The Corydoras catfish is a member of the family Callichthyidae. They are from the genus Corydoras. There are several different species of Corydoras. They all share similar traits such as body size, shape and behavioral habits. The distinguishing feature between the various species is their color palette, some of which are quite striking.
Catfish are bottom dwelling scavengers. Scavenger fish generally have two traits in common. Their mouths are usually pointed downward. And the mouth has barbels on either side. A barbell is a tentacle-like organ that contains taste buds. They are used to find food and to feel their way around on riverbed floors in the wild. The Corydoras catfish has two barbells, one on either side of its mouth.

The Corydoras is part of the Anabantoidei suborder. This means that although they do have gills, they require both atmospheric and dissolved oxygen in order to survive. Anabantoids or labyrinth fishes have a lung-like organ that allows them to consume airborne oxygen. The Corydoras catfish will frequently rise to the surface of the water to gulp in needed air.
The Corydoras catfish is a relatively small freshwater fish. When fully grown, they only reach a size of between two to three inches. The dwarf corydoras or Corydoras pygmaeus is even smaller, reaching only about one inch in length.
Corydoras catfish make great additions to community fish tanks. They have a docile temperament. And they do a great job of cleaning up food particles from aquarium substrate to help in the prevention of harmful bacteriological build up.
Although Corydoras are primarily bottom dwellers, they are shoaling fish. They tend to congregate together in aquariums. They even search for food and rest together. It is not at all uncommon to see one catfish resting his head on the body of another catfish. The catfish do not necessarily even have to be the same species as long as they are of the genus Corydoras. Because of their social nature, you should add at least two or three to your tank. Corydoras are not meant to live a solitary
Description – The Atlantic croaker is a fish, usually about 12 inches long, that weighs anywhere from ½ pound, to 2 pounds on average. Its distinguishing characteristics include three to five pairs of small barbels or "whiskers" on their chins to help them feel for food on the sea
A well-known feature of the catfish is the barbels that are present around their mouths. The presence of these barbels reduced the maxilla in catfish so they cannot protrude their mouth like other fish. These barbels are often referred to as barbs and serve as sensory organs because they house the taste buds of the catfish and are used to search for food in dark or swampy water. These barbs may also be called whiskers and it is because of this similarity that they are called catfish. Catfish may have a maximum of four pairs of barbs depending on the species, but they always come in pairs. These barbels, though they may look dangerous, are usually harmless. However, some species of catfish have similar-looking methods of
Phenotypes pertaining to fins, fin length, and color were observed. Only a few phenotypes, such as fin length and presence of specific fluorescent proteins, were decided on to be important in understanding the genetics (Biology 2202 Genetics Laboratory Handout, University of Minnesota - Duluth, 2015). Fishes with these phenotypes were counted and recorded.
The habitats of fish greatly influence the way the fishes evolved. As presented in essay 1 by Dr. Stiassny mentions how the body of the fish are equip for the water. Water has a lot of density which causes drags when fishes swim. There shape bodies and cauda fin can help them move and communicate within their habitats. Fishes evolved from the way they ate. They use suction feeding as a way to quickly swallow their prey. The head of the fish has 30 movable parts with 50 muscles that fight the drag and helps with seductive feeding, which is demonstrated in the fish skull animation. In essay 2 doctor Dr. Stiassny mentions that fishes eyes are equipped for the water. There spherical shape has many layers. These layers have different “refractive
Channel catfish fry were more resistant to salinity than hybrid catfish and blue catfish (P < 0.001) at 6.0 ppt for swim-up fry, however, no difference was observed at the other salinities (P > 0.05). The resistance of (C×B) hybrid catfish to salinity was intermediate to that of channel catfish and that of blue catfish. NaCl had a negative effect on survival rate of yolk sac larvae beginning at 3 ppt and for swim-up fry at 6 ppt. Genotype × environment interactions occurred for growth as hybrids grew faster than channel catfish and blue catfish at 0 ppt. Raising salinity to 3 ppt greatly increased the growth rate (50-75%) of channel catfish and blue catfish, but only slightly (10%) for hybrid catfish, which were still larger than the parent species. Channel catfish were the most tolerant of the genotypes at 6 ppt, had the largest size, but their growth was
Little skate fishes are known to be one of the dominant members of the demersal fish community in the northwestern Atlantic. They live deep in the ocean, sitting in the ocean floor most of times. They use these organs called spiracles as I mentioned above, they help the little skate to function oxygen to reach internal respiratory organs and still intake oxygenated water over their gills. These spiracles are slit-like openings near their eyes. The process goes where water is taken in through the spiracles then passes over to the gills which then leaves the body through five pairs of gill passageway underneath the body. These little skate fishes live on by feeding on crabs, sea squirts, worms, squid, mollusks, small fishes or any other small

Archerfish can jump from the water to reach their prey, attaining heights more than twice their own body length. When spitting won't do the job, the fish hover below their prey and then suddenly leap from the water. Recently, scientists captured high-speed video of the leaping fish, documenting the fin and tail techniques that propel the fish upward. Analysis of the archer fish's body movements offered insights into how they could jump so high more than twice their own body length to reach their prey. Spitting at prey is the best-known predatory technique of the archerfish, but it doesn't always serve them well when they have a lot of competition from other fish. How the fish prepare for the jump is that they stop dead (not really) at the top
Angel fish. Angel fish are oval shaped so they can swim through the water very fast.''They can be from 6 to 24 inches long''.''Some also have long, pointed fins that make them almost twice as tall
The male betta crown, also known as Siamese fighting fish, is a popular choice for owners of fish. They have a wide variety of colors and shapes, and are very robust when it comes to adapting to an aquarium. The crown betta has that name by the unique design of the fin with which it has been raised. These fish create a dramatic impression with its vibrant colors and extreme extensions of the
Puffer fish; one of the few sea creatures that can puff up into a ball to protect itself from predators. The puffer fish has a sluggish swimming style that makes them a target for predators. To try to protect themselves, they use their elastic stomachs and their ability to hastily ingest large amounts of water and when necessary, air to turn them into a ball that is normally several times their size. Some species of the tetraodontidae have spines on their skin to assist them become less pleasing. Imagine a hungry, vicious, ruthless shark- stomach growling for food- strolling through the ocean. And here comes along a little fish. The shark sees this as a perfect opportunity for a quick bite. And in the shark goes, gobbling up the fish, which
First,we are going to focus on their appearance.Their appearance, they are mostly dark silver and blue and some green. They can kill you they are my second favorite fish. They have fang like teeth, they can kill you. They are very different. They look very weird long there like one
Blue belongs to the bright colored fish species commonly known as betta or also as the Siamese fighting fish. Originally from Southeast Asia, this particular species of fish is known as a labyrinth because it is able to breathe in oxygen directly from the surface. In addition it can survive out of water, for a short period of time, as long as it is moist (The Beauty of the Betta). Their lifespan ranges from one to four years. Although betta fish are seen as a house pet, they originally reside in the Mekong River (Siamese Fighting Fish). Known for their feisty temper, the betta fish's’ diet consist of all meat such as brine shrimp and insects (Siamese Fighting Fish).
A hatchetfish has many species and looks. The silver hatchetfish is silvery white-ish color with a black streak running through the center along the belly. It has an asymmetrical shape. Asymmetrical is when something does not have symmetry. The shape of the fish is a hatchet/axe shape. Having this shape makes it asymmetrical. It is harder to tell if it is a male or female fish but, usually the female is rounder than the male. There weight is unknown. The fishes mouth is on top of the head. The mouth is in a good place because it is used to eat surface foods. It has better eyesight to stalk its prey. It also has pectoral fins that help it to jump out of the water to get away from its predators. Some people say this fish can fly. Hatchetfish
