Eventually they moved out of Cullercoats, out of necessity really, there were too many of them now and they needed a bigger place, so they moved from Cullercoats to Bridge Road South in North Shields, half way up, opposite the park. Then later they would move again, this time to Woodlea Crescent, well, there were six of them by now, and Tom on the way too. But the house in Woodlea Crescent was due to be demolished so they had to move again, to Percy Main, then eventually to their current address in Harthope Drive, also in North Shields, but that was much later, when it was just Margaret and Alec, because that’s a retirement home. But they enjoyed their walks out, at a weekend, no matter what the weather. The Fish Quay, all the way along to Collingwood Monument, along the pier and back again, lovely! Or climbing on the old Pavilion at Smith’s Park. It didn’t always go smoothly though, they lost their arrow from the bow and arrow they had just made, on the Pavilion roof, so Ernie had the job of climbing up to retrieve it, which would have been fine if he hadn’t fallen off in the process, it’s okay though, he only broke his arm! They’re surprised, looking back, that the parkies didn’t catch them. Poor times, but also, very happy times as a young family. Or if it wasn’t that, it was off to the beach, and each Easter Margaret would always find ways to get all the children all new clothes, so they’d be extra smart for going to watch the Boys Brigade Easter March, then it was off to Grandma’s for Spam Fritters and chips, another treat they all enjoyed very much. Holidays were obviously few and far between, but there was always the once-a-year club trip with the Percy Main Club, of which Margaret has been a life long member. Sometimes Corbridge, sometimes Crimdon Dene or Hexham, or Morpeth, playing in the river, it was great. I asked about friends and social life and I was told, “mum and dad were always out”. Saturday
