Students primarily rely on professors and academic advisors to recommend a class schedule to them each semester. On the student side, it is assumed that this recommended schedule is moving them toward graduation while preparing them for career success. However, given that upper level classes in the CS/IT department at Clayton State University aren’t always offered every semester, students can risk delaying graduation and not being fully career ready, by not doing enough of their own research into the classes they need. Being able to verify the researched class requirements against the advised class requirements is a crucial step in getting more students graduating from the CS and IT programs at Clayton State University.

[1] If a student, or an advisor makes a mistake in calculating the student’s credits and pre-requisites, or if the student has other issues with registration (course substitutions, department approvals, etc), the student is then forced to create more appointments with the advisor to get things on track for them. This process points to challenges in the academic advising model that leaves students disconnected from their education and can result in more dire consequences including delayed graduation. In the work of Luna, Gaye, et.al, the authors stated that “E-advising can establish a support system for rural graduate students by creating a means of accessibility and communication. Through e-advising, rural graduates students have an opportunity to self-direct and contribute to their own educational advisement needs. Universities can use e-advising to foster successful students by creating more accessibility and communication.” [2] While course work and advising at the graduate level has it’s distinctions from advising at the undergraduate level, some core concepts still ring true. Advising through technology empowers the students to take charge of their education, and ensure their goals are being met according to their schedule. Though digital assistants aren’t capable of filling the full role of a human academic advisor, giving students access to key, basic information will make all advising more effective.

Yet again, restrict the search to any college of your choice, and witness the variety of study skill resources for a student to absorb. This isn’t just the solicitation of vendors since many of the offerings are gratis. Though that is not to suggest students aren’t willing to pay to address delinquencies in their approach to a huge investment of time, effort, and money. In this genuine struggle, students pull away from losing that investment by redressing the remedial shortfall. Within the classroom, they face a common practice of tying grades, and even course enrollment, to the acknowledgement of introduction materials. This practice signals to student and teacher alike the operant limits in ability to stay on top of assignments. In other words, organization skill deficits preempt and block any further progress to learning. College policy backs these practices, enforceable on all students. This substantiates the importance and necessity of these skills to the individual, the institution, and industry at

A big concern in todays’ world for graduating college students is being able to find a job right out of school. More times than not, there are many problems that occur when a student chooses a specific career path. In the short exert “Why Focusing Too Narrowly In College Could Backfire”, written by Peter Cappelli, he discusses in his opinion, as well as many others, the right path students should be taking. The lead way students should be following to secure they get a job in a field they will enjoy. Many students have trouble picking a college to go to let alone what major they want to focus on. Students are told to pick a major and start taking the classes for it as soon as possible without realizing they might not even enjoy that field of work. There are many struggles in college with picking the correct classes and
Every year, there are thousands of college students that are pushed to attend college, in the sole hope that they will be able to make a respectable living. More than half of these students will not end up completing their 4-year degree. Many students are starting to take a hard look at why they are going to pursue a college degree, to determine if a degree is really their best option. College education is changing for the better, with technical and vocational skills giving less academically inclined students an option. Another reason why students should consider other options is the cost; university boards have been some of the most corrupt and wasteful spenders in the last decade and this will only change with less demand. Finally, the strenuous process of admissions has been continuously overlooked and underestimated by thousands of future students. A traditional 4-year education, that caters to the industry of university, is no longer required to be successful in the job market, and traditional admissions can become an anachronism.
Perhaps, the biggest concern among Miami Dade College students is the lack of consistency and uniformity in the student services the center provides, like Financial Aid, Advisement and Admission Services. Students report that this existing division is preventing them from making decisions on time and achieving their goals. Even though new students are required to meet with an advisor right after admission, they do not always find help. Only a small number of these students report having their IEP created by an advisor in the institution. Many of them have to resort to the institutions where they plan to transfer after completing their degree, or rely on the experience of their friends to map out a plan of study. As the result of miscommunication, students often have to come
O*Net Online’s database is the nation’s primary source for occupational and career information. O*Net answers questions about an occupation’s work requirements and skills needed for a specific job. Secondary level advising catches my eye, so I chose to learn more about the skills, knowledge, wages and educational level required for academic advising. Academic advising, stated by O*Net Online, “counsels’ individuals to help them understand and overcome personal, social, or behavioral problems affecting their educational and vocational situations.” (Build your future with O*Net Online. (n.d.)). Academic Advising also includes crisis intervention, keeping accurate records of students, and preparing students for success after high school.
Students go to college in search of knowledge, a new lifestyle, and the hope of a job after graduation. For many young adults, college is a rite of passage into an independent, mature new lifestyle. Not only is higher education a rite of passage, for some, it is also an opportunity to have a better life. Overall, college is a wonderful part of many people’s lives, yet the way the college education system is conducted wastes students time and money. College is basically composed of two parts: general education classes and major specific classes. General education courses are the source of wasted time and money, and should not be required of students. A few of the problems associated with general education classes are that they are
A section of recommendation one is to “increase completion rates of students earning community college credentials (certificates and associate degrees) by fifty percent by 2020.” (AACC, 2012 p. 26). Although recommendation one is certainly obtainable, completing the goal by 2020 is doubtful. As an administrator, in order to see a goal this large come to manifestation, everyone has to get on the bus, and asking the same question “who” instead of “what” – then, and only then will a goal this large will manifest ( Collins, 2001). However, utilizing particular strategies to accomplish the goal will help toward achieving the goal. In doing that, students would be served more effectively and more efficiently, because staff and faculty would be more intentional regarding the service rendered.
Children should be encouraged to think about risks and given more independence, so they are more likely to grow in confidence. If a child’s experiences is limited its likely that the child may find it difficult to assess and manage risks on their own .If we become to obsess about their health an safety, we may affect their learning development and abilities. Sometimes it’s good to offer them challenging environment for them to deal with risks under our observation also when a child sustain or witness injuries they gain direct experience of their action and choices.
In Life there are roads and there are choices. The right or left turn you make along the winding path throughout your life is and should be the one that makes you happy. Furthering your education may be your best and only way to make that right decision. At the present moment I am now currently attending Valencia Community College working towards my Associate Degree in Computer Science. My current major is Computer Science, although Computer Engineering with a focus in Software is what I will most likely pursue as my Bachelor of Arts (BA). Computer Science/Engineering is one of the most popular and fastest growing careers today. Today, computers are used in almost every aspect of our lives: in car
To tell the truth, entrance tests in community colleges don’t determine the student's’ passion for education. Placement tests put students off the path to success in their education career. Susan Headden is a senior writer and a prize winning journalist wrote that 72 percent of students who didn’t take the remedial courses and directly went to college level classes “made the wise decision.” On the other hand 27, percent of students who claim to take remedial classes went to the higher level courses in community college. Also, she included that a retired professor at Stanford University, Michael W. Kirst, speaks about students who have been denied from taking college level courses, without letting them try(35). Community colleges make students
Information for this paper was collected through interviews with the VP of Student Services, the Associate VP of Enrollment Management, and the Director of Financial Aid. These interviews addressed distance learning, social media, operating systems, digital divide, and digital native. We discussed the trends of usage and the impacts on students and community colleges. Throughout this section, I will refer to these individuals as participates one, two, and three and this order is random to those interviewed. All participates where asked to participate in interview about technology in student services. They were provided with a copy of the paper abstract along with the following items to consider in regards to technology; current trends/issues in your area; changes since you entered the profession, and challenges.
To keep up with student needs and new technology, an auction method for course registration was created in 1981. “The University of Chicago Graduate School of Business instituted a computerized course registration system in 1981. The system has been successful in allocating limited classroom and faculty resources among the students” (Graves, Schrage, and Sankaran 81), this computerized system is used at Normandale Community College. While the system does its job by filling classes to its capacity, there is a common problem that the classes fill too quickly, and many students are left with holes in their schedules. For some students this is a minor problem, but for others it could be detrimental. Certain courses are required for graduation based on a student’s major, and not being able to get the credits could delay graduation. Ultimately, this would cost the student more time and money. Although it may be unavoidable, there are a few possible solutions for a student to increase their chance of getting into these full

On April 30, 2016, I intended on walking across the stage to receive my Associate’s degree from Richard J. Daley College. However, I decided to stay home and continue studying for my final exams. Sacrificing my graduation ceremony to pass my final exams with good grades proved that I made the right decision. After two years of dedication and consistent work, I have earned my Associate’s degree in Science. With a focus on math and science, I will continue my educational journey at the undergraduate level, with the goal of progressing to the graduate level in Computer Science. After completing my master’s degree in Computer Science degree, I plan to further my studies by acquiring a master’s degree in business administration within the next six years. Moreover, my life goals are to achieve intellectual growth, advance in my profession, and start a company that specializes in cybersecurity.
