Suppose we walk into the woods, and the only vegetation around is the large hardwood trees towering above us. At first, we may think this is a great place to walk because there is not foliage to maneuver. However, this forest is actually unhealthy due to a lack of ground cover and native vegetation. The cause is an overabundance of deer eating everything from the ground to as high as they can reach. The excess number of deer and their eating habits causes many plant species to be completely wiped out of an area due to the overpopulation of deer. This is a result of inefficient practices and regulations by humans. Some of this problem is controlled by sterilization and predators, but hunting should be recognized as the main solution to solving the problems caused by high deer populations.
With the loss of native vegetation, there is no doubt that something needs to be done to lower the deer population. Deer overabundance occurs when there are too many deer in a confined area. Overabundance is commonly described as roughly fifteen or more deer per square mile and is altering many forests. This problem has made headlines in

For instance, the drug Porcine Zona Pellucida (PZP) appears to be very effective. The Humane Society of the United States website presents the article, “Controlling Deer Populations Humanely” which states that PZP sterilizes deer and is a natural protein causing no harm to the animal. The drug can be administered by dart guns and is very effective in reducing the population of deer. PZP was most successful on Fripp Island, SC and Fire National Island Seashore, NY reducing the herd to a healthy population (“Controlling Deer”). It is safer to sterilize the deer rather than kill them due to the low powered guns used. However, sterilization is very expensive and high maintenance because it is a short-term
To manage this population of mule deer in Colorado a detailed Microsoft Excel spreadsheet has been used for 29 years. To ease management of this population I would not utilize trial and error based on this spreadsheet. However, it does provide ample insight into how various management strategies will play out in the landscape. Moreover, due to the dangers associated with stochasticity and constant
I will admit that does sound silly, however, after reading more about this kind of approach it became more realistic. Controlling wildlife fertility might be a safer and more humane way to solve this issue. The Humane Society has an immunocontraception vaccine called porcine zona pellucida, and it helps control the fertility of female deer (“Controlling Deer Populations Humanely”). This vaccine can be delivered by hand or darts shot from a dart gun as well. Kristof stated that private companies have spent around $8,000 for deer birth control (Kristof). However, after further improvements this vaccine can now last up to three years, which helps decrease the costs of this procedure (“Controlling Deer Populations Humanely”). The longer the vaccine lasts, the less we would have to re-vaccine the deer. This vaccine is also not harmful and painless for deer, which is another benefit of this. The Humane Society and others believe this a beneficial way to decrease the deer population and accidents. Vaccinating seems extreme or silly to people, but this is the only approach that does not involve a death for humans or
This investigative study included whether gray wolves, a natural top predator to white tailed deer, create a trophic effect by reducing the deer and how it may affect saplings and vegetation in the Great Lakes forest area. The study was not conducted for direct kills, instead it was done to see the effects of the deer population and the plant and vegetation systems surrounding them. The expected effects were that in areas where wolves are less dense in the region it causes an increase of deer having a negative impact on plants and vegetation in the surrounding area. The recolonization of wolves in the area is generating trait-meditated effects in the Great Lakes forest and are
When herbivorous species such as white-tailed deer and elks are the main predators in a habitat, they create an imbalance in the habitat, and force other species in the habitat to go extinct. Natural predation also has a stronger impact in stabilizing or reducing the population of white-tailed deer than human hunting alone. One of the main reasons for the overpopulation of the deer was the extinction of their predators. Every animal in the food web is highly important in keeping the balance in the ecosystem. Yellowstone National Park was a great example of how every species support the
It examines the how browsers can encourage positive conditions for temperate forest soils, such as providing extra nitrogen in the soils as a fertilizer. They found evidence that deer populations promote plant species biodiversity because it promotes invasive species that thrive off of degradation and habitat disturbance. Also, researchers found one cost about deer browsing was that even though it promotes plant biodiversity, it also decrease the amount of palatable, or edible, plant species. This is useful in my paper because it provides a different outlook of the effects of deer because most articles are negative towards deer browsing. The authors of this paper all work for the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service as research ecologists, all have their doctorates in ecology and/or biology. This finding sharply contrasts with the negative impact that deer have when their populations kill and over browse, harming native plant
With an estimated 19,520 deer maimed, dying gruesome, inhumane deaths at the hands of British Columbia drivers every year a solution needs to be found (“The Facts”). With the over population of deer in Victoria, a sight becoming more common, is the carcass of a deer which has been impaled by the bumper of an unfortunate motorist. These deaths are not only cruel and inhumane for the deer but also pose a danger to the motorist’s. The danger which deer pose to cyclists is one that cannot be overlooked. Cyclists do not have the added protection that motorist’s enjoy and are at higher risk of serious injury when a collision occurs. The menace rutting deer expose children and pets to is a
So to put that into perspective from Kansas, down to Mexico, and from Kansas up into Canada, and all the way to the water on the East Coast. Typically Whitetail Deer in the Midwest will eat on green sprouting plants in the summer when its hot. Such as turnips, clover, alfalfa and even beans and corn before it starts to change in color and start to harden. In the winter time, the Whitetail Deer will move more to cover to keep out of the harsh elements. They revert to acorns falling from the trees and also corn and beans before its about to be harvested. Also having food plots planted for them with greens on it for the late season will also keep the deer on your place. If you leave food on your land and the deer know about it they will be there until you run out. Whitetail deer typically get the biggest out of the four different types of deer. Many Whitetails go beyond the 300 pound mark. Antler size ranges on the Whitetail the farther east u go towards the water. This is because there is less crops for them to eat such as were Kansas, Iowa, and Illinois produce some of the most crops in the United States on yearly basis were North Carolina hardly produces any crops. Typically more food the state has for deer, the bigger the deer will get in body size and also body
Reintroduction of wolves brought about recovery of plants and animals in Yellowstone National Park. In 1990s, deer were overpopulated due to absence of its predator, wolves. Regardless of people’s efforts, the number of deer kept increasing. As a result,
In the northeast area, the deer population is especially high. Because they are now so heavily populated, they are starting to cause more and more problems. Crop damage, which is when a farmer loses a substantial amount of crops, is growing with the deer population. This is a huge problem for the farmers because they are losing a lot of money by feeding the deer. With the rising population,
To begin, hunting will dramatically lower the deer population as the bucks do not have a chance to impregnate does, thus preventing an increase in the population. Additionally, the deer population will decrease as hunters end the lives of deer before they end the lives of humans. I have personally experienced the fear and disgust of hitting a deer. My mom was driving my six siblings and I home from a family trip when the car in front of us hit a deer. Instead of stopping
The first problem is that deer are starting to become overpopulated in many states. (5) It is a growing problem because there is over 20 million now in the US compared to the 1900s there were only over 3 million. (5)The population grew by 3 million, in the early 1900s, to over 30 million, in the mid-1990s. (8) There are too many deer in certain places that plants are getting very damaged. (8) This could cause loss of materials for humans. (8) Each year, on average,
“In the early twentieth century, there were approximately 500,000 white-tailed deer inhabiting the United States.”(Swihart) “Since then, several studies have been conducted proving that there are problems with deer overpopulation. Research has displayed that there are three prominent units that the causes come from; human overpopulation, elimination of their natural predators , along with lack of hunting to control the population.”(Lane) Human overpopulation has affected the deer population due to the fact that as the human population has increased the need for homes, food and water supply, as well as other extra things such as malls, highways and much more. The need for those has resulted in humans cutting down trees and destroying the habitats of the deer which has lead to the population moving to other areas and causing disease because the population is to high none area. The eradication of their natural predators is the result of removing the deers natural predators; this would result in the deer overpopulating. The lack of hunting to control the population would lead to an increase in the population in urban
In 1912 when the “buck law” went into effect it was set to increase the number of deer as well as limit the abundance of deer to prey on other organisms. This was not as simple as thought, many were illegally killed leaving many newborns to starve during the winter. (Brown, 1956). Hunting soon began to be open during certain date ranges during the season to allow more regulation on hunting of the White tailed deer. (Brown, 1956). These deer prefer matured forests with practically no undergrowth (Brown, 1956) which brings them to the same place, around Alfred, New York. Although it may seem that there are more deer, the regulations help, but the deer don’t reproduce as many, squirrels reproduce 2-4 per litter twice a year (Frankis).
Many people have misconceptions about hunting. One such misconception is that hunting is easy and any person can go sit in the woods and wait for an animal to cross the hunter’s path. However, people who believe this are sorely mistaken. Hunting is not just sitting in the woods with a rifle; there are many other aspects that must be considered. An individual must have all preparations complete, purchase or gather the equipment needed, and know what to listen for while in the woods.
It was my favorite time of the year again, deer hunting season. Going to my cabin up in northern Minnesota and doing what I love was never a let down. The peacefulness, liveliness, and belongingness of being in the woods made deer hunting the most enjoyable part of the year.
