I chose to write about Children in Foster care getting swift
Permanency. due to the fact I have fostered 35 children over a span of 8 years. The hardest thing you could ever do is wake up in the middle of the night, rush to the hospital and pick up a wounded child. Whether physically or mentally, broken is broken. Imagine spending 6 months to 3 years tending to the deep wounds of this sweet broken child. Spending night after night holding them as they have night terrors, screaming in fear for the hell they have been through. Only to have the system decide after 12+ months the bio parents have met the minimum standards for 30-60 days so they give the child back and set them up for complete failure. Imagine if you were left to wonder each day if you would wake up tomorrow in the same home. Will your caseworker once again, come like a thief in the night swoop in and steal you from your newest version of life? The average length of stay in foster care is 23.9 months.
Could you imagine not knowing what tomorrow would bring for
23.9 months, not knowing if you were going to stay or go, whether these strangers we’re going to be your new mommy and daddy or not. Imagine wavering through life not knowing if your parents care, not knowing if the people you are left with will be safe or keep you safe. Your life is completely out of your control.
The system continues to fail children each and every day, there are cases upon cases of children who have lingered in care for upwards of 60+ months. Everyday there are thousands of children aging out of foster care. They have no resources, no family, and no support system in place. Last year 22,000 children aged out of the system. They were too old or too troubled to be adopted. Within four years after aging out, 25% have become homeless, less than half
