For the black man, the average walk down the street is a game of chance. Will his tall and dark figure spark controversy? Will people see him and immediately move in the opposite direction? Will women clutch their purses the same as officers clutching their hoisters because this black man is immediately seen as a threat before he’s seen as human? The black male teenager has been demonized in today’s society; media outlets, such as news stations, TV, and movies, constantly paint black men as violent, dangerous thugs.1 These negative connotations and stereotypes have real life consequences, for black male teens are subjected to scrutiny and categorized into negative classifications throughout society.
TV viewers are fed violent black male stereotypes with a rusty spoon; these stereotypes can be found on crime shows like The Wire, and Law and Order. If there was a crime, the perpetrator was usually a black man. The constant broadcasting of black men as criminals subliminally instills the idea that black men are only criminals. Many news sources broadcast these situations and omit certain details or in a way paint the victim as a violent criminal. Travyon Martin, Tamir Rice and countless others have been used to push the agenda that black boys are aggressors. The increased number of cases involving a black person subjected to police brutality is truly taking a toll on black teens in America. According to this graph, 68% of black Americans felt stress over police violence towards minorities (Harris Poll, 2017). In 2017, the percentage jumped up to 71%. The increase of police violence towards minorities has black people more fearful every time they step out of their home.
