People oftentimes remember a life-changing moment or event, by vividly recalling the situation that unfolded. For me, that moment transpired the day I changed into a dark blue shirt, raised my right hand, recited an oath that appeared on a project screen, and uttered those four words, “So help me god.” My journey thereafter, which amounted to saying farewell to fellow colleagues, and a bus and train ride home, was interrupted by a wave of anxiety and trepidation; the apprehension and fear drained the vigor out of me. The adventure was punctuated by a tumultuous sea of thoughts: “What did I just get myself into? Am I ready for this? What can I do for residents that live in a food desert?” That fear, and angst, vacillated between my place of …show more content…
In addition, a team composed of non-profit organizations, a pediatrician, and myself are designing a program that uses storytelling to teach children and their families about nutrition, health and wellness, and sustainability.
Through this opportunity, I have not only reaffirmed my desire to continue working with economically challenged populations, but I have begun to raise questions about the types of mechanisms that can effectively address hunger in the United States of America. Can farmers’ markets adequately supply residents in a low-income community with enough healthful produce? Should municipalities empower non-profit organizations to build community gardens? Do residents who inhabit a low-income community want to shop at a local market or urban farm or garden, or do they prefer to shop at a grocery store situated in the heart of the community? Working in the South End has inspired me to address similar questions in my future work, because I believe that sustainable solutions and the idea of a sustainable city are possible instead of a utopia. For now, I will continue to observe, take notes, and modify, elaborate, and expand my understanding of the difficulties that beset many urban neighborhoods, such as those represented by Albany’s South End.
My reason for applying to the doctorate program in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management at the University of California,
I have witnessed traumatizing events, dying men, being shot, and I went behind enemy lines 11 separate times, all for my beloved country, yet I’m branded AWOL and equated to a coward! I served the Union Army valiantly and gave it my all for 4 entire years. My hard work and dedication were immense, I took on various jobs throughout the four years. Furthermore, I served as a nurse to aid all the wounded, I was a skilled courier and a spy. I love my country for giving me refuge when times were tough, thus, I was willing to give the ultimate sacrifice to preserve it. Countless times, I was nearly killed, but I did not care because I yearned for danger and a way to contribute during the war. I, Franklin Thompson, believe I should be reinstated
Throughout history many races and cultures have been discriminated against for various reasons and there have been many different methods used to discriminate against them. To focus on one race in particular the African American race was discriminated for a long period and was discriminated in various ways throughout this time. The longest and most prominent method used was slavery, then after slavery ended segregation was another method, and lastly African Americans not being treated equally or having the same rights was another method that was used to discriminate against the African American race.
Implementation of the MBDA’s salinity initiatives require heavy effort and planning, including multiple salt interception schemes. The natural approach to removal of salt is to let the Murray river flow into the ocean, so it is essential that the mouth of the river be kept open and outward flow continuously be monitored through electric conductivity units (ECU). There are 18 interception schemes operating as of now, they are large pumping systems that pull groundwater and drainage water from the environment diverting them into a salt basin away from the river. This process is effective as it prevents more than half a million tons of salt yearly from threatening the waterway and reduces the electric conductivity, which means the amount of
At the age of 16, I had won the Junior Canadian National Championships in my division and qualified to be on the Junior National team. Being on the junior national team gave me the opportunity to represent Canada at the 2016 Junior world taekwondo championships, which made me feel very content, thrilled, but as well very nervous. The world championship was to be taken place at Burnaby AB, Canada which made it even better, being in your hometown and being able to represent the hometown country. Since Nationals had taken place in May, and Worlds would be in November, I had quite a while to prepare for this large event. I had trained 2 hours every day from Monday to Thursday, and on Saturday I would train 5 hours. This continued throughout
V2 grimaced as he folded his arms across his chest. A local carnival had arrived in town and was stationed in the open lot across from Toshizou's manor. For the most part, V2 hated crowds of people, they drove him mad, not to mention the odor their bodies gave off when V2 was close enough to smell the blood that ran through their very veins.
It had been two months since the 45th President of the Unites States, Jeff Bush had been elected into office. It had also been two months since Jeff had learned the horrors that lay unseen to the average citizen. Many activist groups were attempting a coup d’état and stage a revolution. This was troublesome for the government as they wanted to maintain a position of power and ensure that these groups did not gain control in fear of disrupting the peace that has lasted for years. These individual uprisings stretched the government to its limit trying to keep the knowledge from the public.
Blane was almost ripe to take over the Lairdship of Edinburgh had his father not been prime. At age 30, he was remarkably handsome and attractive particularly showing traits of a good chief. Slowly but surely, his father has trained him regarding the land they occupied, fought for and won as favors from the King through a long line of rich heritage and valiant ancestry. He was no doubt the prized possession any woman would have wished for.
I glance at the training camp from afar – men frantically eating, spitting, shouting, arguing, showing their muscles, new tattoos, and battle scars. I continue to walk closer to the camp, noticing that the air is oozing with testosterone. It reeks of dirty socks and greasy food. I exclaim to Mushu, my scrawny guardian dragon who hides under my shirt, “I can’t do this. It’s disgusting here and they’ll totally know something’s up when they find out I can’t eat without washing my hands first.” Mushu laughs and assures to me that I just have to play the part and says “Mulan, they're men. And you're going to have to act just like them, so pay attention.” I run frantically into the roll call line, hopefully not garnering any attention from the
Sarah snorts and pulls herself away from Levi and walks over to the desk hauling the seat out. She motions for the man to sit at the desk and he does. She sits sideways and brings down her body against Levi’s as they fall once more into the huge seat. Sarah wraps one arm around Levi's neck and lets the other scratch lightly down his arms.
We finally got to the bowling alley and when we got there Riley runs towards the place in a rush. We sit there for a while not saying anything not saying anything which is strange because Aidan is a talker you can never get him to shut up. Like for example one time he was helping me pack and he was getting my socks and he started talking about how girls fold their socks and how boys fold their socks I had to stop him to tell him to shut up. I was the first to break the silence I told him he should of told me but he didn’t reply he said the only reason he didn’t tell me was because he knew me and that if I found out I would of been disappointed. I wouldn’t of though I would of been on his side. Last fall when Aidan and I were putting an
I woke hearing my mom’s annoying alarm. I sat up and rubbed my eyes. I see my mom get out of bed and walk into the bathroom. I see my softball uniform on the hotels counter. As I see my mom get out of the bathroom I stand up and grab my uniform. I walk in the bathroom and put on my blue jersey and belt, and my orange pants and socks . I put my brown chestnut hair in a high pony tail and walk out.
International surveys of student achievement are becoming increasingly popular with governments around the world, as they try to measure the performance of their country’s education system. The main reason for this trend is the shared opinion that countries will need to be able to compete in the ‘knowledge economy’ to assure the economic wellbeing of their citizens. Whilst benchmark indicators of knowledge economy ‘supply’ variables, such as investment in education as a proportion of GDP, have been available for a long time, countries had no way of comparing the effect of their investments and schooling in general upon students’ knowledge and skills. (Baird et al., 2011)
I am seeking to obtain a Masters in Business Analytics from California State University, East bay. My purpose to join this program has grown over the time. Since my school days, my favorite subjects were Mathematics and Science, which laid the foundation for my inclination towards engineering. I qualified various entrance examinations (including CEE with State Rank 111) and was placed in 0.1% of engineering aspirants. This helped me getting admission to Netaji Subhas Institute of Technology, which is one of the most prestigious institutions in India. My affinity towards programming languages, which I started studying at high school and the field of Computer Science, motivated me to take Computer Engineering as my major in undergraduate
