Adventure is defined as the unknown, a challenge with a goal in mind, and discovering the world. The definition of adventure may vary from person to person depending on their likes, dislikes, or even experience. Adventure does not always mean you need to take risks putting your life on the line or being a “thrill junkie”. Many find adventure in not knowing what the road ahead will hold. Now that I have touched base on Wilderness Sports it is important to grasp the true meaning of adventure education. Adventure education, although is closely related to Wilderness sports, is different. “Adventure Education uses human-powered outdoor pursuits to help people learn about interpersonal and intrapersonal relationships” (Plymouth State University, 2017). So as a teacher of Adventure education you will be focusing on 3 main areas when directing a class of students. One, you must teach students to learn the professional and technical skills to compete competently and safely in these specific environments. Two, I will teach how to instruct others to convey the information important and necessary in these adventure activities.

Adventure travel is a type of tourism involving exploration or travel with risk and it potentially requires specialized skills and physical exertion. Adventure tourism has grown in recent decades, as tourists they prefer to experience different kind of vacations.

Adventure tourism is an outdoor leisure activity that generally takes place in an unusual, exotic, remote or wilderness setting, sometimes involving some form of unconventional means of transportation and tending to be associated with low or high levels of physical activity.

However, not all activities that occur in an outdoor setting constitute as adventure and adventurous behaviour does not necessarily mean visiting exciting places.

According to the U.S. based Adventure Travel Trade Association, adventure travel may be any tourist activity, including two of the following three components: a physical activity, a cultural exchange or interaction and engagement with nature.

The above citation briefly describes the experience of adventure traveler. Adventure tourism is interaction to the new environment and cultural setting which creates a unique experience for the travelers. Mountain expeditions have become one of the main parts of adventure tourism. Mountains in particular attract many backpackers and adventure seeker tourists. The factors that have facilitated the emergence of adventure tourism which has made impact on mountaineering are ‘a deferring of control to experts, a proliferation of promotional media including brochures, and the application of technology in adventurous settings making the urban location and extraordinary experience of adventure holiday’ (Beedie & Hudson, 2003).
