Because they control the minds of the masses.” said Malcolm X (Kulaszewics Pg 4). The representation of African Americans in media has been a major concern in American culture. One problem we see today in the media is equality. Research has found that African Americans in media have been frequently portrayed in stereotypical occupational roles with negative personality characteristics.
According to M. A Mughal, the media and its influence on the societies, has grown with the advance of technology. With these advancements, the impact from mass media has grown to not only impact our beliefs and values, but our assumptions as well (Kulaszewics Pg 4). The growing media has evolved racism, which is identified as a serious issue that can cause social disruption and panic in society. This can lead to hate-crimes such as murder or racial harassment. With a large amount of people utilizing the media, it has become an influence for the population of the United States. African Americans are not always seen in a positive light, they are usually seen in controversial and misrepresented images in the media. "Research on the portrayal of African Americans in prime-time television from 1955 to 1986 found that only 6 percent of the characters were African-Americans, while 89 percent of the TV population was white. Among these African-American characters, 19 percent lacked a high school diploma and 47 percent were low in economic status."
