Bennett’s controversial tone presents a real-life, innocent situation for people of colour using a character fearing for his life and a nonchalant police car. Explicitly, this political cartoon depicts a police car passing by a park, with three different types of people on the sidewalk, by a bus stop. On the bench, we have a white woman and a white man standing by her, reading the paper. The third person is a black male, with his hands up. Implicitly, the black man has his arms up as a sign of surrender, even though the situation is innocent. This cartoon depicts today’s issues with the trend/movement, #BlackLivesMatter. This image implies that black people are being killed/harmed/detained by the people that are supposed to be protecting them, for not doing anything, or doing something minor. The cartoonist wants to correct the stereotype and preconceived bias against black people/people of colour by ridiculing these situations. The satiric victim is the police officer/police car. Without the use of dialogue or a title, you can clearly see that the issue being addressed is police brutality against people of colour violence, and the sad fact that they are in constant fear for their lives. The cartoonist’s position is on the side of the person of colour; he conveys this visually by drawing the physical characteristics of fear. Visually, the ethos appeal stirs emotions of justice, while the pathos appeal allows readers to empathize with the person of colour. On the other hand, the cartoonist creates antipathy to the police, or the opposing position.
