Chicago has a crime problem. The city experiences crime far too much and at too high an intensity. According to the FBI Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report, Chicago experienced 14,007 violent crimes from January through June in 2017 out of a population of 2,725,153; whereas Los Angelos and New York--the only two cities more populous than Chicago in the United States--experienced 14,440 and 22,369 violent crimes out of populations of 4,007,905 and 8,566,917 respectively (“2017 Preliminary…”). Chicago experiences crimes unproportional to its size--it experienced over half as much crime as New York experienced while having just under a quarter of its population.
Furthermore, Chicago has had a problem for a long time. The city has had rising crime rates since the 1960s, correlating to the rise in gangs (“Gangs”). The 1980s and 1990s saw the introduction of …show more content…

Specific areas contribute to the majority of the city’s crime. For example, Irving Park has a homicide rate of 5 in 100,000 while West Garfield Park suffers from 64 in 100,000 (Christensen). These neighborhoods that experience the worst of Chicago’s crime are also the most gang-infested, least employed, and disinvested areas. By dealing with these neighborhoods and their problems, Chicago’s crime issue can also be handled.
Chicago’s crime is a multifaceted issue. Some say guns are the problem while others say the city fails to keep criminals off the street. These are valid arguments; Chicago murders are largely gun homicides, and recidivism is a major issue. Over 80 percent of the homicides are gun-related in Chicago (Kapustin et al.). Illinois has a 45 percent recidivism rate (Jackson-Green). However, these problems share a root: the communities in which these criminals come out of, as well as the ones that are affected the most by crime.
