The sweet sound of a woman's voice singing fills the whole room, and with this, a man stands. This man is in gray and expressionless. Three others as the man stand; all the same. They rush to the women and restrain her. No one is better than anyone. No one must be individual. Reform, stay in line, fairness, unity, equalize and destroy. The women should have not sang if she happened to be better at singing than others around her. . . this is the way. Complete and utter equality between all men can be harmful to one's spirit and humanity. This is shown in the story Anthem, by Ayn Rand, it states, “And they answered, ‘Since the council does not know of this hole, there can be no law permitting us to enter. And everything which is not permitted
In the book Anthem by Ayn Rand there are many character changes, and all of them crucial to the story. With Equality 7-2521 being the biggest. I believe he had the biggest change because he was born in a society where your life is set with no questions asked even if you do not like what you receive. With these regulations, Equality 7-2521 followed them until he had a change of heart. In the first chapter of Anthem Equality says “It is a sin to write this. It is a sin to think words no others think…” (Anthem , Rand A.) Equality 7-2521 is following what he is told to do but at the same time is doing what is forbidden. Therefore with Equality is slowly drifting to a change of heart on his feeling about the society as a whole.
Throughout the book Anthem, written by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 changes his perspective on how he views the leaders of society. As he starts to realize that there is more meaning to his life than he previously thought, he changes his view which leads him to start thinking of himself as an individual instead of just another member of his society. He no longer accepts the way his government is telling him to live his life as a proper way to live. Equality 7-2521, is correct in denouncing his leaders of their morality as he finally starts to realize that the leaders are hindering him and the rest of the society from expanding their knowledge in development of technology and advancements in the medical field.
The novel "Anthem" by Ayn Rand talks about a man named Equality 7-2521 and his time in the Home of the Street Sweepers and how he has committed many sins including writing in his journal. Equality 7-2521 and International 4-8818 find stairs leading into the darkness and find a tunnel. International 4-8818 wants to report the tunnel to the World of Council, but Equality 7-2521 doesn't let him. Each night, for only three hours, while the Street Sweepers are at the City Theatre, he goes to the tunnel to study. They melt metals, mix acids, and cut open the bodies of dead animals. Equality 7-2521 also stated that the men are not allowed to look at other women other then the only women they are assigned to them and vice versa. He is attracted to a woman, Liberty 5-3000, he thinks of her as the "Golden One."
In the book Anthem, Equality 7-2521 risks his life just so he can find himself individually. The society that he lives in is a society where all men do the same job and are forbidden to have their own thoughts. Equality 7-2521 is a guy that is fascinated with the phenomena of nature and can’t help but wonder what power of the sky causes lightning and how it can be harnessed to human benefit. When Equality 7-2521 discovered a tunnel in an uncharted forest, he secretly started to perform scientific experiments that led to the creation of electricity. He knows that he is taking risks by showing the World Council of Scholars his invention, but he thinks that his invention could change the world for the better.
Ayn Rand wrote a short novel called Anthem. Anthem is similar to the known movie The
“We are one in all and all in one. There are no men but only the great WE, One, indivisible, and forever” ( Rand. 19). In Equality 7-2521’s life, he was forced to be equal to the people who were around him. He couldn’t be different from society, because it was a sin. Equality was born with a curse which made him different from his brothers. He was cursed with the quick learning ability. He tried to be like other people who were not as smart as him, but somehow his plan never succeeded. Although he tried to forget his lessons, it always came back to his remembrance. Anthem interested me when Equality 7-2521 met Liberty 5-3000, how he discovered electricity, and how he wanted his rights. Society wanted the people including Equality 7-2521 to be equal. Even though Equality 7-2521 went through some hard times, he finally got his rights at the end of the book.
In the novel Anthem by Ayn Rand, the leading character , Equality 7-2521, lives in a collectivist society where the citizens have no control over their thoughts, actions, or lives. They are brainwashed to believe that the outcome of working together is righteousness, and working individually is evil. This is the basic standard in which this society lives in, therefore the citizens replace “I” with “We” in their thoughts, speaking, and writings. At the close of the book, Equality 7-2521 becomes an egoist, his new philosophy is that he needs to work for the good of himself, and based on the society he was raised in, the reader could agree with Equality’s new ideology about living life.
Equality 7-2521 evolution as his own man creates the tone of Anthem as a twisted dystopian world, as it also foreshadows his inner turmoil regarding the considerable merits of being in a group and being a sole individual. As the reader continues to understand the character a bit more, it's clear that Equality 7-2521 will be a probable defiant who will be working his way to defying the rulers of his world and who will undeniably reach the point of radicalization, but will have to deal with the guilt society has pushed him to because of all the years of manipulation. While reading this novel, it is very easy to feel sympathy for the character since his "sin" of individual creativity is absurdly non serious offense and also the possible consequences are ominously grave. It is quite a change towards the end of the novel, when Equality 7-2521 rejects to all of these ideas. At first, he begins to feel cynical concerning
In the novella Anthem by Ayn Rand, Equality 7-2521 has changed how he views the leaders of his society, and now is very critical of the leaders, referring to them in moral terms. He lives in a very collectivism society, where his leaders control the aspects of the citizen’s lives. The citizens are characterized by a number rather than a name. All the brothers of this society are not allowed to speak to or look at any one of his brothers or women. They follow a repeated schedule day by day, following the totalitarian rules given.
How would you feel if a council put one in a working system based on who you are and how you
No “I” and no “you”, just “we.” How could we live in a world like that? Ayn Rand’s book shows a twisted and different form of collectivism. Everyone is told what they have to do for the rest of their future. Children are not even allowed to know who their parents are and are never given the chance to meet them. Although, only one shines in the society that no one else may see until now. Equality finds it difficult to find individualism in his life and in the rules of his society. Equality eventually finds individualism in escaping, to a haven of his own, from his odd society. Equality can then find peace with himself and can live in a more individualistic life in his newfound house with “The Golden One” in the forbidden and
The city in Anthem had numerous rules and controls that severely prohibit anyone within the city to do anything that even might make them more of an individual person. These guidelines have been strictly enforced and for many years no one has even thought to break them. In the book Equality feels differently deep within himself and strives to rebel, even though he knows it is not what the leaders of the state would accept or even tolerate. Going against all he knows, Equality breaks from the city, with his light that he created in the subway from the unmentionable times, and flees into the uncharted forest. His beloved Liberty or “The Golden One” hears of his crimes and finds Equality and they flee together. They broke all rules, and avoided all controls they had ever known and plan to rebuild society.
Today all people laugh at memories from their past, but most are happy memories unlike Equality from anthem when he laughs about being called the damned. Many things in the book anthem show evidence of equality doing things that lead up to him being called the damned. In the book anthem equality is trying to find a way to get something that can change history for him and his people except there are a lot of obstacles. The Book is called “Anthem” by - Ayn Rand. There is a young man and his name is equality and he is sent to work in the tunnels for the rest of his life. His entire society is based off of lies and there are several levels of power, and they are the councils. Later in the book equality is working in the tunnel and comes across
All success starts with inner motivation. The most talented people that are living have an inner motivation that started their success story. The book “Anthem,” by Ayn Rand portrays the character Equality's main motivation which is individuality. Through his fearless discoveries he finally realizes the truth and that truth will set him free.
The story Anthem takes place in the future, however, there is no technology to support that era. This book displays no flying cars, or jet packs that most people today would associate with the future. Instead, society has regressed to a time where not even a light bulb remains. As the story follows Equality 7-2521 through his transition from a simple street sweeper, to a free man with his own family, the oppression and draconian laws of this new society is documented by Equality.
