Erik Erikson, a famous American-German psychologist, once said “Life doesn't make any sense without interdependence. We need each other and the sooner we learn that, the better for us all.” However, what happens if that interdependence is constantly negatively affecting one's life? One’s surrounding has an enormous effect on both the mental and physical health of their being. Two main factors of an individual having negative effects on their life can come from experiencing discrimination and prejudice from society . According to the Oxford Dictionary, discrimination is “the unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people or things, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.On the other hand prejudice is “ the unjustified or incorrect attitude (usually negative) towards an individual based solely on the individual's participation of a social group.” But how can discrimination and prejudice directly affect one's life? It has an enormous effect on one's job, lifestyle and education which can alter an individual's life completely.

America has had discrimination against minorities for a long time and it will continue to have it until people treat minorities with respect. Discrimination is when people treat minorities bad because of their skin color, ethnicity and the place they were born. For immigrants, the problems they had to arrive to America were not a good experience only by the struggle to gain acceptance among the population. Most immigrants came to the U.S. to have a better life and give education to their children. Almost all immigrants have experienced discrimination at some point in their life and even some are still experiencing it today. Recently I cared for a female resident from Germany and although she had lived here for many years, her English was very broken. To help me overcome the language barrier I used; Picture Flash Cards, Flash Cards with German and English phrases on them, non-verbal gestures and an English/German dictionary. By using these different methods of communication I was able to; Encourage and support her to participate in social activities, share information about her well-being and her likes and dislikes with my co-workers and encourage and support her to keep her independence. There are lots of potential effects related to discrimination. It includes things like disempowerment, low self-esteem and self-identity and also marginalisation. I am now going to explain these effects and connect them with a case study.
Being a subject of multiple discrimination can cause major effects on a persons self esteem and self confidence, making them feel very low. It can affect their choices in life, such as career and living choices. Their health may also be affected by this.

Throughout time, racism has controlled the way people treat each other, and despite many Americans believing that they have resolved their racist ways, many people still face discrimination.
“Discrimination: treating a person or group differently when the reason is not relevant”(Kaye and Thomson). A double standard is created when a rule or regulation does not fairly apply to all groups. An example of this is racism’s double standard that has been created while trying to amend to unfairness created by racism. However, what if there was a form of discrimination that is buried deep within an institution that may not appear to be discriminatory to the naked eye? This particular form is known as institutional discrimination. We are all members of the human race and discrimination is an injustice; we must do something about it. For example, we can help who ever needs our help no matter what they look like. Starving people in our own country need food and medicine to live and we can give that to them even though they might look different than us, and even though they might have different skin than us. Color or race shouldn't stop us from saving someone's lives and caring for the sick and poor. Another example of discrimination in our world, is how some people don't get the same things as someone else because they look different. Even though someone looks different, it doesn't mean that they are different in a bad way and they shouldn't be put in the back of the kitchen
A lot of people understand and have gone through stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. Social Psychologists make a distinction between these by concentrating on either they include emotions, understanding, or attitudes. Racism is the influence, or reaction, visible feature of this triad. Racism includes a contradicting approach into individuals situated on their association in a specific organization.
