1.0 Introduction 1.1 Sun Zi’s Art of War Art of War is an ancient Chinese military treatise written by SunZi, also known as Master Sun, passed around for centuries, used by the richest and largest companies around the world. The book is written 2,500 years ago, an ancient treasure that can be access by anyone nowadays. What makes this text, created by the person that has the largest planet in the Solar System as his surname, so influential? SunZi took war as a chess game, created up to 13 chapters of ways to counter war opponents written on bamboo slats that created a significant impact on Chinese and Asian history. Sun Zi said: The conduct of war is a matter of vital importance to the nation. It decides the life and death of a country. It is a matter of life and death (of the people and their ruler). It must be experimented and read carefully. Thus, study and use the five factors cautiously. Compare them against (those of the enemy) so as to understand the changing style and threats (of war) and to gain the higher probability to win against your enemy. The five factors include moral influence, weather, terrain, generalship, and doctrine & law. The generalship of a commander refers to his qualities of wisdom, trustworthiness, benevolence, courage and discipline. As a leader, one must be willing to change for his followers, understanding the risks and returns, hence the way to reward your follower’s contribution and take care of them. A good generalship is required to plan a perfect attack or a perfect defense of an army. Without a good generalship, a commander will have high chance to lose a war even with outnumbered army. Doctrine and law refers to the overall organization and structure, the whole control of a unit, management systems and steps, and the command of the whole plan for the development of resources. Organizations have their own rules and regulations which applied through their culture and moral values.
