Epic Hero’s: Beowulf and Achilles
Stories of epic heroes have been passed down through time. Two of those epic heroes are Beowulf and Achilles. They both came from different cultures and fought in different ways. Beowulf wouldn’t always use his sword to fight if his opponents were unarmed He would fight unarmed. Achilles always used his weapon to fight in his battles. They were both considered hero’s even though they were from different moments in time in different parts of the world. Beowulf came from the country of Geat to fight a demon, Grendal that was killing Danish soldiers. During the fight Beowulf killed the demon by ripping of his arm. The Danish king celebrated his victory and hung Grendal’s arm. The demons mom came seeking revenge and killed one of the Kings advisors. To avenge this death Beowulf went to the swamp and killed the swamp hag in her underwater lair. “As he nears the murky lake floor, Grendel’s mother senses his approach. She lunges at him and clutches him in her grip, but his armor, as predicted, prevents her from crushing him” (McDougal, 53). Her head was brought to the king and hung on display. He had won many battles before he quit fighting the Trojans. In an attempt to win the war Achilles lent his armor to his best friend who was then killed by Hector. Achilles vowed revenge. Hector had run from Achilles but was finally tricked in to fighting Achilles and stood up to him. “Achilles said Now I must go to look for the destroyer of my great friend Achilles searched for him and had finally found Hector, Hector told Achilles I will no longer fear you as before” (McDougal76 ). Achilles had ended up killing Hector and dragging his body around from the back of Achilles cart tearing the body apart running it threw the city and destroying
