“While the Revolution of 1776-1783 created the United States, the Civil War of 1861-1865 determined what kind of nation it would be” (McPherson). Four years of American bloodshed on American soil for a wide-range of reasons. From the formation of America to 1860, the people in this country were divided. This was a result of location and personal opinions. Peace could not continue in a country filled with disagreements that affected the common American. Many believe that The American Civil War was fought only over slavery, when in fact there were a number of other reasons for why this war was fought. The War of the Rebellion, as it is officially known, was fought between the American people, the northern states (the Union) versus the southern states (the Confederates), to ultimately determine the survival of the Union or independence for the Confederacy. Throughout the war, the Union had recruited an estimated 1.5 million troops and the Confederates recruited an approximate 1.2 million. Other issues that arose were sectionalism, referring to the different economies, social structure, customs and political values of the North and South (Charles S. Sydnor, The Development of Southern Sectionalism). Protectionism, the theory or practice of shielding a country's domestic industries from foreign competition by taxing imports. “Northern states, which had heavily invested in their still-nascent manufacturing, could not compete with the full-fledged industries of Europe in offering high prices for cotton imported from the South and low prices for manufactured exports in return. Thus, northern manufacturing interests supported tariffs and protectionism while southern planters demanded free trade” (Thornton & Ekelund 2004, p.
The name Civil War is misleading because the war was not a class struggle, but a sectional combat, having its roots in political, economic, social, and psychological elements. It has been characterized, in the words of William H. Seward, as the “irrepressible conflict.” In another judgment the Civil War was viewed as criminally stupid, an unnecessary bloodletting brought on by arrogant extremists and blundering politicians. Both views accept the fact that in 1861 there existed a situation that, rightly or wrongly, had come to be regarded as insoluble by peaceful means.
The American Civil War is the bloodiest battle in history. This war was fought between the North and the South. Ever since the Missouri Compromise of 1820 that’s when the America was divided between the North and the South. The North being free states, which means no slavery. The South being slave starts, which means slavery.
The Civil War was the most mortifying clash in the history of america. Approximately six hundred and forty thousand americans were killed in action during the battle between the union and the confederacy. Another reason why we went to war with ourselves was because we did not want the south to part ways with the north. The Civil War lasted up to four years until the union defeated the confederacy.
In 1861, a Civil War broke out between the Union States and Confederate States of America. Many influences led to this battle, but there were 3 main disagreements that initiated the Civil War. The debate in the North and South about slavery’s cruelty and ethicality was a primary cause of the war. Another main cause was the fairness of the decision of the state’s rights and the fairness of the rights that the states had. In addition to the other 2 controversies, the allowing and wanting for states to disjoin the Union was another cause.
The United States faced many economic differences between the north and south. The north was the most successful mainly because it had a commercial/industrial economy. The north’s value of manufacturing is very high compared to the south (Doc. 1a). They supported tariffs, in fact they "voted the President additional powers to enforce collection of the revenues" (Doc.6). Significant investments for internal improvements
For four years, Americans fought against one another on the battlefield. This war would come to make up the bloodiest war in American history. Over the four years, over 620,000 soldiers died in the conflict. This war became one the most traumatic event in American History. Since the beginning of colonization to the 1860’s, the people in this country were slowly being divided. From 1850 to 1861, it was apparent that the union was separating into the North and the South and battle was soon to follow. With this division, peace could not continue amongst the country, for the country was filled with problems that affected the common Americans. With the events that led up to the war, the South felt like they had every reason to secede from the
The years of 1861 through 1865 are known as the Civil War. This was a time of bloodshed, broken families, and a torn nation. The United States of America had become the depressing picture of a war and politically torn nation. The number question whenever we as humans arrive to a bad scenario is, “How did I end up here?”. The causes of the Civil War were all based off of two different economic and political ideas, the acts made by the government concerning the differences, and morals.
The difference between the North and South’s economy varied greatly. The South had a mainly agricultural economy while the North mainly focused on an industrial economy. It can be seen on the pi charts of the North and South’s economy that the North was more prosperous with their economy do to that fact that one and a half trillion dollars of manufactured goods were produced in the North while only one hundred fifty-five million dollars were produced in the South (Doc 2). The South made most of their money from crops but most importantly cotton. South was the top producer in cotton and it was a very popular crop to buy. The difference in economy between the North and South took a toll on the relationship between them. The difference in economies was a tension that was one event that led to the civil
The Civil War was a conflict that helped shape America to become the country it is today. Though its foundation and origination are debated, historians agree that it was deadlier for Americans than the American Revolution, World War I, World War II, and Vietnam War. The North and South differed in many aspects, slavery being the most controversial. The South’s persistency and “free-labor” ideology, contrasted with the North’s attempts to stop its spread into their own region. Such mass destruction and casualties derived from conflicting issues that only grew as time went on, and with no room for compromises, war was irrepressible.
The little children are freezing to death. My people, some of them, have run away to the hills, and have no blankets, no food. No one knows where they are -- perhaps freezing to death. I want to have time to look for my children, and see how many of them I can find. Maybe I shall find them among the dead. Hear me, my chiefs! I am tired. My heart is sick and sad. From where the sun now stands I will fight no more forever."
Many people think the civil war of 1860-1865 was fought over one issue “Slavery”. But that is furthest from the truth why we fought the civil war. During the 1850’s to early 1860’s the united states had many issues. And slavery was among one of those issues but the united states government had many issues as well. During the civil war 620,000 soldiers were killed the highest death rate than any other war in U.S History. The northern armies won the civil war as the southern states went back and returned to the union. But the united states government was was renewed and reborn and was basically started over.
America has fought in numerous wars, two world wars even, but the deadliest one was the war against itself. America’s first and only civil war was a brutal campaign of Americans versus Americans, brothers versus brothers, and resulted in over 600,000 deaths (White). Looking past at America’s history this war was seemingly inevitable. Some say the start of the civil war was when Confederate troops attacked Union soldiers at Fort Sumter. While this officially started the war, what is more important are the events causing the tension that lead up to this breaking point. One reason for the civil war was because the North and the South had strikingly different cultures, cultures that clashed against each other. The North was a more liberal, abolitionist, industrial culture while the south was a conservative agrarian based area. The second reason for the outbreak of civil war was due to the increasing political tension within the union. Southern states who feared the removal of slavery threatened to secede if the republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln. was elected. Although there were many events that contributed to the civil war, the differing cultures of the North and South, and the political tension between the North and the South, were the two main events that caused the deadliest conflict in American history.
In the Civil War the North had many advantages over the South. The South was outnumbered, out supplied, and pushed into a corner using military tactics. Many things changed because of the Civil War. The military tactics used by the North changed how war was fought from then on. Many changes were made politically; some were only temporary, while others were permanent. After the war was over, the country was reunited and the image of the soul and duty of our country redefined.
America has been a country divided between the North and South since its creation in 1776. For over 70 years, the conflict slowly built up until tensions became overwhelming. The nation’s leaders tried to ease the strained relationship with various compromises and acts, but they could not fully satisfy either group. As a result, the United States entered into a deadly domestic war that lasted from 1861 to 1865 and claimed more than 600,000 lives. The American Civil War was fought because of political, economical, and social differences between the North and the South.
In 1861, the American Civil War commenced after many years of tension building between the Northern and Southern states. The main reason of the tension was said to be the debate of slavery between the North and South, and although some documents support this claim, it is false. The war had been brewing since 1607, before slavery was even introduced to the colonies that would become the United States of America. The debate of slavery did play a major part in the civil war; however it did so in supporting the true cause of the civil war. The main cause of the American Civil War was not the debate of slavery, but rather Europe’s role in the American economy.
