remembered standing in the back hall adjacent to the cashier’s room. There stood a long counter where everyone gathered and read the schedules and memos for the upcoming week. He stood there one day with his hands holding onto the counter while Kenner slipped up next to him and with the gentlest of hip checks whispered lets go get them big guy. She looked at him, winked and went on her merry way to the front desk. Japes did not have a clue and although he turned red as a beet he did nothing. Luckily he did not jump into any relationship with Kenner, as Kenner shortly thereafter ended up with Sonny the young handsome manager from the front desk. A burly man, he managed to come over the top with amazing consistency, and truly thumped the ball. The misses, however, were equally as dramatic and required him to maintain a steady inventory of golf balls. Japes, on the other hand, slightly built, relied on a combination of rhythm and technique to navigate the links. The two enjoyed the 19th hole with plenty of beer and always a steak dinner. Bobo thrived as a professional desk clerk naturally projecting instant understanding to the weary traveler. The ability to instantly bring a corporate guest into a reassuring, professional, and secure environment highlighted an innate gift. If one met Bobo at a cocktail party they would become engaged in comfortable conversation thinking he was a professional of some sort. That is exactly what he was, and indeed one of the best.
His dad was an oil executive with More-money Inc. and so he never wanted for anything. Bobo lived well beyond the means of a desk clerk. There was nothing wrong with this, and in some ways it seemed quite appropriate. Hotels tend to attract people from all walks of life and require a myriad of special skills not readily recognized or appreciated, so if someone could survive and fulfill this calling then the more the merrier.
