Erik Almas: Artist Analysis

1. It was hard to get the feet to look realistic. The detailing part was hard to. Like you had to get all the contrast, structure, movement, and realism. It was hard especilly because in my painting my feet were small. Another hard part was getting the right shade. Like ppaint the feet a color and then make it a little darker for the areas that neede shading and dimension to give a realistic/ contrast to distinguish the difference. It was hard to get a shade that wasnt dramatically drker that the feets color.

Kehinde Wiley is a New York based artist whose paintings focus on the themes of empowering black men and combining classical and contemporary styles.

Art is something that can be described and expressed in several different ways to communicate ideas and emotions through visualizations. Through art we are able to see the world like never before. It inspires and motivates us to be creative. We are able to think further and beyond. In addition, art gives us the ability to understand what artists are trying to display and the messages they are trying to convey through their works. Art can be found anywhere and created by anyone (Dewitte, Larmann, and Shields 29-30).

In the contemplation of art, or rather the conceptually intangible definition it currently possess, it is imperative to be mindful that “art” has been utilized as a promotional device, ceremonial item, aesthetically purposed article or perhaps none of these or all. It is because of this vague term that Carolyn Dean, in her text, “The Trouble with (The Term) Art”, makes a case for the consequences of applying the term “art” in societies that lacked such a notion which also accounts for the Western-centric lens the field intrinsically utilizes when viewing non-Western art. The claim is deftly supported by the utilization of expert accounts in the subject, alternative perspectives for what is considered the current norm, and self-examining questions,

Frank Romero’s Chicano art served as a point of communication that illustrated the role of Chicano culture in Los Angeles, and also drew attention to the social and political implications that manifested on the behalf of the rise of this cultural perspective. Throughout his career, he produced works such as “the police brutality series” which drew attention to political issues, and works like “Going to the Olympics” and “History of the Chicano,” which illustrated the beauty and pride of Chicanos in LA. Moreso, the paintings “La Llorona” and “El Teatro Campesino” displayed the origins of chicanismo and the cultural affiliations that originated in Latin America.

Leroy Neiman was an american artist known for painting great artwork with brightly colored acrylics. A great impressionist, Leroy created most of his paintings with the feel and flow of almost a cartoonic vibe. His art is like he took an ordinary picture and completely recreated it with a childs coloring book. Colorful, bright, yet sophisticated looking.

The two works of art that I have chosen to analyze are 1) Jordan Casteel. Miles and JoJo. 2014. Oil on canvas, 54” x 72” and 2) Aaron Fowler. He Was. 2015. Mixed media, 134” x 165” x 108”. The themes that these works of art represent in regards to the exhibit are love, family, and pain. However, they also fall into other thematic categories. The main theme that seems to apply to both “Miles and JoJo” and “He Was” is Human Experience. Additionally, these arts differ in some ways.

This next painting was one of my favorites that I saw at this gallery, called, Aztec Goddess created by Adolfo Gonzalez. This is a rather large piece of work with amazing details. The Artist used lines to give the shape of the leaves and the headdress. The artist used many different shapes to make this painting such as in the headdress and the thing on which it appears that she is sitting on they both have a lot of details. The Artist put a lot of emphasis into the top of the painting where her head is and the headdress which symbolizes importance in Aztec culture. This painting even though it was only in black in white the amount of detail and the usage of space were well put together on this piece.

When comparing the two artworks it is clear that nursing is the main focus of each piece. They both depict a nurse in a long gown with a cap and some sort of apron or cape. Both pieces show what goes into being a nurse. The piece by Grant shows the compassion that’s needed and the piece by Perez shows the technical side, with the taking of the vitals and the helping to feed the patient. That’s as far as the comparison goes for these two pieces.

The history of art dates back to ancient times. Artwork can be, and was, found around the world. What makes art interesting is that it can be created in any way, shape or form with any materials. It seems that the artwork can also tell us a lot about the artist. Art seems to be simply, a direct, visual reflection of the artist’s life. Therefore, one can assume that an artist’s life experiences and beliefs directly influence their art. If we look at examples from different periods of art we will be able to see the connection between the artist and the art.
