Greed is the undertone upon which Douglass states that slavery “corrupted souls” and “turned good people into bad people.” The institution of slavery was based on the ultimate control and power over a human to whom he is stripped of all of his identity and becomes sub-human. Consequently, the institution forces slave holders had to buy into this concept in order to justify any and all cruelty toward slaves. Douglas states “Slave holders resort to all kinds of cruelty” and later describes various ways of torture and punishment “all are in requisition to keep the slave in his condition as a slave in the United States” (Douglass 272). Slave holders showed no mercy when reprimanding slaves. The brutality and cruelty of these punishments were more of a statement of power and control and often times the punishment was worse than the offense.

What enlightens me about Douglass was his drive for education. He taught me while reading this Primary Source that despite what kind of obstacle that may try to come up against your success, if you believe in what you are fighting for, there is nothing that can stand in your way of accomplishing your goals. Over time I have often struggled with understanding college math. So many times I have wanted to give up but despite this feeling of agony, I chose to keep pushing myself to stay in the class because I am inspired by the life of Frederick Douglass that my goals will soon come to pass.

Frederick Douglass was born as a slave, in the Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. Slavery in Maryland was a very cruel and heartless institution started in the year 1642 when some of the first settlers of the New World brought Africans to do their work. These first settlers started what would eventually be a system that lasted until 1865, when Abraham Lincoln had the gall to free those who have never had a voice. Frederick Douglass, he was just another cog in the machine, just another wheel in the system that use him and exploited him for the benefit of wealthy plantation owners. The exact year Frederick Douglass was born is unknown currently, however, he chose to celebrate his birthday on February 14th.

The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, An American Slave was written by Douglass himself, giving a detailed description of the slaveholders cruelty. Douglass was born in Tuckahoe, Maryland, and he makes known that he does not know his specific birthdate, “... no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it.” (47), but it was approximately around 1818. Once being enslaved, and then escaping in 1838 he became known as an eloquent speaker for abolitionists, being able to deliver passionate speeches about the role of a slaveholder and their relationship to their slaves, especially since he was one of them. Douglass even discovered the true meaning of the songs sung by enslaved people, “ I did not, when a slave, understand the deep meaning of those rude and apparently incoherent songs, I was myself within the circle; so that I neither saw nor heard as those without might see and hear.” (27). The book is not an easy read for those who believe in equal rights, as Douglass put into painful words the description of brutal whippings, signs of no mercy, and people being taken advantage of because if they had shown mercy they believed they would have lost their dignity.

Frederick Douglass the most successful abolitionist who changed America’s views of slavery through his writings and actions. Frederick Douglass had many achievements throughout his life. His Life as a slave had a great impact on his writings. His great oratory skills left the largest impact on Civil War time period literature. All in all he was the best black speaker and writer ever.

Fredrick Douglass began life in a difficult position. Born into slavery, he did not have the good fortune of having a parent to attend to him. He witnessed unspeakable cruelty daily, which undoubtedly caused him a great deal of emotional distress. Yet, he never gave up on himself. Throughout his life, he continually sought to better himself through any means available to him. Against all odds, Douglass made tremendous strides in his efforts to better himself, and he eventually succeeded in achieving his ultimate goal of escaping from the horrors of slavery.

Frederick Douglass wasn’t always known as Frederick Douglass, his original name was Frederick Bailey. He grew up a slave and was taken away as a infant. Civil rights started to occur while he was doing slave work for his slave breaker Covey who beat him until he would break. He knew he needed to escape, and soon he would escape from slavery. Years passed with Covey beating him, until Frederick fought back, and soon he gave up. He knew Covey being weak would give him the chance to escape, and soon he escaped and became the civil rights leader of 1840s to 1868.

In Frederick Douglass’ Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, Mr. Douglass gives many examples of cruelty towards slaves as he shows many reasons that could have been used to abolish slavery. Throughout the well-written narrative, Douglass uses examples from the severe whippings that took place constantly to a form of brainwashing by the slaveholders over the slaves describing the terrible conditions that the slaves were faced with in the south in the first half of the 1800’s. The purpose of this narrative was most likely to give others not affiliated with slaves an explicit view of what actually happened to the slaves physically, mentally, and emotionally to show the explicit importance of knowledge to the liberation

Frederick Douglass is perhaps the most well-known abolitionist from American history. He is responsible for creating a lot of support for the abolitionist movement in the years before the Civil War. He, along with many others, was able to gain support for and attention to the abolitionist movement. People like him are the reason that slavery ended in the United States.
