Competition cheerleading is a very competitive sport, although regular cheerleading isn’t a sport at all. Many people argue the answer to this question a lot; yet the people that argue towards the yes side give reasons that support competition cheer.
Cheerleading isn’t a sport for many reasons, one being that the activity doesn’t require any skill. Regular, non-sport cheerleading doesn’t have any specific skills that make it a sport, yes some cheerleaders can do certain skills but those aren’t required for activity. For competitive cheerleading you are required for certain skills, a lot of those skills increase the amount of physical exertion just like sports.
Another great example on why cheerleading isn’t a sport is because sports require competition and cheerleading does not have that. In cheerleading your job is to entertain and cheer on the team/game (sport) that is playing, you don’t compete with anyone in cheerleading. There may be other cheerleaders but you aren’t competing for anything like an actual sport. In sports the objective is to win something, compete for something, but cheer doesn’t have that. In cheer you stand on the sidelines yelling words while moving your body, everyone can do that! Yes in cheerleading you need to memorize the words but that doesn’t require much, it isn’t even a strategy. In competition cheer you have a strategy on how you’re going to win, how you’re going to get first place.
Cheerleading is a not a sport, it’s an extra curricular just like band, school clubs, etc. If any type or sort of cheerleading is a sport it’s competition cheer. Other than competition cheerleading regular sideline cheer is not a sport and there is plenty of good and reasonable evidence to support this
