“I want people to notice my writing abilities are real and that I'm not just stuck in one situation” (R. Kelly). At montgomery community college, english 101 is the first english class that consists of reading and writing. Students are able to show their understanding of an author's message and have the ability to write an essay with great potential.

When taking english 101, reading is a huge factor which leads to a better understanding of a passage.“the students learn to read critically, a skill that involves distinguishing central ideas from supporting material and identifying an author's purpose, assumptions, attitudes, and biases”(mc3). Students learn how to compare and contrast, argue key points and lastly describe topics. Another key component towards writing is grammar. Grammar is what makes someone's paper clean and easy to read. With poor grammar, one will be bewildered to what the writer is trying to convey. No one wants to have a hard time reading a horrible paper. Regards to writing, “the student in ENG 101 learns a writing process that involves generating ideas, drafting, composing, revising, and editing:” Students slowly climb up the ladder to become a better writer. Critical thinking is implemented in writing a good paper. Lastly writing helps with constructing a resume. Students are taught on how to make a resume. A resume is well organized and gets to the point. It is mostly used to get into jobs that require that persons experience history. With that being said, writing makes up the other half of critical thinking. Both rely on each other.

In conclusion, reading and writing are the key components in english 101. By the end of the semester, students are able to implement reading and writing in the next english class. Reading a passage gives the student a better understanding on what the author conveys in the context. Then critically think about the questions one will be asked regarding the reading. One can use that critical thinking and write a well constructed essay. That student has shown their abilities in comprehensive reading and
