I began this academic journey at the start of the semester with the intention of finishing a bachelor’s degree and knocking out pre-requisite courses for veterinary school. The online program for a Bachelors in Health Sciences with the veterinary biomedical classes as an elective component seemed like a good fit. At the same time, I began to feel that I would like to make a difference in the lives of people that need it the most. While my priority is to finish a bachelor’s and I am still considering veterinary medicine, I am intrigued with the possibility of becoming a physician assistant and in working with penurious people as well as participating in medical missions.

Even though veterinarians and physician assistants work with different species, both career paths have several similar positive and negative aspects. One of the greatest resolves for me is the ability to practice medicine. The recompense of being able to examine patients, order and interpret diagnostics, diagnose and treat illnesses, prescribe medications, and perform surgeries is exciting, nevertheless, it will be extremely difficult to see neglect or abuse situations in either

Other things to keep in mind when applying for these physician assistant programs are things like the GRE and more importantly, the citizenship requirement that may intervene with my plans. Though I have a permit to legally reside and work in the United States, I am not considered a citizen or a permanent resident. This could be a big problem when applying because a requirement listed is that the applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Applicants should be citizens or permanent residents because insurance is required to participate in the clinical rotations. I believe this will be the most difficult part of my journey to becoming a PA but like all the other challenges I have faced due to my legal status, I will overcome it. I will use this personal issue in my favor by explaining that having to live with it has only made me more resilient and I would relate it back to their mission statements which all state that one of their priorities is to serve the underserved communities. Because of my status, I relate to these underserved communities because I

It is a nationally certified profession that requires you to take a board exam to be able to practice medicine. They are medical professionals who work as part of a team with a medical doctor. I changed my major a few times until I finally decided to become a physician assistant also known as a PA. It started when I realized i have a passion for medicine. About 6 months ago I broke my hand and during the rehabilitation period I was inspired by my orthopedic physician. I had originally wanted to become an Orthopedic surgeon but as time when on i started being a little bit more realistic. School has never been my strong suit. An orthopedic surgeon has to go through 4 years of college, 4 years of med school and another 5 years of clinicals. Thats a lot of time in school for someone who doesn’t like being there in the first place. Most people think becoming a PA takes just as long but surprisingly it only takes about 2 years.
The physician assistant (PA) profession has grown exponentially and as a consequence more people are becoming familiar with the profession. The profession has grown in the United States from 80,019 certified PAs in 2010 to 115,547 certified PAs in 2016 which is an increase of 44.4% over the past 6 years.1 Furthermore, in the United States there are 36 PAs per 100,000 population.1(p6) PAs are found in all 50 states and the average salary among all certified PAs in all specialties is $104,131 making the profession ranked number 3 out of 100 best jobs.1(p11,21) Therefore, the PA profession is becoming more popular and demanding which makes for a competitive environment when applying to a PA graduate program.
