2015). Through the Sony hack, Hollywood, a visibly huge and powerful movie industry, can be a role model for developing gender paid equality.
Equal Pay Day this year is Tuesday, April 12, 2016. The National Committee on Pay Equity started this day to act as a constant reminder of how women are still victims of wage inequality. It is very important to remember how women are still discriminated against, and how the pay gap hasn’t been getting better. Equal Pay Day is always on a Tuesday because it represents, “how far into the next work week women must work to earn what men earned the previous week” (pay-equity.org). Many women who work the same hours as men are paid less, and are forced to work longer hours to have a substantial income. In 2010, women were making only 77 cents on average for every dollar men made, and the wage gap is even more severe for women of color.
Imagine having successful movies and awards while being underpaid, this was Jennifer Lawrence’s experience. Jennifer had successful movies such as American Hustler and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and was underpaid while some of her male co-stars have not had successful films in years (Khon). It is ridiculous that an actress gets paid less than her male co-stars when they are doing the same job. As all of this came as a surprise to Jennifer as she found out through an email hack. She said, “When the Sony hack happened and I found out how much less I was being paid than the lucky people with dicks”(Lawrence).
A couple of months ago, I read an essay on the pay of actors in Hollywood. It was an essay written by Jennifer Lawrence where she criticizes the pay gap between male and female actors in Hollywood. She realized that she earned considerable less than her male co-worker (Lawrence). What I found most interesting about the article is how Lawrence tackled the situation. She was not mad at her employer but at herself for not negotiating enough to get the pay she deserved. This is, unfortunately, not something new for a woman. Women tend to be less outspoken because it does not fit the stereotypical gender roles (Wood 157). Lawrence claims that there was an “element of wanting to be liked” when she negotiated her deal with her employer (Lawrence),
President Kennedy, a young and articulate president, had a strong desire for giving ever man their equal rights. It was Abraham Lincoln who emancipated slaves, but in reality, it is a reversed role. And it is not a white man that has save the Negro, but the other way around. President Kennedy made it his goal for these Negro citizens to be treated equally as the white man. He took action in diminishing racial prejudice and bringing light to the error of our previous ways. Much like President Kennedy, civil rights activist, Martin Luther King Jr. had taken strong action on civil rights, thus encouraging the confidence of the people that change is about to happen and it will reshape the world for the better (Speaking of Equality).
Who knew one thing could cause such an impact on someone's life? Danny was impacted by a moment in his life that changed him and caused him to be different. Danny was a guy who lived alone in a home he once shared with his parents. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, where he and his K9 partner Cody were assigned to the K-9 bomb unit. Danny and K9 Cody were sent to search areas to make sure no explosives existed before troops moved in. Danny was honorably discharged from the Marines and is now a war veteran. The war was not good for Danny and it really changed him. First, he became an amputee. Danny lost his leg below the knee on his left side. The other thing that made him different was he now suffered from PTSD. Danny doesn’t
