I fell behind in Anatomy but adopted the philosophy of another day, another crisis. My new philosophy, combined with a good night's sleep before the exam, paid off. My score on the Histology quiz was 97 which was the highest grade in the class. Following the Histology quiz, I planned to go home and enjoy a relaxing weekend with Lori. As I cleaned out my mailbox prior to leaving Keystone for the weekend, I found a letter from the Anatomy Department. The letter requested my presence at the Anatomy tutorial sessions that were scheduled to begin on Monday. These hour-long sessions, which were scheduled for 7:00 A.M. each morning, were being offered to those students with scores under 70 on the first Anatomy exam. They were designed to reinforce …show more content…
The invitation to attend the sessions had deflated my ego and lowered my sense of self-esteem. I knew my performance on the first exam was due to circumstances beyond my control. I also knew I didn't need any tutoring. I wanted to forego the sessions but was worried not attending the tutorials might be misconstrued by the Anatomy Department. With little alternative, I decided to give the sessions a try, and see if my Anatomy grade could be improved by working nineteen hours a day instead of eighteen hours. With the late hours I had spent studying, getting to school for my 8:00 A.M. class had been difficult, but getting there for a 7:00 A.M. tutorial seemed above and beyond the call of duty. Nevertheless, on Monday morning, I joined thirty other students for the first tutorial. For some reason, I found it hard to walk into the classroom where the tutorial was being held. I wondered if all those years of trying to get into medical school hadn't caused the development of a deep-rooted sense of insecurity, and if my less than auspicious start hadn't caused the insecurity to surface. As I walked into the classroom and looked around, I could only wonder where Freud was when I needed …show more content…
Although I continued to burn the midnight oil, I was able to rest comfortably, knowing my studies were under control. When the test day finally rolled around, I was one of the few students who looked like they had slept in the week prior to the test. Having had a good night's rest, I was able to take the exam with a clear mind. After it was all over, I walked away from the exam with an 87, a grade that was 11 points above the class average. More importantly, I walked away from the exam with a new sense of confidence, and the knowledge any crisis could be averted by the application of a Polish proverb. During the week that followed the exam, quite a few students received invitations to attend the Anatomy tutorial sessions. One of the students was Ralph Kard. After his first tutorial session, Ralph had many of the same misgivings I had after my first session. He felt nervous watching Dr. Tower fondling his coffee mug, and was distracted by the many members of the Nod Squad who attended the sessions and the many minority students who
There are components of Northwestern’s curriculum that are well suited for my learning style and are ideal in terms of enhancing my clinical skills. For instance, the organ’s based approach and increasing levels of course
I had found out about this class through my high school. It was through to Mayo Clinic in Lake City. It was a two week course. My class happen to be the very first class that Mayo had held in Lake City. So it was a little disorganized. First day of class I was very nervous. I did not know what to expect in this class. When I showed up I only knew a couple of the other students. When I first met Melissa I thought she was going to be a very strict teacher. So I thought the class was not going to be very enjoyable. Every day we started our day by taking each other’s blood pressure, pulse and respirations. Counting someone’s pulse can be very tricky. She made us try with everyone because everyone is different. We would read one to two chapters a day in our text book. We would have a test for each chapter. We also had memorize vocabulary words and abbreviations. We had one big test on them at the end of the course that we had to pass in order to go on to take the test for the class. She would have us practice them every day.
bad on the final, but doing well on the assignments and projects allowed me to boost my grade.
I had the pleasure of meeting Kaylin this fall semester in my Anatomy and Physiology course. She is a high school student attending Wright State University to advance her education. She has successfully completed the first semester of a two-semester sequence in which she plans to finish the second part of the course next semester starting in January. Anatomy and physiology is a rigorous course and requires a great deal of face time in lecture and the lab. One attribute that has impressed me is that Kaylin is doing better than nearly 75% of her peers which are older and one would think better prepared.
Hello, Sheeneeka Freeman, I have had the pleasure of working with you in other classes here before. I look forward to working with you again this class. I hope we can both get a lot out of this course. If you don’t mind, I would like to hear more about how it is to be a Medical office specialist. I wish you luck on becoming a great medical assistant.
I was hopeful that the day would be a success. It was the same routine in a new environment. Fortunately, my first day at Larned High School started like every first day before. The principal, Mr. Langdon, gathered all the students and welcomed us into a new school year. His speech filled the room with excitement and optimism for the new year. After the ground rules were set we set forth for our first class. I would never have realized the challenges I would face in Biology. My instructor, Miss Moser, started off the year with a stern no-nonsense policy. Fear swept over the room. For the first two weeks, I did not dare speak, and I did not wish to cause any trouble. As long as I did not say anything I could not be wrong. To start the class, we began reviewing what the class should already know. It was difficult to figure out what I needed to know because she had such high expectations for the class. After the longest hour of my life, the class was finally over. I bolted
The nurse at times must review anatomy and physiology of body systems and landmarks. I had to review the body's anatomy and landmarks several times during this class and it was very helpful. I found the Shadow Health visual program a useful tool in my completion of this course. The program made me feel like I was actually in the room with the patient performing the assessments. It is a very good program and an asset to this course.
“We are going to look at some great examples of introductions and conclusions”, said my 8th grade English professor Mrs. Kelly. When I looked at the board, my last name was staring at me and I was staring back. My blood start to boil, and my face was as red as a tomato. My heart was beating as fast as a cheetah can run and in that moment, I felt that I was the center of attention. I looked at my teacher’s face and all the weird feelings disappeared in the blink of an eye. A smile was dancing around my face and hardly a word was spoken. This feeling was one of the best feelings in my life, but for others it might have been a normal feeling that they might experience every day. This feeling was meant to happen to me a long time ago, but no one knows what life can to someone who believes in
After crying and binge watching Grey’s Anatomy I told myself that nothing would be done if I just let myself drown in my self pity. I mean, Cristina Yang would never just give up. So I sent the form to retake my test and I studied my skills beginning to end, end to beginning until I basically ate, slept, and breathed clinical skills. The day before my test, I decided to really test how much I had learned from studying and stayed after school with my teachers. From them, I learned some tips and got some constructive criticism. But the best thing I was told was not to doubt myself. I thought she was just crazy. Lady, did you not see when I first took this test? Not doubting myself doesn’t work out too well for me. The day of the test, I was nervous throughout the drive to the Red Cross
I had arrived at my destination- a lot sooner than I wanted to. I hurried in the classroom to get the best seat, which was always in the back row by a window. The professor walked in with an energy that I had never encountered before. She carried herself with an air of confidence. She spoke with certainty. She introduced herself and dove right into the first lesson before the first five minutes of class were even over. She informed us that today we would be introducing ourselves to the entire class. I could feel myself becoming nauseous. My hands started shaking and my mind started sorting through a million cliché facts about myself. I could not seem to think of my favorite color at the moment. I am an average, boring, normal eighteen-year-old girl who has a crippling fear of public speaking. That is as far as I got before I heard the professor call my
I am very glad I took Ms. Finley’s class. I feel like I had a very strong connection with her and her class. I know I will be ok to continue in the medical field. I learned a lot in this class. I am very eager to learn more, and learn as much as I have to, to continue in this direction. I now know, leaving this class, I will have no regrets in farthing my education in the medical field, thank you Ms.
With the course of events of the first quarter, our Anatomy and Histology finals were anti-climactic. Everyone seemed to approach the exams with a new sense of confidence. As a result of the exams, I finished with a grade of 84 in Anatomy and 92 in Histology. The numbers were irrelevant because Keystone was on a Pass-Fail system in which only a "P" or "F" went on a student’s record for each course. Nevertheless, it felt good to be over the first
Moreover, the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences provides a unique teaching approach to students. Classrooms are executed using computers, recorded lectures, and the latest technology. The school recognizes what makes a successful medical student and effectively fills in the gaps between knowledge and
The time the student spends with the preceptor is minimal and determined by clinical requirements rather than the student’s individualized learning needs, therefore the preceptor need to identify the student’s learning needs in a timely manner and select patient visits/encounters to meet those needs can be difficult at times due to the time constraints.
One of the most amazing moments of that class was the chance that I had to visit a human anatomy lab at a local college. There college students showed us the cadavers they had been working on, allowing us to see the human body up close and personal. I saw the difference between a smoker’s lung and a non-smoker’s lung, exactly how a knee replacement works, and other insights to the human body.
