Chicago has a crime problem. The city experiences crime far too much and at too high an intensity. According to the FBI Preliminary Semiannual Uniform Crime Report, Chicago experienced 14,007 violent crimes from January through June in 2017 out of a population of 2,725,153; whereas Los Angelos and New York--the only two cities more populous than Chicago in the United States--experienced 14,440 and 22,369 violent crimes out of populations of 4,007,905 and 8,566,917 respectively (“2017 Preliminary…”). Chicago experiences crimes unproportional to its size--it experienced over half as much crime as New York experienced while having just under a quarter of its population.
Furthermore, Chicago has had a problem for a long time. The city has had rising crime rates since the 1960s, correlating to the rise in gangs (“Gangs”). The 1980s and 1990s saw the introduction of

Specific areas contribute to the majority of the city’s crime. For example, Irving Park has a homicide rate of 5 in 100,000 while West Garfield Park suffers from 64 in 100,000 (Christensen). These neighborhoods that experience the worst of Chicago’s crime are also the most gang-infested, least employed, and disinvested areas. By dealing with these neighborhoods and their problems, Chicago’s crime issue can also be handled.
Chicago’s crime is a multifaceted issue. Some say guns are the problem while others say the city fails to keep criminals off the street. These are valid arguments; Chicago murders are largely gun homicides, and recidivism is a major issue. Over 80 percent of the homicides are gun-related in Chicago (Kapustin et al.). Illinois has a 45 percent recidivism rate (Jackson-Green). However, these problems share a root: the communities in which these criminals come out of, as well as the ones that are affected the most by crime. By addressing what lies at the core of these issues, the crime rates can be
This paper deals with gang violence in the city of Chicago since the beginning of time. It takes a deep look into the history of Chicago gangs and how they interact today. Also the past problems the City of Chicago made when dealing with gangs and the problems that gangs today have and how Chicago has the worst gang problem in the country. Also how gangs have turned themselves into big, and lucrative enterprises most known for money. Also stated are possible solutions to stop or reduce violence of the gangs that all start off with teaching the young kids about gangs and gang prevention.
Chicago has been gaining a reputation as of late for being a very dangerous place to live. “Chicago police records recorded 506 murders in 2012, with an estimated 80 percent being gang related” (NBA). “In 2012, the city of Chicago alone recorded over 506 dead which was twice as many as New York, and 200 more than Los Angeles” (Tu). Englewood, which has the highest homicide rates in the city show poverty may be the underlining factor. The neighborhood of Englewood has a population of 30,654, and 42.2 percent of them are below poverty level (Tu). It goes to show the correlation between poverty and crime; crime is indeed a distinct reflection of crime.
Chicago has the highest gang population in the United States (www.huffingtonpost.com) and the highest amount of gun related murders to boot. As an effect of these crimes, many of the targets are not the rich and the powerful but instead are the weak and the poor. Those that cannot defend themselves to a great extent, they are seen as easy targets that will soon give up if it has taken too long to find the culprits. Since the underclass is the primary target for crime from the underclass it is like they are just undermining themselves in order to gain some type or upper hand on the next man that holds no real bearing. Even when taking “good moral” individuals some have turned to crime because they see no other way to make means for themselves or their loved ones. Some of these people have been laid off and have no other source of income, their back is against a wall and they want out. They want so badly to have money again so that they survive and not live on the streets like they see others, so they commit crimes for others that will pay. It is because of this desperation that violent crimes still thrive and until people realize this then violent crime will still keep the underclass suppressed. (www.clombia.edu)
A special report made by Chicago Magazine, “The Truth About Chicago’s Crime Rates”, informs about the way authorities in the city had in recent year reclassify crime rates through the manipulation of statistics. The article investigates specific cases of murders that occurred in Chicago’s South and West side neighborhoods. In July 2013, Tiara Groove, a 20-year old black African American from South Austin, was found dead inside a warehouse, “Her face and body were bloated and badly decomposed”, and a thin and brown wire “was wrapped around each armrest of a wooden chair next to her flesh”. Despite the pathologist not been able to find the exact cause of the death, it was indicated that it had been a homicide; but, the CPD did not counted as a murder and classified the case as “noncriminal death investigation”. This would be the onset of other similar cases that were investigated by the Chicago Magazine’s
The reason why I say this is because one of the key things I feel that makes Chicago so violent, is because most children and teenager’s brains are not taught well that violence is not the way out to whatever situation they have going on in their lives. According to United States Department of Justice, Facts about Children and Violence, “Children exposed to violence are also at a higher risk of engaging in criminal behavior later in life becoming part of a cycle of violence.” Whatever they have experienced or been taught is how they will react to any situation which may just be violence or drugs and alcohol. That is why the murder rate from teenagers is so high because they feel the beats and lyrics in some of the music that they listen to and react how certain artists portray themselves and others in their songs. They probably feel as though this gives them the power to do anything they want to do far as killing people or selling drugs, much more because a lot of music artists today only talks about violence in their songs. While talking to children and a few camp counselor I learned that children feel intimidated when adults see them and don’t speak so one of the things adults can do to stand up to help the environment is to engage more with one another and children to make the kids feel safe rather than on edge which can lead to
The Short North Posse terrorized the Wienland Park neighborhood since the early 1990’s. The north side gang became so entrenched in violence, local police and prosecutors teamed up with the Federal Bureau of Investigation an issued the largest federal murder indictment in history in the state of Ohio. The Columbus Dispatch reported that in 2014, “Law enforcement around central Ohio, collaborated with the FBI on a two-year investigation that lead to a twenty-five count indictment that included 11 murder charges.” A person could possibly entertain the idea that since the gang members were indicted and brought to justice, the system is running a course and the problem is under control. Nevertheless, the majority of sensible people might successfully flirt with the notion that if Columbus had a well-established anti-gang program throughout the community, these nine men and two women would have never lost their lives to senselessness. Gangs such as the Short North Posse, that often referred themselves as the “Cut Throat Committee” could have possibly been avoided if the city took an earlier initiative to curb the rise in gang activity by applying awareness programs and interventions.
There are hundreds of gangs all over Chicago. These gangs are reckless and try to show their superiority by shooting rival gang members. When committing such acts, these gang members fail to realize that they aren’t the only ones who live in this city. There are
But the highest crime rates were taking place inside the city of Chicago. What they also noticed is that the building structures were significantly different in the higher crime rated areas than the lower crime rated areas. Because the city was going through a change, crime was more prominent to happen in their neighborhoods. So, because of the change, it caused the areas to be socially disorganized. Juvenile delinquency crime in the neighborhood of Chicago caused plenty of disrupting and anger amongst the community.
The correlation between gangs and drugs has always been an issue for the United States government. Major cities often overlooked the problem of youth gang violence, thinking it was only a 1960’s trend. Sixty years later, gangs and drugs continue to be a problem, but in an increasing number within urban, suburban and rural areas in the United States. People may characterize this problem with words such as violence, increase drug activity, and delinquencies, but not many seem to see the bigger picture. Lack of interaction, collaboration, and strategies from law enforcement, youth centers, businesses, churches, and political icons are increasing gang violence and drug related offenses in major cities. In such cities as Chicago, minority groups are the most vulnerable to joining a gang, which then leads to an involvement with drugs; they are faced with barriers – lack of family support, poverty, segregation, unemployment, etc. An incident that happened in Chicago history is the closing of the Cabrini-Green Project, where people involved with gangs had to find a new home, scattering gang-members throughout the city, and eventually leading to their spread and growth.
Chief of Police Sam Dotson attributed much of this improvement to the police department’s hot-spot policing strategy. Both hot spot policing and focused deterrence policing have been proven effective in other large cities and the next step is implementing these programs into Chicago’s Police Force. (LAW
Crime is something that happens every day. Many people fear it, but it is a factor that people cannot escape. In places, like Detroit, people are surrounded by violent crime. Either they are the victims of it, or the committers, but it was not always like this. During the sixties, Detroit was one of the most lucrative cities in the country. Many people moved there to seek jobs in the automotive factories which increased the population to 1.85 million. (Padnani, 2013) However, this is not the case now. Many of the factories have moved, putting people and their families at a disadvantage. A numerous amount of workers relied on these jobs to feed their families. Since then, Detroit has faced a significant amount of hardships that has caused the city to deteriorate effecting education, employment, and the crime rate each factor acts as a chain reaction. The lack of diversity in the city can be a factor of the crime rate as well because Detroit is filled with a large population of minorities. Many politicians have looked for ways to solve the problem, but nothing has been proven to work.
Over the past three years Chicago violent has kept at a steady rate causing terror and for a generation to lose hope. According to the 2013 FBI Crime Report; someone is shot in Chicago every three hours and 16 minutes, an individual dies from a gunshot every 18 hours. The black on back crime rate is about 90%. In 2014 the FBI Crime Report, reported that even though Chicago’s population is one fourth of the size of New York, it has nearly five times the homicides. This year Chicago crime has taken a turn for the worst, with a devastating murder that was truly shocked the nation and was a first for its kind. Tyshawn Lee was a 9-year-old boy who was lured into an alley and shot execution style, as retaliation for his father’s gang affiliation.
The geography, gangs, and guns greatly contribute to the increasing crime rate in Chicago. Chicago’s geography is a centralized location which makes it a hub for guns and drug trades. Studies prove that gangs are located everywhere, allowing them to have unlimited access to drugs and guns. Since gangs are located just about everywhere it is hard for children to avoid the peer pressure of gang members. Typically, gangs are located in Chicago’s streets, street corners, business or residence districts, lake shore, railroads, and gullies.
The crimes in Milwaukee are becoming a big thing for everyone and it’s putting Milwaukee higher and higher in the ranks of the most dangerous cities of America... The occasional crime has occurred in Milwaukee and in every city around the world but lately the crime in Milwaukee has been getting out of control and it’s beginning to become a very unsafe place for everyone. The probability of being a victim in a violent crime is 1 in 16. That’s not good and we can definitely improve this and make Milwaukee once again a better place. The most problematic areas in Milwaukee are the North and East sides. These issues are affecting everyone living in these areas, not only mentally as they’re so afraid that something will happen to them but also physically as so many innocent residents have been shot and killed or were put in very critical conditions from gunshot wounds. This is primarily due to stray bullets hitting them or being in the wrong place at the wrong time when a dispute is
Chicago, Illinois, is one of the most dangerous cities in the world, and is one of the most dangerous city in America. Crime rate in Chicago is spread over murder, rape, assault, robbery, and many other heinous crimes. The city does not know where to turn next, as their rates keep spiraling out of control. Fatal crime in Chicago is higher than almost anywhere else in the United States, and that's what needs to be controlled. Chicago is one of the most dangerous cities in America and that can be supported because of its significant crime rate.
