The play Hamlet is considered a tragedy, in which William Shakespeare is known for writing. Throughout Hamlet numerous evens occur that leads to the determining factor of Hamlet being a tragedy. However, the main event to occur would be the death of King Hamlet, Hamlet’s father. It is indicated periodically that Hamlet is depressed, not only because of his father’s death, but also the realization that his Uncle, Claudius murdered his father, and the fact that his mother, Gertrude, married Claudius so soon after his father’s death. One of the most significant aspects to Hamlet would be the introduction of a Ghost in (I.i.50), which appears to be the Ghost of the deceased King Hamlet. The Ghost demands Hamlet to seek vengeance for his death and reveals that Claudius was the one who poisoned him. “-revenge his foul and most unnatural murder” (I.i.30). In (III.iii.76-100), Hamlet goes to kill Claudius, however Claudius is in the middle of a prayer, asking for forgiveness for his sins, thus leading Hamlet to propone his task of revenge on behalf of his father’s death. Hamlet does not want to send Claudius to Heaven due to the fact that Claudius murdered his father; he cannot possibly that it would be fair to send a villain to Heaven after the sin of murder has been committed. “A villain kills my father: and because of that, I – his only son – send this selfsame villain to heaven. Why, this is a helping hand, not revenge!” This quote by Hamlet indicates that the sin Claudius committed, was too extreme for Hamlet to take the risk of sending him to heaven as he kills him.
