John lives with his wife, patricia and a daughter named sia in a big, fancy mansion. John and patricia own the best coffee shop in the town, dystopia. Sia loves the pumpkin spice latte with strawberry whip cream. The coffee shop became popular when sia was born five years ago, 2116. The chocklit family do grocery shopping in macadame loft for their coffee shop. Everyone in 2121 in Dystopia pay with their face. There are security scanning machines with facial recognition system. Everyone pays with their face in the coffee shop. One day, a young man ordered a chocolate, whipped cappucino and almost walked out the door.

One night, a very dark night, trouble was lurking in the shadows. You could just smell it in the air everywhere you go. It was like choking on a dark cloud filled with danger. The city that once had homed thousands and been the most economically successful country ever, was now a contaminated wasteland. The land looked dry, destroyed and lonely. The morning breeze felt like crying sorrows, and the grey deceitful sky awed down at us. In the deepest corner of despair lies dystopia where hope dies. As someone looks through the eyes of the devil, they see his utopia. Only visible by the dim light of the moon was the great wall. Beyond the wall? No one knew. Stretching away from the wall was a humongous bridge that towered the wall. Standing tall on the bridge was a tower, which had two circles that almost looked like eyes. Those mysterious, creepy and dangerous looking eyes stared down at the city giving away a haunting look.

I look to the right of my bed and it’s there; crouching beside me. Its face is pure white and doesn’t resemble skin at all, but a shining porcelain. The monster doesn’t have a mouth - there is just skin running down from the bottom of its nose to its chin. Shielding it’s beady eyes are a pair of raven-black goggles strapped to its bald head. It wears what resembles a completely circular helmet the colour of a neon orange and its hands are covered in tactical gloves, dark as a jet-black night. It wears an amber jumpsuit and stare into my soul. A dystopian society is an illusion of a perfect society. Think of a world where having fun isn’t allowed. Nothing that has been created is fun no sports, no computer games, no music and everything in life has a purpose. You are forced to work for the rest of your life a job that the government chose. The government chooses who you are going to marry, where you are going to live and how much you are going to make. However, one person is assigned a job that he enjoyed and is fun. It is so fun that he become the best in the field. He then goes on to become the boss of everybody in that field and starts to boss around the people at the firm. If somebody says something that he does not agree with they get fired. The keys aspect of a dystopian society can either be a control of information, a singularity in power or ruling in fear and the purpose of these stories to the reader is what would happen if we let it run its course?

A dystopian novel is a story relating to or denoting an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one. 1984 by George Orwell, is indeed a dystopian novel as it describes a nightmare vision of future society which is opposite to a perfect world. In what country does the most democratic society exist? In today’s world, the United States is the well-known example. The democracy in the United States makes it possible to secure one’s economic freedom without government interruption, alternatively termed capitalism. In modern world, the contemporary take on capitalism is consumerism. Ironically, given that capitalism is part of democracy, it is not equally distributed. The presence of social class separates one consumer from another and restricts one’s ability to purchase his or her want. Even with this constraint, consumerism is widely practiced right in democracy. Although the consequences of practicing consumerism are not apparent to everyone, Aldous Huxley discloses the detrimental impact of consumerism in society. He depicts two fictional societies in his works: the dystopian society of the World State in the Brave New World and the utopian society of Pala in Island. In both works, Huxley warns the readers about the influence of consumerism by illustrating its usage in manipulating individual thoughts in the World State and its function in bringing materialism to Pala.

A utopia is what everyone is aiming for, but is that really what they are getting? With the hopes of a perfect society, we the people are rushing for a drastic change in the way things work without giving too much care in which direction things are changing, and that can and will cause definite issues. In the hopes to rush into a perfect world, too many people are treating government like a roulette wheel and hoping for the best, even though all odds are against them. In doing so, they are setting themselves up for a more controlled tomorrow.

Every child in the room was quiet in fear of disobeying and in pure content that today was another school day. Everyone else’s desks were identical: a scribbled-out heart an inch away from the corner, a deep, inch long scratch on the side. The silence was contagious until a woman entered the room, with hare-like features she clutched a clipboard, needle-like claws holding the soft wood in place.

In order to achieve false happiness; they used technology and drugs to make the society a perfect “heaven”. In the Utopian society, people are assumed to be in a world of sunshine and bluebonnets, and not care what lies beyond their Ford society. Technology is the mastermind in producing the perfect society, and the people are their lab rats. Drugs are used to hallucinate things, make us happy, and live a dreamlike life. Is having false happiness the best thing, do we need to forget what makes us humans, or do need to be robots and follow the Ford’s commands?

In literature, dystopias have always been given a bad reputation for being detrimental to a society. However, this belief does not represent the positives of a society being dystopian. It is known that any dystopia, a detrimental society, was created originally as a utopia, a pleasant society. This means that any dystopia was started with the hope of helping people, but since no government can make everyone happy, the society eventually breaks down into a dystopia.The fact that many dystopias are rooted in good intentions means that, while contrary to popular belief, there must be some good things to a dystopian society. Despite most people thinking that dystopias are completely rotten, there are in fact some benefits to a society being dystopian.

New York Times bestselling author, Ally Condie, makes the observation that dystopian fiction acts as a guide for allowing people to experience a dystopian world before it becomes reality as shown by her quote “The beauty of dystopia is that it lets us vicariously experience future worlds - but we still have the power to change our own.” Similarly, George Orwell’s novel 1984 uses dystopian characteristics as a means of warning readers of the potential threat of inhabiting a dystopian society. Through the influence of past historical events combined with the extreme depiction of dystopian characteristics in the novel, Orwell is able to construct a powerful warning to his readers. As a result of instilling fear into the readers, Orwell effectively warns them of the potential threat of inhabiting their own dystopian society.

There will always will be a power or a government with a society. Whether it be as small as a group or as large as a country. According to multiple sources, government has been around since the first city-state was created. Just by this source alone we demonstrate how society has always needed an order and power: Government. Dystopian novels are some of my favorite types of books. Books such The Hunger Games, Divergent, and The Fifth Wave, as well as The Maze Runner, are all dystopian themed stories. The Fearless, written by Emma Pass, is one of those stories. I love dystopian books, there is something incredibly fascinating about a world where we are no longer in control. Usually, it is the government that is corrupt and the cause of the problems within the novel, like the Capitol in The Hunger Games and Jeanine in Divergent. Here, though, the government is not actually the bad guy.
