EATING DARK CHOCOLATE CAN LEAD TO MEMORY ENHANCEMENT
Are you a fan of dark chocolate? If you are, here’s a piece of good news for you. Research has shown that dark chocolate can lead to enhanced memory. Dark chocolate contains a substance known as Epicatechin (Epi). Through a research done using snails as test subjects, it has been proven that these substances are powerful bio-active substances that help to alter cognitive ability. It has been proven that Epi has led to lower rates of cognitive impairment whereby the improved cognitive performance is most significant in older people.

Predator detection resulted in enhanced memory only if the snails detected the presence of predators during training. If predators were detected during the consolidation period, no enhancement of memory was ensured.
Thermal stressors were effective when the snails are exposed to them between 3 days and 1 hour beforehand. The thermal stimulus elicits heat-shock proteins, coupled with a process known as DNA methylation, they form a necessary role in memory enhancement. This has resulted in the hypothesis that Epi treatment one hour beforehand leading to memory enhancement being debunked. Instead, it shows that memory formation involves many different mechanisms, including the elaboration of heat-shock proteins and DNA methylation.
In the case of predator detection leading to DNA methylation, memory enhancement is only activated when predator is detected during training and is thus an activity dependent process.
