The book I read this quarter was Playground by 50 Cent (Curtis James Jackson III) with the help of Laura Moser. Butterball the main character is an overweight outcast who moved to Garden City Road Island because his parents became divorced and he went with his mother. Butterball beats up another kid and is forced to go to a therapist for his anger issues. With the violence that he caused the other kids respect him. His father also supports his outburst and even makes him steal a pair of expensive shoes. His mother is always working and although she wants to help Butterball he doesn't want it. Butterball learns that another boy is going to a birthday party and that he will try to hit on a girl, called Nia, that he likes and so he attempts to fight him because he thinks he’ll get respect. When at the party he gets beat up by the boy and his friends. Disgraced by his failure he works with his therapist to change himself into a better person. He continued to work hard on his filming hobby and realized that his mother wanted to help him and that his dad would bring him down. He gave up bullying and became a better person for the rest of Highschool. …show more content…
After the incident of Butterball beating up a kid the girl he liked didn’t really see it as something good and this hurt his relationship with her. “Nia kept her eyes firmly fixed on the asphalt under out feet,”(Jackson 57). This quote showed even when Butterball was talking to her she didn’t want to look at him at this moment. While at the party Butterball attempts to beat up Terrence the guy who was hitting on Nia but when Butterball attempted to hit him with a sock full of D batteries he missed and he and his friends beat him into submission. While Butterball left injured he thought to himself, “Not like anyone ever came back to check on me,”(Jackson 194). Not even one person came to check on him, not Nia, or school acquaintance Andres that told him about
As I was growing up, my parents always wanted to find something to help me be active with other children. I was extremely shy and would not talk to anyone. At the age of six, I chose to try out for softball, but I was not sure if it was something I would continue to play. Softball has helped me break out of my comfort zone and talk to people, make lifelong friends, and be stronger as an individual. The older I got, the more open I was, but my first year of JV is what broke my shell.
One Fat Summer by Robert Lipsyte, is a very good book for teenagers that feel insecure about themselves and have low self-esteem. In the book they will read about a young boy name, Bobby who overcomes his fears of being fat and being bullied by Willie, one that is much stronger then him physically, but not emotionally. The basic theme of this story is to stand up for yourself no matter the situation.
Center field by Robert Lipsyte was an extraordinary book about Mike Semak is basically home alone. His parents, coming home only on occasion, fret over every detail of his high school career while spending all their time at their new flooring store. A passing altercation in a hallway with another student draws threats of lawsuits and criminal charges. Mike’s baseball team, and much of his school, Ridgedale High, is run by Coach Cody, a mysterious former Army Ranger hired as “dean of discipline” because “there had been gang violence and drug dealing in nearby New Jersey towns. The school board was afraid it would spread to Ridgedale.”
I heard the Mavericks ball kid team is the best in the NBA, and I would like to be apart of that team. Being a ball kid would be amazing, incredible, and a fascinating person to be! Especially since we get to serve the fans and assist the Mavericks staff! There are many reasons why I would like to become a ball kid and qualities I possess that would make me a good one!
The book I'm writing about is called Stupid Fast. It's about a teenage boy who learns that he has became bigger then he feels. The people who he used to make fun of have now become his friends. He tries to understand why his family is so crazy. Then in the end he gets told about who his dad really was and everything starts to make more sense.
From 1940-1970, New York’s transformation into an Afro-Cuban cradle reveals the complexity of the melting pot concept of integrating Hispanic Caribbean people’s culture and lifestyle in a foreign place. The social culture of the South Bronx lends itself to the manifestation of Afro-Cuban music and dance cultures. With adolescents, playing stickball and gathering at the jukebox served as a gateway to music. As Benny Bonilla says, “Practically everyone I know in the music business, I met him in the schoolyard. And stickball was what really got me into music” (Bonilla 4:17).
“Slow down silly goose!” I say these words to you as you run through the parking lot towards the baseball field. Slow down. It seems like just yesterday when you were taking your first steps. I remember how your eyes brightened and you shined your three shiny teeth when you realized you could let go of Mommy’s hand. I keep replaying that moment in my head as you slow down and grab my hand, so I can walk you to the dugout. This is your very first t-ball game and you couldn’t be more excited. However, I am a nervous wreck. You are only four! You are not ready! Your helmet is too big and you tend to play in the dirt instead of paying attention to the flying ball. I just keep thinking about how much it would hurt if you got hit with that
The object of softball is to score runs by hitting the ball and touching all the bases without being tagged or thrown out. Softball games last for seven innings. The pitcher will pitch to a batter until one of four things happens: The batter gets three strikes against him/her. A strike occurs when the batter swings at a pitch but misses it or hits it foul with less than two strikes against him/her, or when the pitch passes through the strike zone but the batter does not swing at it. The pitcher throws four "balls," which are pitches that fail to pass through the strike zone and which are not swung at by the batter. In this case the batter "walks," meaning he or she is awarded first base. The pitcher hits the batter with a pitch. In this case,
This book is called Forged by Fire, by Sharon M. Drapper. In the book Gerald has to grow up with many challenges. The book takes place in the Hazelwood area. Gerald is a three year old boy who lives with his single mom. Gerald's mom is a major drug addict, she doesn't really take good care of Gerald. If he were to have a “accident”, she would make him keep it in his pants or not change him till the end of the day as a lesson to him. Gerald has many problems to deal with in this book, but the main one is having to deal with Jordan, his mom's husband who abuses all 3 of them, Monique (mom), Gerald, and Angel (sister). But worst of all Gerald has to deal with the fact that Jordan is sexually abusing Angel.
If former Washington congressman Joel Pritchard had a dog with a more conventional name, millions of people across the country would be playing a game with a different name.
Softball is a sport that is known throughout the United States and the world. Softball originated on Thanksgiving Day in Chicago in 1887. The game was actually said to have begun as an indoor game. Softball was started by a group of men who had gathered at a club to watch the Harvard vs. Yale football game. When the news came that Yale had defeated Harvard, 17-8, one Yale supporter, overcome with enthusiasm, picked up an old boxing glove and threw it at a nearby Harvard alumni, who promptly tried to hit it back with a stick. This gave George Hancock, a reporter for the Chicago Board of Trade, an idea. He suggested a game of indoor baseball. Naturally, Hancock's friends thought he was talking about playing a game outdoors, not indoors.
Softball is a growing sport for girls within the United States. Whether you are an 8-year-old girl, to a senior in college softball, it’s a sport that many are attached too. A new form of hitting came into play during the 2005 Women’s College Series. Slap hitting is a new form of hitting that changed the way the game of fast-pitch softball is being played. Slapping changed the way coaches and players think about how they are going to field a slap hitter. This form of hitting is becoming a major role within fast-pitch softball. When I got the opportunity to learn how to slap hit I was excited to gain this ability. With practice, patience and determination, I began to learn the hitting style that I use today.
Have you ever tried to bake peanut butter cookies, and for some reason they were a complete flap because they were dry and crunchy, too moist and crumbly, or perhaps they had a terrible taste? Well, I have discovered this cool new recipe and I have never failed at making them. Have no fear, the ultimate peanut butter cookie recipe is here.
The varsity baseball team had just finished a long day of practicing base running, hitting and fielding. It was very hot out and the sun was making us even more tired. Sweat soaked my shirt and dripped off the brim of my hat. I had been up since 6:30, spent all day at school, and practiced baseball for 2 hours. I was so exhausted that I just wanted to go home, take a shower and go to bed. Then my coach called me over and said “Hey Kevin can you help me with the field?”, The last thing I wanted to do was stay after practice to hose down the field and fix the hole in the pitcher's mound.
One of the most exciting things that I have done in my life is the sport of paintballing in which I played professionally in my home country of Kuwait. Paintballing is like a game of tag in which two teams of six people face each other in an arena with inflatable cover. The objective of the game is to tag out as many people as you can with your paintball gun that has paintballs that explode on impact. In paintballing there is woodstyle, speedball and scenario which varies in whatever arena or location that you are playing in. To me this is the closest that anyone can get to a combat scenario and the feeling that I get from playing the sport gets my heart racing every time making me very excited and happy when I go out with my team to play.
