Erik Spiekerman Erik Spiekermann was born on 30th May in the year 1947 in Stadthagen, which is the capital of Schaumburg district in Lower Saxony in Germany. He studied History of Arts and English at Berlin’s Free University in Germany. He is a type designer, a graphic designer, a typographer, an information architect and an author of many books and articles on type and typography. He also worked at freelance in London between 1972 up to 1979. He is a member of the German Design Council board and past president of the International Society of Typographic Designers (ISTD) and the International Institute for Information Design (IIID). He is also a professor at the University of the Arts in Bremen and he received an honorary doctorate from Pasadena Center of Art. As a typographer, he has made many accomplishments in his life such as being the founder of the following typefaces: FF Meta, ITC Officina, Lo-Type, FF Unit, Berliner Grotesk, FF Info and many more. Major accomplishments Erik Spierkmann founded Meta Design in the year 1979 which was by then the largest design firm in Germany. It had its offices in Berlin, San Francisco, and London. Meta Design was able to combine clean and good looking information design and also corporate design systems which were complex for various clients such as Berlin Transit, Skoda, Lexus, Audi, and Volkswagen among others.
