Why am I living my life half exhausted wandering from place to place doing what I’m told when I’m told to make myself a living? The first thing that comes to most people’s minds when they think of someone being optimistic might be, unrealistic, cheesy, or “sounds like a guidance counselor”. But being optimistic doesn’t mean you are unrealistic, simply hopeful. I’m not talking Snow and Charming from Once Upon a Time, it is not humanly possible to be that hopeful. Hopefulness comes with the territory when one is optimistic.
When I see someone being very pessimistic I know now that they can be changed to have a more optimistic view. I can even change my own life. If I am felling very pessimistic I can remember this and how there is always a better way to think about something. Knowing my signature strengths is important too because I know what and how I deal with things. I can alter how I do things to better support the person I truly am. Optimism can mean the difference in a patient’s outlook. The first example is when I walked onto the unit one day; a family member approached me and told me that it was nice to see a smiling face. That meant a lot to me. Patients and their families both experience hardships and emotional changes when someone is sick or hurt. Leading me to the next example, being optimistic when my patients fear that they may not return to their former state of independence and acknowledging their concerns. Many patients have these valid fears, and being the positive outlook instead of agreeing with them sometimes helps get them to the finish line.
I have a theory that being an optimist causes you to smile more and frown less. Frowning causes forehead wrinkles and smiling causes smile lines. I guess I prefer smile lines over forehead wrinkles any day of the week. As a self-proclaimed optimist, I have my own definition of what an optimist is.
